HW 2.5 or 2.1?

Hi. The most important quote I have read about this topic is the bold section below:
“However, we still expect to achieve full self-driving capability with safety more than twice as good as the average human driver without making any hardware changes to HW 2.0. If this does not turn out to be the case, which we think is highly unlikely, we will upgrade customers to the 2.5 computer at no cost.” Source

In other words, Tesla thinks upgrading AP2.0 cars to AP2.5 is unlikely to be necessary to achieve twice the safety level of an average human driver.

By the way, to give a little more perspective, I have looked into the sales numbers and I can tell you the following:
  • Tesla made 48,366 cars with no Autopilot until 19 Sep 2014.
  • They made 119,326 cars with AP1.0 until 16 Oct 2016,
  • 73,270 cars with AP2.0 until 28 Jul 2017, and
  • by the end of this year, there will be 77,020 AP2.5 cars. By mid-2018, this number will increase to 282,573.
