Opted for a medium sized battery to maximize options, my commute is only about 30 miles and the once in a while weekend trips should not be more than 150 miles anyway. Anything longer and we will probably take the larger SUV.

Just so I don't have to read all the posts, what happens when you get THE email for TM? I am P6280, and I will be out of the country for a few weeks during the period my number will come up. How long do you have to respond to TM?

Email your Tesla contact now to let them know the dates you'll be gone and that you'll have limited or no email access and they can note it on your account.

Wow. I was 1722 and finalized on Aug 10 and mine said December. Cool that the new finalized orders are saying Dec/Nov!
...lots of MSP's!

Yeah I am kinda surprised. I am P6316 and two different Tesla folks at the get Amped event said they thought I would see my car in March of 2013 but given that P58xx is being told Nov/Dec maybe I'll get it in January! or maybe the system is handing out bad dates?

On the "finalize" page that have some FAQs:

How long do I have to complete the order process?

You may place your order at any time.

Once I complete the order process, how long will I wait before delivery?

Your Model S will be delivered about three months after you complete the order process. About a month before delivery, your Delivery Specialist will contact you to arrange delivery and payment.

Also, at the "Confirm Design" step, they give a delivery estimate for orders completed by a certain date, and the date is 30 days after the email was sent. So I take that to mean, as long as I complete my order in 30 days, I keep my place in line. If I complete my order after that, I'll be in line after everyone who has already completed their order.

Bonus Depreciation. It is a fairly complex situation due to Luxury Vehicle limits in Code Section 280F and the GVW>6,000 lbs loophole (and Section 179), but basically if TMS weighed more than 6,000 lbs GVW, I think we could depreciate the entire vehicle cost in 2012, for an asset placed in service in 2012, due to the 100% Bonus Depreciation allowance. Unfortunately TMS is slightly less than 6,000 lbs GVW, which means we are subject to the Luxury Vehicle limits in Code Section 280F, which means we can take a maximum per year of $11,160 (which I rounded up to $11,500 above, sorry).

If TMS was a computer instead of a vehicle, we could absolutely depreciate 100% of the vehicle cost (provided this does not push your total income below zero). Perhaps we should argue that TMS *is* a computer, only one with wheels?

Here is a link describing this, selected from random Google search results on "Bonus Depreciation 2012 vehicles". You can of course wade through the IRS tax docs themselves, which are a joy to read. There is much logic about whether EVs are subject to section 280F or not, and from what I read, I believe they are.
