EXCLUSIVE: Saudi Arabian Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman says his country won’t support a COP28 agreement to phase down fossil fuels.

After the case of COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber the mask slips again.

With reference to the quoted post I think that the view of former Vice President Al Gore, who said that the annual United Nations COP climate summits need to be reformed so that petrostates don’t wield so much power, is CORRECT!

In the inevitable crescendo of hype and greenwashing that’s coming our way, we’ll doubtless hear a lot about industrial carbon capture technologies that attempt to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The COP 28 host country, the United Arab Emirates, the world’s largest oil companies and even programs in the U.S. Department of Energy are working hard to push this stuff.

Don’t be fooled. It’s mostly a distraction from what we really need to do right now: phase out fossil fuels and deploy more effective climate solutions. Industrial carbon capture technologies come in many flavors, but the most prominent are carbon capture and storage (CCS), which removes carbon dioxide from highly concentrated point sources like power plants, and direct air capture (DAC), which attempts to remove CO2 from open air, where concentrations are much lower.

As you can imagine, the folks in Big Oil love it. Vicki Hollub, the CEO of Occidental Petroleum (which just received hundreds of millions from the Department of Energy for carbon capture projects), has said that “direct capture technology is going to be the technology that helps to preserve our industry over time. This gives our industry a license to continue to operate for the 60, 70, 80 years that I think it’s going to be very much needed.” Mission accomplished. Carbon capture is being used to distract the world from rapidly phasing out fossil fuels, all on the taxpayer’s dime.

Since the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry at COP28 is doing his best to achieve NET ZERO, I think that also we all should strive to reach NET ZERO.
So I wish to advice to all TMC Members to read this book giving guidance on the NET ZERO matter.

The book profiles 15 households across the US and Canada that have cut emissions by 75% or more or are at least 75% below their local peers.

Scientists say we need to reduce our use of fossil fuels by 80% or more to avert the most dangerous effects of global warming. But is such a drastic cut possible without totally disrupting our lifestyle? The short answer is yes, as the contributors of this book show. They imagined a future where each home powers not only itself, but the cars surrounding it. They do this with no fumes, no soot, and no emissions, from a fuel source that will never run out or jump in price. They show this future is possible now as they drive to net 0.

Available through Amazon.

Agree with you David. And I would like to point out that the 75% cut emissions mentioned by you and the net zero lifestyle can be achieved also saving money.

Don't understand. I mean that IPCC considers almost sure that the Temperature Deviation of 1.5 degrees Celsius set by the Agreement of Paris will be overtaken in a few years and that for this reason we will be forced to implement Carbon Sequestration.

Also another Institution, the ESA Earth Observation Department, states that overshooting the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius set by the Agreement of Paris is fast becoming inevitable (read the mentioned document).
So not only IPCC but also ESA states that we will overtake the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius soon.

Another document saying that according to scientists the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius set by the Agreement of Paris for the Temperature Deviation will be broken in seven years.

In this video you can see last 800,000 years of Earth's CO2 history in 30 seconds.
In last 800,000 years CO2 concentration in the atmosphere never overtook 300 ppm till to our days that we have reached 420 ppm.
And the rise of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere started from the preindustrial period.

A proposal that would allow industries to permanently stash climate-polluting carbon dioxide beneath US Forest Service land puts those habitats and the people in or near them at risk, according to opponents of the measure. Chief among opponents’ concerns is that carbon dioxide could leak from storage wells or pipelines and injure or kill people and animals, as well as harm the trees in the forests and their habitat, said Victoria Bogdan Tejeda, attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity.

More broadly, the measure would “provide a powerful incentive to continue to burn fossil fuels”, Furnish said. “It’s the opposite of a virtuous cycle.”
