Transferring a Model 3 reservation = no problem?

My VIN is still not on my account. Picked it up on March 23rd. I have a trip planned in one week where supercharging would be really nice and mentioned it in my response to Tesla when they said it would take a while. No response and that was a week ago.

I put my credit card on my bro-in-law's account to make the order payment and left it there to cover supercharging until I can transfer. He has an S so his supercharging is free anyway so the only fees on my card will be the ones I incur myself.

Hello all,
Came to know recently that current Tesla owners can add another person (does not have to be a relative) to a model 3 reservations and help him/her get the m3 delivered in less than 2 months. This happened to one of my friends at work. The current Tesla Owner (also a co-worker) did the reservation for the other co-worker - the co-worker got his vehicle delivered in less than 2 months.
I did my reservation first thing on 3/31/2016 and haven't even received my VIN yet my-coworker came to know about the m3 two months ago and just got it delivered in 2 months.
What do you think - is this good practice?
I'm kind of upset - this can be a never ending cycle - the 2nd co-worker now can pass on to someone else ... on and on..

Any thoughts??

It's not all Tesla owners, just Model S and Model X owners, so the 2nd co-worker won't get ahead in line with another reservation just because they now own an M3. It's also not clear that MS and MX owners still get priority reservations. I've heard conflicting stories on that.

From what I've seen almost all transfers are between MS/MX owners that reserved early on and a friend or family member. Only a handful are being sold I don't think I've seen a single case where someone reserved, transferred, then reserved and tranfered a second time.

Thanks goto10, what you stated makes sense. I hope Tesla is not leaving loopholes in their system so some section of the people abuse the system. The co-worker with MS ordered a M3 for himself - he got it around Jan - Feb 2018. Then he ordered the 2nd M3 for his friend and the Friend picked it up early April 2018. Now he is saying that he can reserve one for me as well.
Not sure if Tesla has a solid reservation management system - looks buggy to me. I have seen the same for another female co-workers who reserved their M3 after talking to me and now they have their M3 way ahead of me. It bothers me now a bit.
Hope Tesla is not operating like a Mom-Pop shop with a not so reliable software system to manage their inventory and delivery processes - hope they know what they are doing.....

Hi all, there's some great information in this thread. I have a reservation and so does a co-worker. The co-worker no longer wants the M3 and offered me her reservation today and it's ready for order. My reservation is showing July - September 2018. Is the strategy discussed here still working? If so I'll proceed with placing my order tomorrow with her reservation and deal with the transfer as it comes. As long as the car is registered in my name with the CA DMV I'm not too worried how long Tesla takes as long as they transfer the car eventually.

I just picked up my M3 today which was secured under my brother-in-law's reservation with no issues at all in the process. I was able to get the purchase order written up with my name, financing secured, and the car registered to me. Everything went really smoothly and they are clearly used to dealing with purchasers who are not the original reservation holder. Based on our experience today the original reservation holder doesn't even need to be present for the pick-up. We still need to transfer the car from his account to mine, but we were assured by the Tesla folks during delivery that there would be no problem with that.

The only thing that requires a bit of coordination is the communication around financing and delivery. They are going to use the contact information on the account by default so I needed by brother-in-law to forward a few emails to me for documents I needed to sign. The delivery specialist will also initially contact the reservation holder but after her initial phone call where he explained I'd be purchasing the car she made all follow-up calls to me directly.

Here we are! I couldn't be happier. I worried a lot about all the little problems people have reported but everything is nearly perfect. It's the most fun car I've ever driven; and I've owned some fun cars before (1995 300ZX Twin Turbo, 2008 Subaru STi).

Just a real-time update on this topic...
I followed the advice elsewhere on this forum to shoot an email to [email protected] with the transfer need. No action (three weeks). Called yesterday and gave up after holding for 10 minutes. Persisted today, and after holding for 43 minutes, the phone rep sent me an email with the specific requirements for the transfer, and I replied with the information required. She said it normally then takes five days, but they are backed up. Note that the email I got after speaking with the lady came from Salesforce, not from servicehelpna, so presumably my reply to that email updates a Salesforce ticket somewhere in TeslaLand. Time will tell. Anyway, here is the required info, and yes Tesla already has much of this info from the purchase transaction so it's a bit frustrating to have to provide it again, but at this point I'm not looking to quibble with an inefficient process. As you'll see, the second item has a built-in lag, since it takes time for the state to mail you your title/registration after you've taken delivery (Day 15 and counting for me)...I tried sending the temporary registration received at delivery, will see if that flies.
1. Color copy or photo of your current driver’s license or state/province ID.
2. Copy or picture of your title or registration (Bill of sale does not qualify as a valid document. (If registering under a business, please include your business card with your name and name of the business)
3. Email address you would like linked to your account (your MyTesla email if you have already created an account)
4. Home or mailing address
5. Phone number

I’ve definitely noticed that there doesn’t seem to be a consistent protocol in transferring ownership and timeframes. In my case, I just submitted an email to servicehelpna with the VIN, original account email, new account email and delivery date. I received an email this morning giving me mobile app access and an estimated 8 business days to complete the transfer (confirmation email will follow).

It might have helped that I placed myself as the alternative contact on the other account so they didn’t need to reconfirm anything. I CC’ed the original email account as well.

You were told 8 days? I was told 5 days almost 2 months ago...

I got my reservation to configure today that’s in my name and has my fiancé listed as alternate contact on the reservation. How can I have her take over the configuration and loan in her name only? We live in the same house but I need her to make the down payment and have the loan her name only. I’m in the process of purchasing a house and don’t want a new car loan under. my name. Thanks!

Just provide her info only for all if the requested info after you configure. It doesn't use the info from your account.

Hoping someone can help with some confusion. My friends M3 is ready to configure. He offered it to me. I know we cant transfer the reservation but from this thread we could use his account to submit the configuration. We got to the final page where you actually submit the order but there was no where to enter my information, DL number, etc. Can someone whose done the process let me know when/where we would enter my information for an order in his Tesla account (which we could transfer to my account later as I seem to understand also from this thread). All of the registration/finance/insurance info is collected after you submit the $2,500 payment to place the order.
