OMG, this just confirms the fears among some that the display mount is so spindly and fragile that it'll snap if you look at it the wrong way! They weren't trying to hide the steering wheel... just the display, as they've done on several previous occasions. If the garment was just draped over the display, its weight would have caused the display to snap off. By also draping it over the steering wheel, much of the weight is transferred to it rather than to the display, thus protecting the integrity of the latter. :)

Looks like a jacket...

You are most certainly and surely correct my friend, the heavy burden of said jacket would undoubtedly snap the display mount clean in half, and once finished with said mount, would likely continue it's downward tragectory to cleave through and rend asunder the cars very chassis itself!

What if there's small display on the wheel, sort of quick touch panel control for the autopilot mode. One quick button to drive home, one to office, etc. Maybe display basic info while autopiloting around.
Yes, and with shrapnels of tempered glass ripping through your torso when the quick screen explodes following airbag deployment

It would be incredibly awkward to try to focus on a small display on the steering wheel that is that much below your normal line of sight and so close to your body. It would probably take the average driver a second or two to be able to refocus their eyes on it after looking out of the windshield.
