Eastern Canada Superchargers

Port Hope is listed as "limited service" on the Tesla in-car navigation screen.

We charged on 1A at 80kW, which is reasonable, as I've only ever seen 88kW maximum a few times (mostly Barrie on weekends) in our early 2013 A-battery pack Model S. The 4B charger Tesla sign was lit up signalling it should be operational, but when I plugged in, there was no power. I moved to 1A and had no problems there.

In Kingston, we charged twice tonight (to show friends how it works) and both times we saw ~80kW from two different chargers, so no problems for us at this site. Well situated with the Hotel 100 meters away!

I charged on 1A with no problems last night.

I am disappointed in Tesla's supercharger status notification system. It seems they have a canned message to display when you navigate to a supercharger that is having issues: the top message heading said it was closed (if I can remember correctly) and the rest of the message said it was limited service. Meanwhile the icon displayed on the map seemed to indicate it was not in operation and the nav did not want to stop me there. This was extremely ambiguos and I was anxious about getting back from Belleville not really knowing whether the supercharger was working or not and not having charging at my destination in Bellville. It turned out the Port Hope stalls that were active were working fine ((except for 4B?).

It would be better to have a more detailed report of supercharger status. For example they should state that 4 of 8 superchargers are working 100% or that one is working at 80% capacity or whatever.

In Port Hope, 4 of 8 stalls were lit, the other four were dark, not powered.
4B didn't work for us, 1A did.

My wife felt that the warning that Port Hope had service issues was useful, as the likelihood of coming to it with potentially only 3 stalls working was that cars might queue. Having not experienced queuing (yet), we want to avoid that if possible.

I'll be range charging tomorrow morning before we do the return trip, just in case Port Hope is offline fully.
Fortunately, we have an 85 kWh battery pack, so we have the luxury of doing so.

Weird... I can never seem to get those kind of numbers on my A-pack car... ever. Tesla says my battery is okay, but I really want them to do a thorough investigation at my next "Annual". This along with my excessive vampire drain (5+ % every 24 hrs) and no fan action ever when supercharging no matter how hot.

One trick, I am a bit of a lead foot left lane driver on long road trips. I don't spare the horses, or the battery. It may be that higher speeds require more kW to the motor, drawing more current from the battery, keeping the pack warmer so that when I arrive, the cells have lower internal resistance.

I only saw 40 kW at Kingston charger after the car sat all day, whereas we got 80 kW at the same charger the previous night after arriving from Port Hope at speed (with range mode on, which reduces cooling to the pack by the way).

Just something to keep in mind...there may be differences in driving conditions that mean your pack isn't warm enough?
Dunno, just trying to help...cheers, and drive safe!

Report from our Kingston to Toronto today.

Used the new WAZE browser site today and really liked what that developer has done. Info is on a thread elsewhere on this forum.

Range charged while eating lunch at Boston Pizza. navigation said we could do the drive back without stopping in Port Hope.

We decided to try Port Hope anyway, but there were 6 cars and only 4 working bays, so we left without charging.

Arrived home with 14% SOC . Put the car on the plug immediately to take advantage of the warm battery .

Glad to have 85 kWh pack!

Travelling to Chicoutimi this weekend from Toronto and a few observations.
Only two stalls were working in Port Hope and there were three cars wanting to charge.
Kingston was great but the food at Boston Pizza wasn't. Might try Swiss Chalet on my return.
Now the interesting part. Arrived at Place Vertu Saturday evening around 8. Deadsville. Mall closed. No Timmy's or anything around.
Must be a Quebec thing to not have amenities nearby. There was nobody around. I just topped off to get me to Drummondville.
Again, Deadsville. It's right by a mall that, like all Quebec malls, closes at 5 pm Saturdays. Again, no ammenities nearby. There is a Scores restaurant that appeared closed as it was 10:20 or so in the evening now. Even then, it looked like a 10 minute walk. The Timmy's I couldn't find at all..
I charged about half an hour just enough to get me to the Alt Hotel in Quebec city on Laurier St. Nice hotel, expensive though.
They had a Tesla charger right by the door so I was able to get a full charge overnight, well actually 4 hours.
Sunday morning, I left for the Saguenay region along hwy 73 to Chicoutimi.
Very nice and picturesque. Lots of fir trees and lakes. Highly recommend it in the summer.
Got to be a little mountainous about half way and my energy use started climbing. At this point I had a rated range of about 250 km and my projected range said 150 km. Ouch!
So I slowed down, even if range mode on, to about 100 km/hr and as soon as I got over the mountains, my range got much better as I slowed to about 90 because there was sleet and snow on the road. Lots of the white stuff in the mountains.
When I got to the hotel Montagnais, I had about 120 rated range left but my projected range said about 230 km. Never seen such a discrepancy the other direction like this before.
Plugged into the Tesla charger Sunday night and Monday afternoon will be heading back home.
Only this time, won't be staying in Quebec City so I'll have to look for a public charger while I have a 3 hour dinner. Anyone know of any place there that I could do this without staying at a hotel there?

All in all, a very rewarding trip to a part of Canada not many venture to. I would highly recommend it. The poutine and the Tourtiere's here are superb!

If you walk to the end of the parking lot near Boulevard Saint - Joseph, there is a Tim Horton's there right adjacent to the mall parking lot...about a 5 minute walk.

See the Drummondville map

Which location are you referring to? Drummondville?
Which way from where the car is in the charging spot, left or right?
Thanks

Google Drummondville Supercharger and put it on satellite view. The direct line to the Tim Horton's is about 200 meters, if you don't mind scaling an embankment. Otherwise, count on 300 meters.

Do you have dual chargers? There are many 30A options in QC City for dinner, but here are the 40A+ ones:

Bistango 80A This is the Hotel ALT's restaurant. They will activate the station for you. Actually, even if you are just visiting one of their other tenants (Starbucks or Sixth Sense) they will allow you to recharge.) One of the owners of Sixth sense owns a Tesla (as does one of the owners of ALT Hotel). Sixth Sense is a restaurant where you eat a mystery menu in total darkness. The servers are visually impaired.

Archibald 40A (Micro-brewer/Restaurant). Their Quebec City, Lac Beauport, and Trois-Rivieres destination chargers show up in the car's navigation system.

Sepia Hotel/Le Galopin Restaurant 40A - 70A Known for tartar. On the Quebec City (North) side of the bridge. Beware of the navigation system attempting to send you on a ridiculous detour over the river and back. They have two 40A/240V HPWCs and one Sun Country 70A/208V.

That's the best place to eat there by far, I always make a point of eating there while charging. Worst Ontario SuC I've been to as far as food choices has to be Comber, especially for dinner :-(
Yes Panera is good.... For Boston Pizza I also highly recommend the Rustic Italian pizza.

On another note, there is a new casino opening in Belleville soon. It's probably too late, but who could we bug about getting some L2 charging there?

Yes, the Sepia is where I'm staying. Nice place.
Decided to stay overnight.
One Tesla charger of the two not working though!
