When I moved to Irvine 7 years ago, the surrounding area was totally empty. Now it’s overpopulated and filled with homes....the lines at grocery stores at 8 PM are longer than the lines at Disneyland....and traffic!!!!

The housing situation is really getting out of control. Among my co-workers who are younger than their mid-30s (myself included), no one can afford to own homes. Everyone lives with family, rents apartments with roommates, etc... Several new employees have simply left the area due to housing costs. Keep in mind that we're all engineers and have salaries that would be considered very well-off in other parts of the country. But here, it's barely enough if you want to be on your own.

I feel like we've lost a few generations in California.

It is worth pointing out that California is a huge state with wildly varying housing costs. For instance, our relatively new 1700 sq ft home in Shasta County, with solar, good insulation, heat pumps, and views of snowcapped mountains, is estimated to be worth about $300k, while our son's similar sized but much older house in the bay area is 4 times more costly.
