Thanks for the write up. How many km are these trips roughly, and I'm assuming just one charging session away from home?
About 250km round trip. And no need to charge while out for either. As I said it only uses around 45% of a full battery in the 3 and 75% battery in the Y.
I have a sister down the Gold Coast which is a 400km round trip and I can very comfortably do that in the 3 without a a top up charge. Usually getting home with around 12% battery left from 100%. But I can see in the Y that trip would be impossible without a top up charge at the supercharger down there despite the claimed range of the Rear-Wheel Y being 455km.

Seeing as I have had mine for 6 days now I guess I have graduated from the "Waiting Room" thread but I wanted to do a report in on how I have found it so far incase others are interested.

Firstly I love it! We also have a M3LR so a lot of what I am going to say below is going to be influenced by my experiences in that as comparison.

The ride/suspension is perfect. It's a bit stiff compared to other cars perhaps but it's no stiffer than the 3 and way less stiff than my previous Ford V8 FPV. I think it feels great and I have the 20" Induction wheels.

It's a lot bigger. Side by side the difference is quite noticeable but when you are driving it you notice it way more. Much higher driving position and road feel, and the boot space is obviously way bigger but I was surprised how much extra room there is.

The thing that's not bigger though is the rear window. You can't see a heap out the rear view mirror but it's not a deal breaker or anything.

Range is one of my biggest concerns. We often take drives to Brisbane and in the M3LR we can get into the city and drive around a bit and then back home and that uses about 45% battery charge round trip. We did the trip in the Y and it used 73%. So I can see us having to use charging stations (away form home) a lot more than we have to in the 3. I know the Y is just a standard range and it's not a slouch when it comes to range or anything but it just surprised me is all.

Vision only. My 3 which is exactly a year old came with a radar whereas the Y is vision only for autopilot etc. This has both positive and negative effects in my experience so far. It may or may not be related but I think the Y is much better at recognising other vehicles and speed signs and green light chimes and a few other things compared to my 3. And during the day the autopilot is every bit as good as it is on my 3 with radar if not better. The problem comes when driving with autopilot at night. I always have auto high beam turned off because it is the worst implementation of that feature I have ever come across. ICE cars from 10 years ago work better than the Tesla version does. This is not an issue in my 3 because once it's off it's off and I just change manually using the stalk. Because the Y is vision only though whenever I engage autopilot at night it will also automatically turns on auto high beam because it wants as much light as it can to navigate by. I didn't notice at first until I started having people flash their lights at me for not dipping my high beams. I changed it back and thought I must have accidentally turned them on. But then I changed lanes and re engaged autopilot and on they came again. It seems no matter how many times you manually turn of auto high beams the second you disengage and re engage autopilot they come back on again. So this is just a MASSIVE pain! We will probably be taking the 3 if ever we need to do any night driving or alternatively just not use autopilot on that trip because I can't be turning it off manually all the time while driving and I can't drive with auto high beam active without pissing off every other driver on the road because high beams never turn off in time. I guess this isn't really a Y problem it will be the case with any of the new cars that come with Vision Only. But it has certainly tainted my first impressions.

Over all though it's just fantastic and my wife is supper happy with her new car.
If anyone has any other specific question I'm happy to answer them.
This is a great write up and thank you for sharing. Please consider making this it's own separate thread for others who don't have the time to keep up with the Waiting Rooms posts and for those interested in comparing the new batch to the older cars.

Bjorn has replicated your auto high beam issue exactly. My experience with my M3 is the same, it's a terrible implementation of auto high beam and I've liked not using it.

@muddie, thank you SO much for this write up!

Great to hear your thoughts, though I'm a bit surprised about the range. I do have a few questions...
- which one is nicer to drive?
- given that the Y is a bit slower than your 3, is it still punchy enough to get ahead at the lights, overtake quickly etc.
- if you had to choose one, would you take the 3 or the Y?
- not sure if you have kids, but if you do, how squishy is it with them in the back of the 3?

Thanks, @muddie ... I'm sure there will be more questions later, but that's it for now 😊

Thanks, I usually just deduct 20% from the WLTP for my own sanity, so I'll consider YSR will have around 364 km on 100%. I'm surprised for 250km you needed that extra charge. Maybe the weather's not helping?
I still must not be explaining myself properly sorry. When you asked about having to charge in the first question I thought I covered that I didn’t have to in my answer but you still commented in the quote above that you were surprised I had to do an extra charge for the 250km trip.

So just to be perfectly clear.
I charged the Y at home to 100%.
I went on a 250km round trip without charging at all.
When I got back home I had 27% battery charge left in the car.
Therefore I used 73% of the battery capacity to make the trip.
No extra charges needed but it did not meet my expectations for range.

If I had to choose I would take the 3 for sure. The Y is absolutely gutless in comparison and I like fast cars. It’s probably fast enough to get you out of trouble but you barely notice the acceleration in it when you plant your foot. Which is vastly different to the roller coaster like, motion sickness inducing, neck straining, acceleration in my 3. Also the range is so much better and it handles corners better as well being a lower centre of gravity so it is nicer to drive. I do have three kids but they are all adults. We haven’t actually had anyone ride in the back yet but there is a heap more room in there than in my 3 and I have had my 3 adult children in the back of that without too much drama so the Y will be luxurious in comparison.

Thanks @muddie ... that's really helpful!
Guess I'll just have to test drive them both again, and pay more attention (first time went a bit like "Wheeeeeeee! I'm driving a Tesla!" lol 😂)

I've had my MY SR for about a week too and I thought I'd add some comments to yours:
  • Range is actually pretty good - I get about 360km on the highway. Can't complain. Especially its 100% every day
  • Agree that the auto high beam is the worst implementation I have ever seen. I don't know how it is allowed - I'm constantly getting flashed by other drivers. It needs to be fixed or permanently disabled imo. Tesla probably should have kept the radar.
  • Rear window visibility is terrible, but it's really a Sportback style.
  • Acceleration is ok. Seems to be gimped at low speeds, fortunately picks up over about 40km/h.
  • Handles really well.
  • Huge amount of space in the boot and second row.
  • Sentry mode consumes excessive electricity. About 10% for 24 hours. Badly implemented, needs some optimisation.
Overall I'm very happy. A few foibles here and there but still a good car.
