Current Delivery Times

I called the Dublin, CA SC and spoke with a delivery a specialist. We talked for (and I'm not kidding) almost 30 minutes. He was awesome and answered a ton of my questions. He said he's been with Tesla for almost five years and has gone through all of this multiple times. Here's what I learned:
  • In general, they are expecting most CA deliveries to occur the second half of June. What happens is most of the cars that are made in April and May go international and east coast. Beginning of June is midwest and west (not counting California), and then last 2 weeks are typically California. He did say though that they will hold cars in almost all areas of the US till June (what we're seeing now)
  • They do get small batches of cars (like they do now) but they have no control over the config. From what I saw in Dublin, they were mostly white cars (didn't look to close when I was passing yesterday). He said those will probably be delivered in the next 1-2 weeks and priority will be the config, order date, and whether or not all of your delivery info is complete and submitted.
  • For Dublin, CA specifically, if you live within 30 miles, they will almost for sure all be home deliveries. They don't have the capacity to handle the amount of deliveries they're expecting and it's actually easier for them to do home deliveries
  • He said it super important to be ready to take delivery within 3 days of getting the text and/or phone call once you've been hard matched to a VIN. Their system of matching is automated and it will un-assign you after three days if you don't confirm delivery and have your final payment/financing in place
  • In regards to payment, if you're doing 3rd party financing and they are mailing the check to Tesla, he suggested having your loan office physically take a picture of the check and send you that and the tracking number. They can release the vehicle to you even if they haven't received your payment yet but only if you provide them with those two things. Otherwise you have to wait till Tesla receives the check and confirms final payment
  • If you're putting a down payment separately from your financing, that must be done online. You cannot bring a personal check on delivery day
  • He mentioned nothing about a firmware update and I didn't ask -- especially after learning what I said above. This really does seem par for the course for the most part.
In a nutshell, if you're in California, don't expect your car till the second half of June. There will be exceptions to this but most won't get it till then. This actually helped me a lot as I feel like I don't have to check the web site every (okay, multiple time a) day. My expectations are set now at getting it by the end of June and I'm fine with that.
Super useful, thank you!

For those in Chicago following along at home. They somehow figured out a way to jam even more Y's into the lot on Grand. MFG dates of everything are between 4/29ish and 5/15ish.

Snapped a picture of the headlights on one of the Ys with a 5/15 date... I wouldn't know if it's a "new" headlight or not (don't know what the new thing is or why I should even care but for those that do, have at it.)

Still wishing that I had the rosetta stone on the colored dots... each car has a different arrangement, color set, etc. They clearly mean something.

Let the speculation begin... LOL

Those are not the new headlights... The new ones do not have the reflective bottom portion its black in the new ones & less reflective looking over all to match more with the blackout look of the car

I agree but I also don’t think they’d be delivering hundreds of cars per SC per day either at this point. If you look at the tracking spreadsheet, there are small waves of deliveries the first 2 months of a quarter but it’s nothing compared to the final month.
Right. They’d rather have the inventory in place, if they can, so they can sell it ASAP once this issue is fixed. Particularly because if you don’t ship to East Coast by mid June, cars won’t get to the East Coast.

I wouldn’t take delivery of a car built during this period, personally. It’s why I “unmatched” from my inventory delivery and ordered custom again. The wait sucks, but I will have the car for a while and if something goes wrong or breaks, I don’t always want to think “man, I should never have taken delivery during that time…”. I am certain the Ys will be safe and totally fine once released, but Tesla got in my head this time.

One other interesting nugget was that he said the big jump in dates a lot of us saw earlier this week was due to demand. Basically Tesla saw a ton of orders come in and had to refactor their production schedule. So for example, a car (like mine) that was scheduled to be built next week and delivered locally was instead allocated to an East Coast order since they want to try and get them out there before end of quarter.

Was thinking about this as well. Might be worth holding till Austin is delivering MY’s

I was told once the firmware was done I can pick up same day.

Drove by the Raintree SC in Scottsdale today, there were probably 75 Model Ys and 50 Model 3s sitting in their overflow lot. Fenced off and had a sleeping baby in the back so couldn’t stop for pics, but based on the calipers most appeared to be LRs. All colors, heavy on white though. Not as many as EOQ in March, but still more than you’d expect to see if they were actively delivering.

Well last weekend at this time we were hopeful that people would receive VINs or delivery this week.
Now here we go again another week later and still no action. Will it happen this week?

My prediction is we're all here a week later, we're up to page 330 on this post and nearly nobody here has received their VIN.

I first read that as the Ys being fenced off and one having a sleeping baby in the back! Geez. Too much forum for me…

How soon should I work on financing (Tesla or 3rd party)? I don’t want unnecessary hits on my credit.
Also, in my state the vin number has to be on the insurance policy and I can’t get an estimate without it. I honestly, feel stuck.
Credit scoring takes into account multiple hits on the same type of loan within around 30 days. They know you’ll be shopping around. The concern would be your loan offer will expire before getting a car.

As for insurance, I would just upload a current policy to complete your profile. Once you get a VIN, your agent should be able to act fast. The SC I talked to today emphasized that non-completed profiles are deprioritized (despite what my SA told me when I ordered).

I applied for my loan through Tesla and got Wells Fargo.. Their inquiry does NOT show on my credit report.. No idea why.. My credit score actually went up since I applied for the loan from 825 to 829 (on the 850 scale)..

Inquiries only affect your score slightly and it’s more about how many you’ve had over a 2 year period. If you have one or 2 inquires in the last 2 years then your score probably won’t be impacted. If it’s your 6th or 7th then it would start to impact.

My SA reached out to me today out of nowhere and said VINs are starting to come tomorrow and they will start calling people on Tuesday (at his location anyway). I ordered March 17th so he expects me to be in the early wave. He didn't say what the delay was in the first place though.
Anyway, I'm trying to stay hopeful because this was unprovoked. He reached out to me. I'll let you all know if a VIN shows up in the next two days.
