I dropped off our Model 3 today to have the suspension swap performed. The parts to perform the swap were actually ordered about a month ago but due to a miscommunication ended up at the wrong service center. They eventually made it to the correct one and today was the appointment to make the swap.

However, it turns out the reason they paused the suspension swap in the first place was because of an issue with the replacement front struts. Apparently there's already a replacement part out for those, they just need to source it for me.

It wasn't clarified to me what the issue was, how it affects those who had already had the suspension swap performed, or vehicles delivered with that part.

I'll find out more when they follow up tomorrow afternoon.

I'm pretty sure we covered PSI levels somewhere in this thread. The owners manual was updated today and in case anyone hasn't seen the relevant PSI warnings I'm putting a copy here

Interesting. I am booked to get mine done Friday. Will see of they tell me the same thing. Did they do any work, or just tell you to come back when the front struts are in?

They did at least most of the work. I’m unsure if they switched the front struts to the revision they couldn’t release to me or not.

He made it sound like they did switch it but then verifying found out they couldn’t release the car. So they still have possession of the car. I’m hoping they’re able to source the part quickly.

Contact HQ...they have more insight about this

I hate to post something that was apparently answered, but if somebody has contacted HQ and gotten something more specific, I'd like to know what it is, even if it means getting on a list for an eventual email. I spoke to service today and they had no idea what it was, even when I mentioned that there was a bulletin, there was a 12/27 cutoff, etc.

They actually called me about setting up an appointment for a valve issue so I asked while I had them on the phone. The person I spoke to found something and said that there were some things they could do about the ride, but he didn't find the specific bulletin. Since they need to call me back to set up a mobile appointment, I can ask whoever I speak to, but anything more specific that I can say, aside from "there's a bulletin" would help.

I took mine to Service Center last Friday (Mar 30) as they wanted a test drive to see if I really needed the softer hardware. About 30 seconds in they were convinced that I did. They said that they would order the parts and let me know when ready. They also mentioned that the "Parts are in Pomona" so just about 50 miles away but I have not heard anything about scheduling a replacement yet. Hopefully soon.

Got the car back today. It's night and day with the suspension, although I think the original suspension settled / changed over time.

I feel like it's more like the spring suspension of older Model S (I had an 85 loaner from November 2014).

I didn't really find out more about the hold, though. Just a new part. I also couldn't get them to push 2018.12. They made it sound like the car had to be approved for that, which I take to mean that it's still beta / insider program.

Hey not to derail the thread or anything- but that's from the owners manual and it shows 3 different tires available for the factory 18s, including PS4s... I thought they were only offering the craptacular all-season MXM4s? Did I miss something where you can actually pick summer performance tires when invited to configure now? Because that'd be awesome and save me finding someone wanting barely-used MXM4s

I'm assuming they put it in the owners manual because you can buy sets of wheels + tires or just replacement tires from the website or your local service center. So even if it comes with the MXM4s you could buy a set of the others and have them swapped seasonally (running summer tires + all seasons, or all seasons + winter tires, or summer tires + winter tires) or for trips (run 19" or 20" around town and put 18" on for vacations or other long trips).

The configurator doesn't currently let you buy 20" wheels + tires but it's in the manual as well. Presumably when production is full out the configurator will offer more options.

Until then if you want different tires hit up your service center or bug your delivery specialist and see what they say.

Worst case if you don't like the MXM4s just prepare to sell them while they have new tread and buy what you like.

So good to hear they had a major improvement in this area...there was a lot of concern when the first cars came out that this will be a deal breaker for many, since so many complained. Is there anything left out of the original "sporty" feel? Or it is not sporty anymore?

I think it still feels sporty, at more so than my S with air suspension. My S feels boaty with a roll. The 3 is still tight but the bumps are much more cushioned.

Before the swap, driving on terrible roads in west LA / 405 would feel like rattling. Now that’s absorbed but not as much as a current S air suspension.

Can I ask, was the suspension swap all you had done and, if so, how long did they have your car?

Yeah, it was the only thing done. I asked and the work itself takes about 6 hours, but sometimes the techs have to switch around.

Also, it took a day and a half to source the other struts. This, they had the car from Wednesday morning until Friday early afternoon.
