When I got in my S this morning, there was an ad on the center display asking me to upgrade to the 75 kWh battery. There was no offer of a discount (still $9,000 incl. tax). It also said "Adds 25% more range," which by Tesla's own numbers is BS. The 60D is listed at 218 miles and the 75D is listed at 259 miles. That is a difference of 41 miles, or a 19% increase.

I'm not sure how I feel about this ad. Tesla has my email address for special offers or announcements. I don't think this ad was particularly special (i.e., it was telling me about something I already knew, and offered no discount or incentive). Not to mention that the ad made claims that were blatantly false. If they were offering a limited-time $1000 discount on the upgrade, or something to that effect, I would have felt a lot less negative towards the ad. But treating our center console as an avenue for milking more money out of us is unacceptable in my opinion.

Interesting. I would like to see a photo of that message.

As to the additional range claim, yes by EPA figures the difference is 19%. Perhaps at a steady 60mph the difference might be greater, but the message claim is misleading.

If I had been in your position this morning I would not have been bothered by the ad, as long as it did not appear again for another year!

Interesting about the future revenue stream possibilities with pop up ads! Waze annoys me with constant pop ups along my route suggesting coffee places.

Agree it's misleading by saying 25% range based on miles. Would be more accurately put as 25% more battery capacity: (75 - 60) / 60 = 25% but even this isn't really true.

The 60 is likely a real 60 while others have said the 75 is Probably closer to ~71 which pegs it at ~19%.

What matters in real life is how many kWh in the battery pack are usable by the driver. We can only make educated guesses about that, but we know that the S60 does not provide a usable 60kWh anymore than the S75 provides a usable 75kWh.

75 is 25% greater than 60. That is accurate. But the EPA range of the S75 is not 25% greater than the S60, and that is what matters to the driver. So Tesla is being disingenuous if they say something like "The S75 has 25% greater range than the S60" without providing real world data to back it up.

I also got the ad this morning and thought it was very odd. Who gets into their car in the morning, sees the ad and decides to make a $9k purchase on a whim? How many 60 drivers do they think aren't aware they can upgrade to the 75?

As the commenter above said if you are going to start doing pop-up ads you got to at least have some sort of discount incentive attached. You do a pop-up of the option for $5k and you might have my attention. It is a relatively minor thing to dismiss the pop-up, but the whole thing just doesn't feel right. Sending me a reminder email about the option seems reasonable, but putting ads on my launch screen should not be a new normal.

This is a very slippery slope. What's next? We checked your logs and noticed you went to Panera six times last month so here's a Panera ad.

Did you agree when you bought the car to have ads pushed to you?!

I'd be livid if I saw an ad on my center console.

Livid? Unacceptable? Wow, I cannot imagine letting something this trivial affect me in such a manner.

Even if the 25% range increase was true, it wouldn't be for daily driving. Why? Because as a 75, you can charge 100% every day without supposedly shortening battery life. But as a 60, you can charge to 100% every day and you're only really charging to 85%, so the range increase only helps you when you need to actually exceed 218 miles on an SC to SC trip which will almost never happen.

I'm waiting for the add that asks me to upgrade my 85 to the 100 for $9K :p

Speaking for myself, I would indeed be very upset. I hate ads with a passion. If I started seeing ads in the center console I'm not sure if it would upset me enough to sell the car, but I would consider it if nothing could be done. It would be my last Tesla purchase.

You think Tesla providing ads on the 17" screen is trivial?

What stops Tesla from only providing ads for Tesla related products. Would a full blown 17" ad for... another product be acceptable? How about Cornflakes? the new iPhone? Viagra? Which presidential candidate to vote for?

Yes, I think a single ad on a Tesla console is trivial. When and if they start bombarding one with advertisements I will likely change my opinion. I certainly won't get worked up over a single ad. Life is far too short to get upset over such a trivial issue. It is most likely a trial marketing method.

Just one more thing I had no idea was supposed to enrage me until I logged on to TMC.

    I love the internet.

I wasn't angry...just mildly annoyed. Pretty much, it just worried me that this may become a trend, in which case, I would be angry.

Actually all ready on the slope sliding head first: every interaction on the phone, web, etc is really just a way for an advertiser to get real data and advertise to you. They care less about tracking more about selling you stuff....
