@MarcG, in your pictures it looks like the carpet on the back of the seats is really loose. True?

Yeah I noticed that when I was there and thought it was weird. Hopefully the ones we get delivered in March/April don't have this issue.

Anyone getting even a hint from their DS as to when the seats are going to be installed? Mine never replied to my email - not even to say "I don't know".

Contact your local (or closest) service center. The delivery specialists are out of the loop on this one. Still, your DS should have at least responded to you to tell you this...

I too am getting very frustrated with this whole seat situation. I was at the mothership in Fremont charging up yesterday and I was able to count 22 P85Ds in the parking lot and super charger stations. All but mine had next generation seats in them. My buddy with me was giving me a hard time. Why is this taking so long? Every car coming off the line has them now so why is this so difficult to do?

I have spoken multiple times with both my DS and Service Advisor and they both seem to have no answers either.

Yep. Tesla continues to pump out new cars with the new seats while we hear nothing.

I have to say that my patience with Tesla as the "start up tech/car company" and their associated growing pains is starting to wear thin. Don't get me wrong, the Model S is a great machine and these issues don't diminish that fact but after dropping the cash on two flagship Model Ss over the last 18 months only to experience this complete lack of communication with an issue (again) is tarnishing the whole ownership experience.

I'm sure there are those reading this that are thinking "...oh you poor thing, go drive your Model S and shut up..." and that's fine for you to think that but it doesn't change the facts nor the way I feel about them. For the 18 months I owned my initial P85+ I couldn't imagine owning another vehicle. Based on how the whole P85D buying experience has gone to date the bloom is sorta off the rose now.

My guess is that they are working out the "process" for how to get these seats retrofitted - training Rangers and determining a roll-out plan. They are also likely still fulfilling the original orders now that Europe is starting to ship.

When we first heard that the seats were temporary I'm pretty sure we all felt it could take several months for the next-gen to be delivered/installed but you're right - now that I see all these new cars being pumped out with next-gen seats it really makes me wonder why they can't delay THEM for a couple of weeks (or months as was my case) so us early adopters can get our proper seats installed... . Wishful thinking.

This may be delayed by the ongoing issues with the west coast US ports. No idea where the seats are made but if the seats or components of the seats have to go through a west coast port they're probably being delayed. They may be getting them just fast enough to keep up with production and without additional supply to start replacing seats. They can't really delay new P85Ds without pushing their average sale price down and making investors unhappy.

I called the local service center in MN. I was told they received an internal email stating the Next Generation seats will be delivered beginning in April. Apparently Tesla Headquarters will send individual notifications by email.

Well, for what it's worth, I got my rear NextGen seats installed today. I really like it. Much more lateral support and looks more premium than the standard seats. On long trips I think I could sleep in the seat without sliding around. With that said, I can see how passengers who are, uh, larger, might have trouble with the bolsters. They're pretty soft though. For those with carseats, my Britax Marathon fits in the outboard LATCH position. It's tight, but it fits.

What was the process like? How long did it take? Did you stay and watch? If so, do you have any thoughts on what some people had been saying early on, about this process being one that could easily ding or scratch the car when done at a service center instead of in Fremont when the car is being built? (I have no first-hand knowledge of this--I'm just repeating what some people suggested as a possibility, and wondering what your thoughts on that might be now that you may have seen the process.)

Also, on another note, you mention that the bolsters are pretty soft. Do you have any idea if you have the "new" Next Gen seats that jpet wrote about that were supposed to have softer material in the bolsters, and be able to fold flatter because of it? I guess the only way you would know would be if someone from Tesla told you, or if you were able to compare them to the original Next Gen seats.

Lots of questions! That's what you get for being the first!

Yes, what Andy said. :)

I originally voted that I would keep my back seats and only get the Next Gen fronts but have since changed my mind and now want both changed out for the Next Gen Seats.

Congrats on being the first (here anyway) to get the retrofit.

Well, in the world of Tesla, first isn't always such a good thing. ;)

Tesla valet picked up my car in the morning and dropped off the car in the evening so not sure how long it took them or whether they had any difficulty.

As for the softness of the bolsters, it's hard to describe. It's not pillow soft, but it's easily deformable. Two or three fingers and you can push it in. Sitting directly on top the bolster, you feel it there, but to me it seems to be more of the extra leather than the actual sponge pushing back. Here is a before and after pic of the bottom bolster with a filled 3 gallon water jug.

Thanks!

I'm guessing you don't see any visible indications that the back seats were switched, right? I mean if someone didn't know your car had had different back seats this morning, looking at your car now, and comparing it to a new P85D built with Next Gens in the first place, do you think that person would see anything different between the cars? Any signs whatsoever that a switch was made?

Thanks!

It looks very clean. No dust, alignment problems, scratches, etc. They washed and vacuumed the car as usual. Looks like new.

Great! I'm sure that's what all of us waiting for our Next Gen seats want to hear.

If you ever happen to be around an earlier built P85D with earlier Next Gen seats, either at a service center, or some other way, if you happen to think of it, please see if you can compare the bolster on the early Next Gen to yours, and see if you notice a difference. It would be interesting to know if you got (and hopefully the rest of us are getting) the new Next Gens or not.

Will do. I know at least one other P85D in the area, will check it out at the next local EV meetup.
