Very disappointing first week with Model X

Hope all is well. We have been awaiting the arrival of our Model X for about the last 3 months since we ordered it. We purchased this car for my father who has been an avid Lexus fan for the last two decades given the quality and reliability of their cars. I am starting to regret not purchasing him another Lexus. The craftsmanship and quality control of our Model X, particularly given the price, is actually appalling. We had the following issues and basically two days into ownership we brought the car back. We went online and even manually "reset" the car to no avail.

1. Steering wheel off axis by about 10*.
2. Horn essentially inoperable (unless you hit very specific parts of the horn with all of your might). This almost led to an accident as someone veered into our lane on the way to service.
3. Missing and pulled stitches in the center arm rest.
4. Internet NOT working. Oddly the internet browser was NOT working at all unless we reset the car (holding top buttons on the steering) and only then it would work transiently for a while.
5. Iphone app intermittently showing that it could not connect to the car and that we have no Tesla products registered
6. Difficulty with the automatic open and close for garage that worked about 5/10 times.
7. Rain sensing wipers don't actually sense rain and need to be manually turned on for the system to realize there is rain ie not functioning normally.
8. This was VERY bothersome. The falcon door closes and rests on our second row seat in the area of the shoulder rest so now the leather is creased and has a very nice carbon fiber imprint on it--ONLY on the passenger side so it appears to be missaligned. My concern is that the door is going to start ripping apart the leather.
9. This vanity one is just annoying, but we can't do the Christmas easter egg feature without it failing about 10 seconds in.

I brought the above to our local Tesla service center and they quickly helped fix some of the issues but returned the car with:

1. Horn needs new airbag spring (works better, but NOT like the Model S I had as a loaner)
2. Internet app still NOT working--was told it was a known problem and it may take a few weeks to fix because needs some sort of firmware.
3. Now our bluetooth has stopped operating completely. The only way it works if car is restarted and re-synced with phone and then once its parked it totally forgets.
4. Back seat is still creased and now the door closes on the side of it, but to a lesser degree.
5. I was told that the rain sensor will only pick up on moving water over the sensor so if the windshield is wet and there is no rain on the sensor it will not work (?). Never had issues with this seemingly simple feature on any car.

The sad this is that the car was purchased for my father and we were happy to have delivery at the time of Father's Day. To make the above even worse, we brought our new car to a family brunch and our friends and family were excited to see the car. Before we even started up the car, we had a few people remarking about the poor quality control issues Tesla faces so we were eager to prove them wrong. Unfortunately, they were absolutely right and everything from the internet to the easter egg not working only proved them right.

Given the aforementioned problems, I am really confused on how to proceed. We've owned many cars ranging from antiques to exotics and we've not had any quality problems like the above. I am confident there will be more problems as we've really spent so little time with the car that other problems will also likely surface. Appreciate any advice...our whole family is bummed out with this experience...:(

i come from a Lexus as well. Lexus is a much nicer "luxury" car whereas a Tesla is an overpriced "premium" car.

now i don't want to make excuses for the troubles you're having as they're unacceptable, but a Lexus will always be quieter and more "buttoned together" in my opinion.

i have an early 2016 X and your problems sound worse than mine have been...if this is a recent build then it's not a good look. :(

I have a new one coming in August and I sure hope it doesn't have issues like that. The crooked steering wheel is very common. My last car had it and pretty much ever loaner. They can align the car and fix that so I really can't understand how the factory hasn't corrected that yet. It's probably just a fixture that needs to be adjusted but instead they just keep pumping them out and only fix it for the ones that complain. I believe in doing something right the first time.

I think you said it best that it seems like its an overpriced premium car. I'm just shocked that a 100k car would have some of these very basic quality issues (as well as the more complex issues). I expected a 2018 car to have a lot of the earlier issues cleared up by now.

Yea its quite shocking. I don't think they do any QA. I am now starting to read more and have read about people having cars with missing parts, panels not painted, and a laundry list of features not working at delivery and noted immediately thereafter. I'm not sure if the delivery center reviews the functionality of the cars after they receive shipment.

I've been in a loaner 9 weeks and I have 8 more to go. Have never had a situation like this with any other car manufacturer.

*Edit*
I do have to admit though with all these issues Tesla has gone above and beyond to make things right. It did take quite a few emails and phone calls though to get people to do something. I'll continue to stay with them because of the effort they made that they did not have to do.

I have a late 2016 X. These sort of quality issues are endemic to the X, and they are frankly inexcusable at this price point -- even more-so this far into builds. I have seats that are falling apart at the seams, exterior trim (flashing pieces) falling off, interior paint rubbed off at falcon door closing point, the chrome around windows sticks out wonky, interior storage sliding panel is broken, etc. On top of this, Tesla has made getting service and loaners so onerous (who knows how long they'll have your car if you drop it off!) that I'm more inclined to say "**** it" and just pray for an EV competitor to step up. It's disheartening for sure.

We had a bad initial experience with both our Model X and S as well. Not the same issues as you, but similar. We eventually filed in NJ under the NJ Lemon Law for our X, but have not followed through on it as of yet, and I am close to filing for my S as well to ensure I am covered. I would check the Florida Lemon Laws to make sure you are covered against issues never being resolved.

Now back to the issues at hand; Tesla seems to do a good job of rectifying issues after delivery reasonably well. All our issues with both our Model X and S were rectified including replacing the drivers seat on the S that had a crease. The downside is it takes your time and effort. The upside is that the X is a great car and we enjoy it every time we drive it. Both of our cars continue to have minor issues that are rectified by the SC, but I have changed my attitude a bit toward the car and think of it more like the first generation iPhone. When it works I love it, and when it has problems it is a pain in the a**. I try to just ignore the issues and get them fixed and enjoy the car as the rest of the experience is great.

I also have owned many cars like you and never had an experience like we have had with our Telsas (even my 1967 Firebird 400 convertible needed less things fixed), but overall the pluses for us outweigh the minuses. It's a bit of a shame as the cars could be simply amazing if they did not have all these issues, but they are basically first generation tech.

1,2 and 3 should be easy enough fixes if you are patient.
4 There is currently a firmware issue (it's going through some changes at the moment to speed up the browser) and will probably go away with an update as mine did - but don't expect the internet functionality to the amazing, it isn't!
5 have you tried other phones to rule out a phone fault?
6 I can't get that to work either, but haven't tried very hard
7 Mine are okay, not brilliant compared to some others
8 Not had that issue, sounds annoying but I'm sure they can fix it.
9 Never tried it!

Annoying though these things are, they don't seem THAT bad. My neighbour has a Lexus and no way would I want to swap my X for it, even if it did have any or all of these issues! I had a couple of very minor niggles on delivery, but the car is amazing to drive.

Good luck :(...I'm likely going to drop the car off today because I'll need the blue tooth operational to work on my daily commute and am paranoid about the horn not working as it should as well...
very disconcerting as i'm getting a may build X next week.

what is your VIN range?

VIN: 5YJXCDE25JF1024"XX"
Version: 2018.21.9 75dvdc11

My fear is that this is basically the issues we have within 2 days of local driving and less than two hours in the car. In regards to the bluetooth. Same issue with my dad's iphone as well which was previously sync'd.

Lexus is actually fantastic in regards to ownership experience--although the driving is anemic and I totally agree most cars lack the panache of the Tesla. Out of the dozen or so Lexus cars our family has had or the years none had falcon doors, but they all had reliably working features.

These are the types of threads that almost prevented me from buying my X. My P85D had one loose arm rest screw in 55,000 miles of hard driving. My new X - one month old has been flawless.

How cars can vary in quality level so much is crazy. Tesla is fortunate not to have a competitor (after 7 years is crazier).

I hope they get all your issues fixed quickly because I love my X more than any 4 wheeled vehicle I own.

So the service manager called me and said they could basically do nothing about the bluetooth unless I update all of our iphones. I have a 7 and have older software. My father has a 10 with newer software. I told him none of the phones register with the car and have to be manually added and the car. They claim this is a known issue with all iphone 10s with new software and old iphones with old software (W T F ??????). Sounds like some BS. I was also told by the service team that its probably better that the horn is on tighter because one would rather have a tighter horn / airbag than it be loose (W T F ?????).

I don't know if they are used to making fools of everyone, but I'm looking forward to them taking the car back unless this can all be addressed which is seemingly unlikely...

This is crazy. I read about people picking up their MX with these kind of issues and some people pick it up without any issues. I picked mine up 2 weeks ago and found nothing wrong. I feel like there are 2 production lines in the factory or maybe 2 different shifts of manufacturing people with different quality standards.

Ok, I can't help but be curious why you aren't updating your iPhone software? It's not just features being added--Updating is literally the only way to get bug fixes and (more importantly) security updates. It's sort of a false choice that you even get this option of not updating, considering all the growing risks you accept by not doing so.

At the very minimum, updating would allow you to rule out the phone OS as the source of problems with your X bluetooth connection.
