where is the "precondition my battery" button?

The same argument about wasting energy can be made from the other perspective. You’re wasting a lot of kinetic/potential energy during the drive that could have been turned into free electricity if the battery had only been preconditioned before departing using utility power. The amount of energy it consumes to precondition is around 2-3 kWh in a 50F garage, which I think could be equal, or less perhaps, when compared to the amount of regenerative braking energy harvested after a relatively short distance.

By not spending the energy before departing, you are preventing the car from being as efficient as it could be, which I think could be more of a waste of energy.

Depends on several factors
If you are leaving the house at 5:01am, and your super off peak rates end at 5am, warming the battery from 4:30am to 5am probably results in it being more cost effective overall, to warm the battery.
But if you are leaving the house at say, 9am, and the highest winter rates are in effect from say, 5:01am through 8:59am? Might be more cost effective to not precondition the battery...
 
I almost always heat up the cabin and use departure times for charging. I like the consistency in driving feel by doing that and it kind of eliminates the need for a heated steering wheel, though it’s good to hear the 2021 finally got those! Car 100% feels faster when doing this for the whole drive.
 
Hi, I'm a new MY owner and I was wondering this too.

We recently took a long road trip and stopped at a rest stop where there were 50kw chargers and used them. After the charge, the Tesla console had a message (almost a warning message?) that said battery should have been pre-conditioned

We have seen other 50kw and even 120kw charger's in the area that are not Tesla super charger's and I was wondering how I can manually start pre-conditioning the battery for charging?

You can’t. Preconditioning is only available for Supercharging (for now).

Too bad Tesla doesn't have somewhere in the charging UI to show the actual battery pack temp. It'd make a lot of these discussions much easier.
Maybe this is the old GEAR HEAD in me, but I agree, I wish Tesla would display more data that is available in 3rd party tools like ScanMyTesla. Not saying it needs to overwhelm owners with that same level of detail but offhand there are at least 3 data points I believe owners would find useful, especially if they lived in locations with extreme temperatures and or tracked their cars.

They could also keep it simple. Cold/warm/hot/pull over and shut the car off. Just like the old analog coolant temp gauges.

It's the Apple style of dealing with UX - show less but don't really block access to the under-the-hood data. Tesla can (albeit not easily) scramble CAN and use PKI between modules, cutting out SMT-like tools but they didn't. They want to keep the whole car to feel like "magic" where things just work... for enthusiasts and tinkerers it's annoying but from a perspective of a casual post-ICE user it's actually ideal. Today I tried to explain just the charging standards/plugs to a normal car user... they were lost after 30s.

What about when you are going to a electrify America charging station instead of a Tesla supercharger? How do you precondition the battery for that?
When I'm in Florida and use FPL 350 kWh chargers located next to Tesla 250 kWh chargers at the Florida Turnpike rest area in WPB, I just tell the navigation to go to Tesla Superchargers at the WPB location. It warms the battery and I plug into the FPL chargers using my CC1 adapter

that's a good idea. I charged for the first time at an electrify America yesterday, and if i ever have to do it again, that's what i'll do
 
Tell your car to charge for a preset departure time and the battery will be warm from charging.

Note: I do find It necessary to say I’m leaving 30 minutes earlier than I do, to finish the charge.

I had one instance where I sure wish I could have manually preheated the battery. I was on a trip to Joshua Tree and it was getaway day. No charging available at the hotel, but a SC 5 min away at a nearby casino. Parking outside on cold night plus a 7AM departure meant that my SC session started at a trickle. Took 30 min before the charge rate finally rose to a decent level and over an hour before I got enough charge to make it to the next SC.

If I had realized how bad it was going to be, I would have charged it the night before.
