It has been 48 hours and still unable to reach a delivery specialist to unmatch my June-built MY. SA said all I have to do is reply back to the delivery text I received. Easy enough on my end but no one has acted on my request to unmatch. If Tesla still plans to deliver the MY on Monday then my fear is it will be very difficult to reach anymore to refuse delivery, or does that happen through the app/email?

It is a 45-min drive to the SC but I just may have to do that today to speak to a live delivery specialist and ensure things get done right.

Last Sunday we picked up our Model Y. Below is how our journey unfolded.

Order
2021 MY LR | ⚪White exterior | White Interior | 5 Seat | 20" Induction | Tow | No FSD
🗓️ Ordered 5/10 | Profile completion: 5/11
  • Placed on May 20th and profile completed the following day
  • Order included trade-in of our 2018 Model 3 LR RWD & private financing (from M3 #teamblack to MY #teamwhite)
    • despite all other reports Teslas offer before tax incentives was best of all estimates received (local dealership came close but convenience of Tesla made that decision simple)
    • As an existing member Digital Credit Union (DCU) were awesome. I was already pre-approved, and no credit-pull was required.
      • Note: because of the spike in new customers wait times are longer than I have ever seen before. Customer service was top notch though!
The Loooonnnnggg wait….
  • Actually, I cannot complain there are others that ordered before me still waiting and I pray you get your car very soon.
  • Estimated Delivery date (EDD):
    • Originally date following profile completion: 5-12 weeks
    • EDD started to show timeframes in June in late May/early-June
    • In mid-June my EDD shifted to September for over a week then started to indicate a July delivery. (Note: EDD was a lot more erratic than this summary)
    • Took delivery 10 weeks after order
  • During this time my trade-in estimate expired twice. Renewing was easy – I just needed to submit new odometer readings and was typically finalised within 48hrs. Estimate didn’t change either time.
Vehicle assignment, the blue button and delivery schedule
  • July 13: Trade-in estimate expired for the 2nd time. Resubmitted odometer reading.
  • July 14: Received email in the early hours that my “VIN is Now Available”
  • July 14: Logged into Tesla account and accepted Tesla Vision disclosure (blue button) - 228xxx VIN assigned
  • July 14: scheduled Phoenix delivery on Sunday, 18th July
  • July 14: called SA and confirmed my assigned VIN had bio weapon defence mode and had a build date of July-12
  • July 15: Trade-in estimate finalized again for the same original value
  • July 16: Called SA and confirmed car was ready for delivery
Trade-in and Delivery (July 18)
  • Model 3 trade-in was seamless
    • Checked in on arrival, one of the delivery reps checked odometer, had us sign some DMV documents, validated odometer and that was it (15mins max)
  • Model Y touchless delivery was good also
    • Car was covered in back dust
    • Identified and noted various cosmetic issues on the interior and exterior which have been scheduled to be corrected in two weeks. Some I have been able to clean up myself or was corrected during paint correction. Can share if anyone is interested.
  • Dropped into Hyer Quality Detail on July 19 for full frontal PPF, Ceramic coating and window tint.
    • 3-day turnaround – picked up on the Wednesday afternoon
    • These guys did an amazing job!
This post is already quite long so I’ll post key learnings from my experience separately. TO BE CONTINUED.

Key Learnings and advice for current and prospective customers:
  • Before ordering find a good SA -
    • Best way to do this is via a referral from another recent customer or to schedule a test drive at your local Tesla store.
  • Be nice to your SA.
  • Don’t get finance approval too early –
    • chances are that it will expire before you get assigned a VIN.
    • Either choose the self-arranged financing or Cash option when you originally order – you can always change once you are assigned a VIN.
  • Never trust your EDD until you have scheduled your delivery.
    • It is NEVER accurate.
    • Save yourself the emotional stress and avoid constantly checking (something I wasn’t able to do) OR acknowledge that the EDD isn’t correct.
  • Use groups like this one for support, sanity and education.
    • There is so much knowledge in this nearly 1000-page thread!
    • So many individuals here actively sharing and helping others – be kind and join-in on the conversation
    • My experience was that this group was so much more helpful and nice compared to some of the FB groups out there (but they also contain some good info)
  • Connect with others locally
    • There are other threads on here that have been setup by state.
    • This is great for region specific info like rebates or experiences with a specific delivery location
  • On delivery day –
    • Take with you quick detail spray and a microfibre cloth (or 2). Important if you want to inspect paint without scratching.

As my first new vehicle purchase in the US this has been a memorable experience and I thank everyone on this forum for their support along the way!

That is a fantastic review of the process, thank you! If you don't mind me asking, how much was the frontal PPF, ceramic, and tint? Had you done those sorts of things on the M3 trade in, and if so did they have any impact on the trade-in value?

Is it home delivery or you are going to service center? If home delivery in your app, you should have option to accept delivery. I believe you can reject too. Not sure though. If it's service center pickup, don't show up. No one will force you to take it. You should be fine.

Very thorough and great advice!

You were the type of student that I would cheat off of in HS. =P

Great, detailed advice. Thank you!

Update:
FZj86cQ.jpg

She's perfect! 3 miles, Bioweapons Defense Mode, USB stick, no mud flaps, no PPF. We had two Teslas already and know what to look for and have not found any issues.

Hope y'all get your cars soon!
Congrats! Great to see the family all smiles! Don’t forget to drop in to check on all of us still waiting! Assuming the delivery and service was good?!

Everything was good! Definitely go pick up instead of having it delivered if you can because we inspected the car (on the outside) before hit "Accept" online. There wasn't much to it, and we didn't need anything to be shown to us because we had two Model 3s so it was 100% touchless/interactionless. There were people around if we needed anything.

Will check in on my peeps for sure!

It is home delivery. My SA responded this morning saying they unmatched my VIN, as requested, even though “he’s not supposed to do that”. I guess only delivery specialist are supposed to do that. My SA is not at the SC where I’m picking up and although the VIN momentarily disappeared from my account, moments later it is still tied to me (and preventing me from being re-matched to another VIN).

I went to the SC in person to sort this out and am glad I did. I saw the car in person and it has several flaws that I would have rejected anyways, just like what someone else probably already did. There is a dent in the rear hatch, the hood is misaligned, no HEPA filter of course, and the hood hinges have paint peeling off.

I am definitely glad to wait for another VIN. I don’t know how correct the folks at the Rocklin SC are but they’re telling to prepare to go back to the end of the queue. At first one of them even scared me by saying I would have to pay new current pricing if I unmatched and rejected this VIN, which makes no sense. Anyways, I confirmed with them to please unmatch me ASAP. It is surprising that they can’t do it on the spot. I received some explanation about how I matching places the car in holding and the then have to match it to someone else before they can unmatch me.

I’m in Toronto and my delivery date was pushed from three weeks in August to the final week in August until the first two weeks in September. (Approximately).
I‘m hoping the dates will mysteriously change to an earlier delivery window.
My real frustration is the connector which I ordered on June 20 and has not appeared. Anyone aware of a connector shortage?

Someone also said (I think this is what he was saying) that when you're given a VIN you'll also be given an electronic option to accept it, reject it, be put on hold, something like that. I haven't gotten there yet and I don't know precisely what the options are or mean or their consequences, but maybe someone who's been through that stage can clarify it.

Now that there's been a price increase I'd definitely like to know what options preserve your original order price and which don't. both with respect to accepting, changing, rejecting delivery dates and also configuration changes. If I decide to add a two hitch, do I go back to the end of the line, do I go back to the end of the line AND get assessed the higher price, etc.
As long as you do not change your spec (color, wheel, etc.), you will keep the price agreed upon with your initial order agreement. Note that newer order agreements (June and later) state you have to take delivery within 90 days of ordering.

I don’t see the 90 day thing as being easily enforceable, especially when most people wait more than 90 days after ordering to take delivery. Some significantly more than 90 days. But maybe if you continually reject deliveries without good reasons, maybe Tesla will determine that to be not in good faith and threaten to cancel your order. I’ve not heard of that happening though. The closest thing I’ve heard is Tesla asking the LR RWD reservation holders to change spec, or cancel.

Edit/addition: if you want the Tesla tow bar, just order it after delivery. It’s $200 extra compared to ordering with new car and you’ll have to take it to a SC to install (included in price). That way you won’t lose your place in queue and get bumped to current pricing.
