Model 3 Software Updates

Thanks for that info. Come on Tesla, send it now! I wonder if they go in serial number order. if so, there are 5,000+ people ahead of me. I guess the better question is, How long does it take them to push an update out to everyone?.
With the S and X, the order is known only to Tesla, and it’s been different for different updates. Updates have been pushed out over days to weeks depending on how critical they are. Small batches allow a serious bug to be found before it would affect the whole fleet.

Received 2018.10.5 as well yesterday and drove it for about 8 miles to test Autopilot. Given that I don't have an S that has AP2, I can't make the comparison. But I do believe it has the newer improved Autopilot based on the smoother transition when changing lanes and more solid in staying in the lines. I also noticed that it does show a wider lane when presented.

I thought they had fixed the USB issue where it would not remember where you left off. When I got in the car to read the update notes, wasn't even aware that it was already playing the last song when I exited the car. Since almost 3 mos of owning the car, I can only remember about 3-4x where it would resume from where I left off when playing USB.

Rearranging the icons and adding rear heated seats was a nice edition. Wish I got the update the previous night as I could have tested over 200 mile trip but will get the chance on Thursday.

Anyone notice the backup camera seems *much* better? Widescreen now (can see audio controls under it), looks less blocky and less fisheye?
Definitely, and it doesn't overexpose the image anymore especially in sunlight. With the old software the entire image would be washed out white in bright daylight, especially with lighter concrete ground. But it has improved greatly so I can finally see out of the camera.

It seems like Tesla isn't going to push this update to my car until the weather gets warm and there will no longer be any need for the rear heated seats for a long time. But it's still cold for the next several days, so come on Tesla, push the update already! I have 3 bars on LTE every night.
Complain and ye shall receive. Got 2018.10.5 last night. I have rear seat heaters now!!

Not sure whether to post this here in Software Updates, or in First Drive Reviews, so I'll post it here:

My second time using AP was this morning with 2018.4.10. It was still a little bit freaky (I mean that I felt a little bit freaked) but definitely improved over 4.9. TACC still cannot handle when a car comes at me around a curve in the opposing lane. It thinks it needs to slow down. AP on the freeway (bright sunny day, dry road) is more steady in the lane than it was, and I like that. Places where there's no right-hand lane line because an on-ramp merges in or an off-ramp merges out, it thinks the lane is suddenly wider and tries to stay centered, resulting in moving way to the right and then back in when the lane markings are obvious again. Once I thought it was going to take me into an off ramp, but it did not. Overall, it stays centered better, but it not perfectly smooth. It's about as good in this respect as my mother, whose driving always made me carsick. Lane changing is much better than before.

The front louvers had been going opencloseopencloseopencloseopenclose, but did not do it this morning. Service had told me the log said something was caught in them, and I've been waiting for them to schedule someone to come look at it. I don't know if the software update fixed it, or if whatever was stuck in the louvers fell out.

I think the display of the time of day is a little bolder than it was. I'd like to have it on the left, where I can see it better, but this is still an improvement.

Things I noticed this AM post-update that have not been mentioned:
  • Auto Steer lane change is smoother. However, still needs improvement as it frequently fails to initiate the lane change.
  • Visual display of car ahead of you has some bugs. When a car is a good distance ahead of you the display shows the car in the lane to the left of me and bouncing back and forth between the lane next to me and my lane.
  • Visual display now shows red and yellow lines more predominantly to indicae close proximity to an obstacle.
  • Visual display now shows a car image when a motorcycle drives past you in-between lanes. It used only show the proximity lines.
  • New screen in the Climate Control settings shows the interior and allows you to tap on a seat (front or back) to turn on the seat heaters
  • Side mirrors stuck in reverse mode appears to be fixed. Will test again but I think this is resolved.
  • Back up camera is so much better! No longer dark or fish eyed.
  • "Hold Steering Wheel" alert is less sensitive. It used to force me to squeeze the steering wheel to maintain Auto Steer much more frequently.

On my short drive with several lane changes, it never failed to make the change. Of course this is very limited data.

I noticed the more prominent proximity lines, and I like that, except that it's usually because I'm next to a curb. Cars passing me on the left go through my "blind spot" without causing any proximity warnings. (I don't have much of a blind spot with correctly adjusted mirrors.)

What's "reverse mode" for side mirrors?

My backup camera seems unchanged. But I had no issues with it before. It is not linear. But if it was I don't see how it should show me a wide enough angle. I think it needs to be fish-eyed, so I can see off to the side. BTW, I really like the backup camera when I pull into my garage because the car barely fits, and the camera shows me when I've pulled in far enough that the door can close.

I don't think you're supposed to squeeze the steering wheel. I think it's looking for a slight resistance to being turned, not a squeezing pressure on the wheel. Holding the wheel lightly and allowing the weight of my arms to pull slightly seems to provide enough resistance to satisfy the car, both before and after this update.

Under side mirrors setting, you can toggle side mirror to auto tilt when you put car in reverse. Which is also adjustable and saved for each driver profile.

The steering is looking for torque (slight weight or tug on the wheel) No squeeze sensor.

It was pointed out to me in another thread that I've been writing the version number wrong. This should have been 2018.10.5. But I cannot edit the post now.

Stupid confusing version numbers!

Ah! Thanks for that info.

Yes, that's what I thought. clmason seemed to be talking about squeezing it.

There used to be some theory that creeping around a service center would trigger an update, but I think that was either debunked or stopped working.

That did actually work at one point, I used that trick to get 3 or 4 firmware updates pushed to my Model S on demand. However, Tesla changed the server-side code such that the update is now only pushed if there is an open service ticket for the car. This lets them update the software easily on each car that comes in for service (the server pushed the update and all the techs have to do is install it), but prevents just anyone from getting the software by driving near the service center.

I was disappointed to find out at delivery today the new software did not come pre-loaded. The Delivery Specialist somewhat implied that Tesla is obligated to deliver the cars with the original software and that I should look for the update soon.
