Leave Occupants In Car with HVAC On (I can't do it)

Here's the situation, I pull up to the store to run in and grab a gallon of milk. My wife and kids are in the car. How can I leave them in the car and keep all the systems up and running, climate control, radio, etc..

I've tried turning off lock on walk away, doesn't work. I've tried leaving my phone in the car (not ideal) still doesn't work. It seems there is a seat sensor and if you close the door and someone's butt isn't in the driver's seat, everything shuts down.

I just want to be able to enable "something" so that it all stays on until my return. Any ideas?

On the Model S, I get out of the driver's seat and instead of slamming the drivers door, I partially close it so it isn't fully latched. My son stays in the car and everythings stays running...Haven't tried it on the 3 yet...

I was going to say why not just have your wife go sit in the driver's seat while you are inside? Is it because you're afraid you won't get her to get out of it when you get back- LOL!

More like afraid that she, and the car, won't be there when I get back

I like to leave HVAC on my dog in the same situation. It works on the Model S - I control it with the phone app.
The dog can't be depended upon to touch the screen when I'm not there.

I hear that putting peanut butter on the screen works great for this.

Does the old school camper mode work (bring the car to a stop and manually set the parking brake in the controls menu, which puts the car into neutral and keeps all systems running since it's not actually in park)?

On the S and X under recent firmware, you can open up the climate menu and at the bottom it'll now show a setting to keep the climate control on after turning off. I'm not sure if it's in current Model 3 firmware yet or not.

Can you, after out of range, turn on the climate/ac to 'pre-condition' the car as if you hadn't just been in it? Gonna ask the Tesla folks about this on Friday when we get ours!
