Part of the range loss comes with added weight of the front motor gear. Overcoming weight drag is as important as overcoming aerodynamic drag. The way to do highway cruising is to disable draw by the larger rear motor. It might be something software could do.

Sounds like what I said here is going to happen with idling of one motor via software. I have to guess they will idle the front motor rather than the rear, but I wonder if they could make it user selectable. If you know you will drive two hundred miles on cruise control, using the front motor may be more efficient. I guess depends if there are different gear ratios and other factors.

Maybe software could allow you to disable a motor completely, making the car FWD, RWD or DWD. Would be a fun option for Model 3.

Why not let the car dynamically change which one is idle? Use the motor that is in the most efficient range.

No, no.. sorry.. I'll go back and edit the original post. Not my brown car. It was sitting at the Rockville SC.

I picked up my grey P85D yesterday in Rockville (late afternoon). Four days ahead of schedule. The team and my DS did a great job with everything... loved it. I also met the owner of the brown car pictured in Andrew's photos. Great guy, I don't think he is on these forums. It is his second (first was P85+ and has an X on order). Sharp looking car with 21" wheels, tan interior and a black headliner. Didn't pick the red calipers as he "wanted to keep it low key"... :)

Funny thing, there was another brown car there for pickup also for another customer.

My quick review:

I really, really like my new Tesla (first). (It's been raining here in DC so no dry pavement.) I took a friend out today and punched it in Insane mode... He laughed out loud and said it felt like a carnival ride. I did not get the NG seats I ordered but do find the standard ones very nice. I'm going to the Tysons store in the next 30 days to check out the NG seats... may keep the current ones but am inclined to have the new ones installed once they are available.

As a matter of reference, my old car was a 2013 MB S550 on lease that finished in October. Really nice car also. But I'm so happy I made the leap (and a little leap in faith) for the P85D. It's just fun to drive a more sporty car, love the tech and it just looks great. And I have that "no gas" thing going for me... which is nice.

I'm a real music lover and the stereo in the S550 was stunning. The Tesla's upgraded stereo is very good. Not stunning but very good... Boy I wish they had a shuffle mode and would display album art in folder playback mode. With all that screen real estate it would be really nice. I've worked up a simple compromise that I'll post separately on an easy way to shuffle music on a flash drive but it's still more work than it needs to be. If Reus is available in the DC area again I'd probably upgrade... But I did find a thread that suggested some tunings which really made a positive difference in the sound. Basically: "1) Turn off Dolby. 2) Fade to the rear to -11. 3) Turn Bass up to +2. 4)Turn Midrange down to -3. 5) Leave Treble at +0. 6. Enjoy." Made a big difference in the sound stage.

I can't wait to get the rest of the autopilot features. I test drove the new MB S and it's ACC and lane departure systems were amazing. Flawless... (at least in my limited test drive). It will greatly enhance the car on long trips or heavy commute traffic. So glad the Tesla is software upgradeable.

My last purchase will most likely be the center console. I like the openness of the non-console design (and mine came with a yacht floor) but could use a little better cupholder and storage. We'll see...

Here's hoping that everyone's Tesla gets there delivery when promised and that your experience was as terrific as mine!

Executive Summary

Summary
It's us who have to adapt. So please check the attitude at the door, come with an open mind and be prepared to go on a ride - literally and figuratively.

So your summary is that the customer needs to adapt to dropping 130k on a product they have no confidence actually works. Sounds like a great business plan.

If its us that have to change instead of Tesla, I don't see how they keep this market share in the long run. I understand people are passionate about what Tesla stands for, but I honestly don't see how this roll out is even remotely defensible. Somehow blaming the customer... Almost laughable.

Apologies for derailing this thread. Do we have another thread for "delivered p85d experiences"?

I noticed some interesting regen behavior earlier today on a downhill stretch. It was just enough for maybe 10kW regen while maintaining cruise. I saw it pop up to 0 then 10 then 0 then 10 again a few times with no changes in terrain... didnt think much of it until now.

I haven't owned a Tesla before, so I'm not sure what you're getting at. Why is this interesting or different? Is this an improvement over the way regen was handled while on cruise control in the past?

Thanks!

Thanks for maintaining the spreadsheet it has been very very useful. Would you guys be ok adding a column to track the "free" yacht floor, I.e, for those that didn't order it but received it?
its everyone - no longer an option in your build.

Woot! Production complete as of an hour ago. I may have a nice present by the Festivus pole this year.

that makes 2 of us in Livermore! I just picked mine up today...great car!

Took delivery of my P85D tonight at the Culver City, CA Service Center. Lots of LA traffic leaving the center. Went home, headed downtown with my wife later for dinner. Put only 32 miles on it so far. Have not had a chance to launch from a dead stop in Insane mode.

I'm getting T-Sportline 19" wheels swapped in tomorrow morning. I'll post some more pics after that + tint. Delivered with Nappa seats front and rear. I'll wait for my Recaro's like everyone else.

I'm coming off 16 months / 19,000 miles of owning an S85 w/19" wheels.

Initial thoughts:

Aesthetic / Visual / Minor

1. Frunk is obviously smaller but still very useful.
2. Frunk easier to close.
3. Drivers side door seems to need a little more force than my S85.
4. Improved charging port is nice, but takes a little getting used to. HPWC didn't open it. Need to try that again.
5. Black headliner looks and feels amazing.
6. Yacht floor area now grippy carbon fiber? My S85 was carpet. OK. No worries.
7. Volume increments on audio system seem to be more spaced out (i.e. more travel to go between each displayed integer increment).

Driving

8. Obviously a bit surprised by the decreased range / increased energy usage. I wasn't driving especially hard and was well over (420 Wh/mi) energy usage compared to my S85 (345 Wh/mi). Coincidentally, I saw Elon's Tweets on my way to pick it up. I'm sure they're working on it and it will be resolved soon. Not worried at all.
9. The handling is amazing. Way less body roll than S85. It feels really planted.
10. Power - well I haven't pushed it yet. But the little I did was very impressive.
11. With the audio loud, I don't think I really felt / heard the lane departure indicators. Seems too slight. I only really felt it at low speed when it's quiet. I need more time with it.
12. Speed limit excess indicator very useful. I turned off the chime and just have the visual indicator enabled.

That's it for now. Can't wait to drive more!

Received my P85D on 12/23/14 2 PM. Did not come with next gen seats :(. But I made this Tesla P85D vs Lamborghini Aventador video regardless:
Spoiler: Tesla is faster than the Lamborghini at the jump.

Congrats to all who've taken delivery so far, and thanks for this vid. Looks like this hasn't made it to your mom yet then? ;-)

I'm expecting to take deliver of mine tomorrow (Christmas Eve) - Merry Christmas to me! :-D

Nor have I, but I believe that the usual behavior is that regen only happens when slowing down, not when maintaining speed even downhill.

No, that's not true: you often see the power meter go into the green (meaning regen is putting energy back into the battery) while holding speed on even gentle downhills.

You're probably right that this is somewhat OT but, still, all it would have taken to head off this tempest-in-a-teapot would be for Tesla to have a) announced that they had managed to improve the efficiency of the drivetrain such that the benefits of AWD were available without any range reduction, and b) mentioned the coming software upgrade before the first owners got their hands on their new P85Ds. For TM to think that TMC wouldn't be all over a shortfall in promised specs the moment cars were delivered is touchingly naive (insert your own adverb for 'touchingly', as the mood strikes).

I'm with Rice on this one. It's, once again, pretty poor communication by Tesla that causes so much (unnecessary) hostility and worries.

Elon obviously knew of the inefficiency problem. The Delivery Specialists obviously didn't. How hard would it have been to inform them so they could say to people taking delivery now:
"You're one of the very first P85D owners. We're still tweaking the Normal mode which means that for now you'll experience unnecessarily high energy consumption on long drives. We'll fix this soon with an OTA update."

I mean would that had made anyone not take delivery??? Also, do they really not think buyers of this car are not smart enough to put one and one together??? (Normal mode missing from menu + unusually high Wh/mile numbers). I mean a lot of buyers now are going straight from a RWS Model S.

Tesla rehiring Reyes has NOT helped their communications strategy, which is by far their weakest quality.

On an unrelated note: Merry Christmas all TMCers!

Hi all. Just a quick note from your temporary interim acting assistant spreadsheet maintenance type guy. Just saying "hello" and inviting you to PM me if you spot something goofy in the spreadsheet while Andrew is enjoying a well-deserved breather. I'm an "infrastructure" type person, not a "content" type person so I will be leaving decisions about new columns and features for Andrew when he returns. But please be my eyes and ears for things that are busted or intruders and I'll jump on those issues. Again, PM is probably best 'cause that way I'll get an email alert. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

I *really* like that user-selectable option for which motor to use. Here in the snowy north it would be great to switch to FWD when driving through really bad weather. The puzzler would be whether it's possible to rewrite all the "handling" code for three different modes like that. T'would rock if they did.

user-selectable.... I'm a software guy and know that it would be a pretty easy code function to allow such a decision in the software. But you then need to create GUI buttons, error checking, what to do if the "on" motor cuts-out (switch to other motor) and so on.

There is time now before Model 3 comes out to have a plan for a simple user-selectable switch for the DWD model to let a user go from FWD to RWD to DWD - even on the fly while driving. In fact it may even be a cool enough switch to prompt users to buy DWD versions over FWD only or RWD only (upping revenue to Tesla).

Why would you prefer FWD over AWD in bad weather?
