Maxed out Tesla M3 or 70D

I test drove and optioned out a 70D 2 weeks ago. The car was 83K before any tax credits. I liked the car a lot. However I'm thinking I would love a Tesla M3 PXXD (ludracris) model a lot more. Probably for the same price or maybe even less. Do I get the 70D now or wait? I've always liked the BMW M3. So to have a direct competitor made by Tesla (M3 PxxD) that will out perform it sounds awesome. BTW...the wife likes the 70D quite a bit, and she doesn't need the crazy speed.

for me, it's almost a tough question, except I'll likely prefer the slightly smaller size of the 3 maneuvering in and around my 1 car garage, and Boston....

and one would hope that a 70D configuration (if they can squeeze that much into a 3 chassis) would go ~20% further.

I had a 2014 BMW M3 convertible and was a little disappointed by the lack of power at low engine speeds. I replaced it with an Aston Martin roadster with basically the same horsepower (420) but with TONS of torque. This was SUCH an improvement over the M3. I then bought the S and sold the AM. I think your question is pretty much in line with what I'm thinking. I went for every option I wanted in the S85, but with a Model 3 I can REALLY afford to option that car and hopefully get the best battery pack option along with AP and Ludicrous or whatever mode they offer. Then my payment would be about half of what I'm paying now.

I'm pretty excited over this when my S lease comes up in a couple years!

You will be able to answer this question a lot better after Thursday night. I would wait until we see the Model 3 and hopefully get some information on speed and range. Also the Model 3 will be smaller and lighter, and might drive a little more like a Go-kart, which you might like more or less depending on personal taste.

If the size of the Model S works for you, and you can afford it, then I'd say get the Model S now. Not only will you get to enjoy driving a Tesla for the next two years, but existing Tesla owners are getting priority on ordering a Model 3 so it may get you a Model 3 sooner than you would get it otherwise. And when it gets close to order/delivery time for the Model 3, you could sell your Model S and use the cash for a pretty nicely optioned Model 3.

What I'd REALLY like is a Tesla even smaller than what the 3 supposedly is. I test drove a P85D and loved it, but that's a huge car for someone that's mostly driven smaller cars (old Jetta, Honda Civic and now Fit). The 3 should be closer to my wife's Optima, which for me will still feel big. Maybe when a Tesla Model C comes out my wife can have my 3 ;)

I'm driving a 70D on Thursday so I can see how the "slower" Tesla feels

The best thing to do is to put $1000 down on Thursday to reserve your place in the Model 3 queue. If you then decide on the 70D instead, the $1000 is transferable to the Model S.

Why is that the best thing and who is it best for? What could possibly happen during the M3 reveal that would make you say "Oh man! M3 will be so awesome that I don't want to drive a MS until then, instead I'm going to enjoy the wait more" ? On the other hand, if the price increase rumors come true, that may make the MS less affordable. What may make more fiscal sense to do is to put down a deposit on the Model S now, then hold off on confirming it until after the M3 reveal - at least in case prices go up you'll have your price locked-in for a week, and if you change your mind, you take your deposit back. IMHO.

According to the product specialist I talked to Saturday, price increase starts April 15 or mid April (can't remember) for model s. Didn't know how much but said I should order my s before the.

~1.5-2 years will be a painful wait ;-) The 70D is great, faster than most cars on the road, more than you really need, etc. The current MS is a great car, not perfect, and if you can live with that and not wait for the Model III or S redesign then you'll definitely enjoy it a long time...

Could work out as an ok deal if price jumps up in April to separate from Model III more. It'll be interesting to see if the Model III has supercharging included or even ideas that they could introduce a pay per use/amount model there to keep the price down at base. Most of us rarely use SCs anyway.

Will know Friday ;-). Heck may even cause a surge somewhat in Model S orders for those on the fence.
