So....after stalking the forum for the last couple months, I am writing my first post to share that I took the plunge on a CPO (first Tesla at all), and wanted to share some notes after about 10 days in.

Pulling the trigger on a CPO was more difficult than I thought, just due to the speed that they seemed to be going. I had reached out for "more information about this vehicle" about 8 times over 2 months and never got a single call back from an SA (even tried having my local SC check in with them, but nothing). Then in the last week of August I got a call from Travis out of Chicago who was very helpful...even though several of the vehicles I was interested in were no longer available, he helped me narrow down the search and found a few models.

Of course when trying to put a deposit on one, was getting the 'error' and then it was gone the next morning...this routine happened 3 more times - and after emailing Travis with some frustration, he found two that fit the criteria, so I jumped on the phone with him and actually made the deposit:

2015 Model S 85D -
Dual Motor All Wheel Drive -
Midnight Silver Metallic Paint -
All Glass Panoramic Roof -
19" Wheels -
Black Leather Seats -
Piano Black Décor -
Supercharger Enabled -
Autopilot Hardware 1 -
Premium Sound
26,xxx Miles
$57k

It is quite the feeling when you actually hear/see that phrase - "Welcome to Tesla"...nearly two weeks later and I am still geeked!

We talked about a 6 week timeframe, but since the vehicle is in CA and I am in St. Louis, I wanted to avoid the extra delivery charge and am going to pick it up in Tempe and road trip back (very much looking forward to this!).

Since then have had most of the 'frustrations' of everyone else that finds the lack of communication a challenge - but that seems typical of what you get when going the CPO route.

One interesting note - since making the deposit on 9/2, I have completed all the information in MyTesla, and gotten my financing squared away within the first couple days...but then several days later got an email saying: Reminder: Let's Complete Your Order - that there were tasks yet to be completed in MyTesla. I reached out to Travis right away fearing I was holding something up in the process (god forbid any extra delay!), and he called back fairly quickly stating to 'ignore most of those auto emails you get'; and he also mentioned they were trying out a new process for the end of the quarter that he (my SA) would handle all of the transaction, and the DS would just be there to hand off in Tempe. Not sure if anyone else has heard this or if this is just random? Thought perhaps this meant Tesla was going to make a push to deliver more CPO before the end of Q3 and I might get a nice surprise - but when I emailed Travis he assured me it wouldn't be sooner than early Oct. Still haven't seen any pics (after multiple requests) due to the vehicle undergoing cosmetic reconditioning this week, but do have my MVPA at least.

Happy to share updates as the process goes on...and would love to hear other stories on delivery/pickup road-trips back home as your first drive!

Thanks to everyone for the advice/thoughts etc....the anticipation & excitement is hard to keep at bay sometimes!

5/1981 - Ever since I was born I wanted a Tesla
08/29 - Applied for Tesla Finance to see what rate I would qualify for
8/29 - Same day response - got a call from SA asking what Car I wanted. I told him the most I was willing to spend and gave the specifics of what I wanted - he found a car that was sort of close and used that as a benchmark
8/30 - got a rate from finance for 2.24% with loan amount up to $48,8000. Perfect
8/30 - 9/2 - SA sent me links to CPOs, many that weren't listed on the website
9/3 - reserved a 2014 Tesla S60 - Pearl White, $37k miles, Black Performance Seats, Carbon Fiber Decor, UHFS, SAS, 19 Inch Cyclone Wheels, Panoramic Roof.
9/3 - got the automated emails, email from sales rep, completed the tasks on the My Tesla site
9/3 - SA calls 30 minutes later and congratulates me on my purchase. Email says 3-4 weeks for delivery but he guesstimates 1-2 weeks since it's local and doesn't have that much work needed
9/4 - waiting...
9/6 - got a text from my CPO advisor letting me know that there is no reconditioning needed according to the Quality Manager. Should be ready for pickup in Burbank, CA next week!
9/8 - Got a call from DS and car will be ready for pickup on Wednesday next week in Burbank! That was pretty quick! Great news is that it comes with LTE so that saves my $500 :)
9/9 - Got an email from the DS telling me what to bring, final amount due, license, etc
9/13 - Tesla picked up at 11:00AM scheduled appointment
  • Greeted by DS and they took a picture of me with the car to celebrate
  • Went through some paperwork, mostly DMV stuff
  • Did a walk through of the car and noticed a scratch at the rear bumper, paint chipped on the rear passenger door. Fixed really quickly with some touch up paint by the detailers
  • Walked through the features, home link, charging, radio, etc
  • Noticed the battery was at 192 miles at 98% charge. Degradation not too bad considering there are 45k miles on this S60. Sort of makes me wish I splurged a little for the S85 but no biggie... superchargers everywhere anyway
  • Went to the service department and asked about any replacements, DU, next scheduled service... They said all good, don't have to come back at 50k since it was already all done when it was brought in from previous owner. Service dude was super cool and patient
  • Was out of there at 12:30
  • Overall a pretty good experience. I watched how the staff handled other customers and they were all really nice.

Wow that looks like a great deal and the Tempe crew are great to deal with. Plus you get a nice road trip out of it..

In fact any service center is great to deal with. The guys at Cactus tint noticed my door panel wasn't perfectly snug against the door and wanted to let me know. As soon as I picked it they suggested I hit the SC just around the corner. The SC mentioned one of the push pins was bad and would install immediately and gave me a few ultimate wash vouchers as well for the inconvenience which I'll use on the jeep,, no way the car is going through a brush wash ;-)

Great pick up. I put my deposit down on the 6th of September. You got a great deal. I'm in CA and the Car was also in CA. My CPO Advisor has been great, even after my deposit, but it's only been a week, so we'll see....

Thanks! Haven't spoken to anyone out of Tempe yet, but will keep you posted.
I'm really looking forward to spending a little time in AZ. I'm a huge FLW fan, so want to go see Taliesin for sure...then going to spend a night in Sedona and do a little hiking before starting the trek back to Missouri.

Another update - I just got the auto email "Paying for your Tesla" today...not sure what triggers this, but hoping it means some progress.

Thought I would share an update with everyone.....just got a call from my SA Travis, he said the Rocklin SC was done with the inspection and the 'cosmetic reconditioning' and they were looking to put it on a truck this Thursday! Should be in Tempe early next week and I can take delivery late next week! That would be nearly 2 weeks ahead of the original estimates, and if I can get it on the 30th would be under one month from my initial deposit on 9/2.

Not sure if they are really making a push to have things delivered by the end of the quarter, but either way I'll take it!!
Seems like it all might be coming together....

Here's my CPO purchase experience thus far.

8/1/2017 Put down a deposit. The car is located in SoCal and needs to be delivered to Norcal for reconditioning. I am told up front the estimated time for delivery is up to 10 weeks out.

8/14/2017 I email sales advisor for a status update.

8/21/2017 I follow up with another email and call.

8/21/2017 Receive response. Sales advisor was sick. No updates at this time.

8/28/2017 Request update and photos.

8/29/2017 Receive response that there's a delay for getting a truck to pickup the car to send to delivery destination.

9/6/2017 Request update. Sales advisor is out for training.

9/8/2017 Call in for an update. There are no updates at this time, and the car is still in SoCal waiting for pickup.

9/15/2017 Up to this point, I've initiated all communications with Tesla. This is the 1st delivery update call/email initiated by Tesla--the car was not picked up after 3 missed attempts. Tesla will try to pick up this week and accelerate the refurbishment.

9/20/2017 Request update.

9/21/2017 Vehicle has arrived at destination and is undergoing inspection and reconditioning.

I will keep this post updated.

I'll add my data. Overall, pleased with the experience and a month from start to when my car was ready:

7/28 - Pulled trigger on a CPO 2012 P85 (as detailed here - Buying CPO with accident history)
7/29 - Received call going over car and process. Asked which SoCal delivery center I preferred and chose Buena Park.
8/1 - Call from SA telling me he was assigned to the vehicle. Asked him to look into other cars as I had cold feet. Back and forth went on for a few days.
8/14 - SA emailed that car arrived at Buena Park and start of the reconditioning process. Corresponded over the next week answering my questions.
9/1 - SA updated that car was done and ready for delivery.
9/2 - Email from delivery specialist offering delivery times.
9/26 - Finally, picked up car. Delay on part due to work and family schedule. I saw (waiting for an email copy) the inspection and refurb bill and it was pretty extensive with around 40 some items including paint, upholstery, new brakes, tires, etc. They also conveniently forgot to charge me $2k delivery fee. I'm not complaining as the car looks and runs great. Even came with paint protection on the front from the previous owner.

Happy to be part of the Telsa family and would buy CPO again without hesitation.

Overall, the car was worth the wait, and the delivery experience at the end was professional.

My CPO experience and time-line (all in one post)

7/8/2017: Setup a test drive appointment online.

7/18: Showed up for my test drive, we took a new inventory S-90D out for a ride. The staff was very helpful and gave me the card of their dedicated on-site CPO advisor (he wasn't working that day).

7/21: I emailed the CPO advisor with some questions about a specific vehicle I found on ev-cpo.com. I got a reply the same day with answer to my question, a carfax report, and other info about that vehicle. I emailed my search criteria (my "must"s and "nice to have"s) as the advisor suggested that he could do an internal search for what I was looking.

7/22: I got a reply with an even better match than I had found and at a lower price than anything comparable. I ordered it within the hour because I knew it was such an good fit (S-85D with AP1 and low mileage) it wouldn't last. The car he found didn't show up in my searches either on Tesla.com or ev-cpo.com so either he added it right then or somehow those tools missed it. It was $5K less than anything comparable. I got an automated email from the Delivery Specialist welcoming me and telling me to fill out my info in mytesla.

7/23: I was considering trading in my existing car so I put in the info to see what tesla's offer would be. I applied for the loan because I wanted to see what rate I would get (if it was low enough I'd take it otherwise just pay in cash). Tesla isn't licensed to do loans in my state (or something like that) so the request was outsourced to some random credit union. The credit union offered me a horrible rate (actually, it was so high it was rather insulting) so I declined and changed to cash on mytesla.

7/25: I had a phone conversation with the CPO advisor, he answered my questions and asked me to take a bunch of specific pictures of my trade in. One response I wasn't expecting was that CPO cars simply sit at at the service center where they originated and no effort is really made to assess or repair until someone buys it. My car was "in region" so no transport fee but at a different center than I would get it from. His best guess was delivery in "4-6 weeks".

7/26: I cleaned up my trade-in, took the best pictures I could and emailed them to the CPO advisor, he put them in their system and said I would get an offer in a few days.

7/29: I got another automated email from the Delivery Specialist reminding me to fill out my info in mytesla (I already had).

8/2: I called the Delivery Specialist to see what was happening with my car and my trade (the usual questions like: "Dude, where's my car?"). He said it was still sitting at the original service center waiting for transport so he had no idea the condition or what needed fixing (this is now 12 days after I ordered it). Delivery Specialist emailed me a final offer for my trade and I was somewhat disappointed because the offer was done sight unseen (besides my pictures), with no test drive, and no inspection. The price reflected that, i.e. it was rather low.

8/6: I emailed the Delivery Specialist saying I was going to decline the trade offer and sell it myself. He said it was removed from my account but would still show up in mytesla because mytesla doesn't handle that condition.

8/14: After about 2 weeks since my last status, I fired off an email to the Delivery Specialist looking for an update. I got a reply saying my car was getting repaired and it should be ready within 7-10 days.

8/21: Called for status, car was at the body shop, other parts were at the service center waiting for return from body shop.

8/31: Called for status, still at body shop.

9/6: Called for status, still at body shop.

9/7: Car is ready! Scheduled orientation for 9/11 and delivery on 9/12.

9/9: Sold my old car for almost double what Tesla offered for it as a trade-in. My hunch about the low-ball trade offer were right on, If I had more time, I could have probably gotten 2.5x their trade offer in a private sale, but given I wanted to get it sold fast I settled for 1.9x with a buyer.

9/11: I visited the Service Center for orientation. I got a chance to look over the vehicle and ask questions, however the delivery bay was very poorly lit and I couldn't really inspect the interior for issues. I asked for a list of the repairs done, but they said they don't give those out. It was scheduled to get picked up by the delivery guy a few hours later so I took the obligatory photos of it in the delivery bay and headed home.

9/12: Car was delivered to my house! Arrived in a full-sized enclosed transport truck. The delivery guy couldn't park right at my house with his big 18-wheeler, but parked on a side street and drove my Model S from there to my driveway. A quick look around for obvious damage and we were all set.

9/14: Over the 1st 48 hours I noticed 4 minor issues, items I couldn't really get a chance to see/inspect at the orientation because of the poor lighting and we didn't take a test drive. Specifically, 1) the center console tray wasn't fully attached to the dash, 2) one of the floor mats were missing all of its Velcro pads and just sliding around, 3) one of the seat belts was twisted and installed backwards, and 4) the UMC was in horrible beat up condition (clearly run over many times and stretched). I emailed the delivery specialist a list of issues saying I was disappointed and they should have been fixed prior to delivery.

9/19: Followed up email with a call and delivery specialist apologized for the issues and said he would have one of the service techs call me.

9/22: No call from service team, so called in again

9/25: Still no callback from service team, called service team directly scheduled appt for 10/3 to address the issues.

10/3: Drove to service center for appt, they fixed 3 of the 4 problems I found (free of charge) in about 90 minutes. They said the UMC was fine so no replacement needed.

Could have been faster and better experience, but worked out in the end.

It took just under three weeks for from deposit date to delivery, most likely because my CPO was 2016 and already in Fremont. Not much refurbishment required. I suspect the time period would've been even shorter had it not been transported across the country. The CPO advisor reached out right away, then dropped off/was incommunicado. But my Delivery Specialist was great/super-responsive once engaged and Customer Experience Specialist made the delivery seamless. Only some very minor items for the due bill. Really happy with the driving experience thus far!

Just gonna add my two cents from the Seattle area.

June 8 - placed order. Told it was 8 weeks delivery time.
June 12 - asked question about reconditioning, no response
July 5 - bumped the email thread, got same day "will get back to you" response
July 16 - response saying 1-2 week delay
Aug 8 - bumped the email thread, got same day "will get back to you" response with no response
Aug 15 - got a call car was ready
Aug 19 - picked up car

Kind of par for the course.

My CPO experience was not great, but not a nightmare either. Communication is almost non-existent, I had to pry out every bit of simple information. We finally took delivery of our CPO 9 (almost 10) weeks from our deposit date. It was not the worse CPO I have seen but definitely not one of the nicer ones, which is sad considering the car is relativity low mileage and mid 2014 production. Multiple stains on the headliner, stains on the leather seats and trim, grime on multiple pieces of the interior, the rear seats had pretty good wear and was not taken care of but within limits I was told. A panel on the car was re-painted but done poorly, you can see the color matching is not the best but not totally obvious either. There was paint over-spray all over the exterior of the car that had to be detailed out (it was clear that they just washed it and did a quick "clean"). Various noises coming from multiples areas of the car that had to be addressed in follow up service visits. Several other issues that required fixing or replacing of parts. I should have just declined the car but for various reasons I did not. I accepted it knowing I was not content with it but I knew and hoped that Tesla would address all the issues (which they have for the most part). Thankfully I don't live too far from a service center so I can drop it off as needed.

Overall I am very dissatisfied with my CPO and plan and getting rid of it in a year or so. I still love Tesla and I love the Model S, and I plan to purchase another one. Unfortunately I did not have a good CPO experience nor did I get a great CPO Model S, as many others have. I knew going in that this was a possibility as I have read this and many other threads of CPO experiences, but I had hoped I would not be one of those. I'm not writing this to rip into Tesla or discourage anyone but it is my experience thus far with the CPO process and car. I have addressed some of the interior issues myself (they could have easily had they done a proper CPO recert process) and Tesla has fixed most of the other issues through service visits. The car has developed new issues that are being addressed. I would never buy a Tesla out of warranty or keep it out of warranty for long, that is for sure.

Sept 19th- Put down deposit online, on a 2014 P85 located in CA.
Sept 22nd- Used online tool to message about not hearing from anyone and someone called back that day, was told 4-6 weeks.
Oct 3rd- Car had been transferred to CO.
Oct 17th- Finished all but paint refinishing and bodywork. It got a new windshield and 4 new tires.
Oct 27th- Finished getting paint and bodywork.
Nov 1st- Scheduled delivery day!!! Almost 6 weeks to the day from deposit.

2013: first time I rode in a Tesla. Knew right then I wanted one... badly
11/7 Noticed a sweet deal on a 2015 70D MS and asks to be contacted
11/8 7am Get contacted back by an advisor, car is long gone. Asks me what I'm looking car. I answer with my wish list.
11/8 4pm Get contacted again by advisor with a match. After a nice phone call during which he answered all my questions, I put down my $1000 on a 2014 MS 85 with AP1. Apparently, I'm lucky and it should be a 3-4 weeks wait. Let's see how the rest goes.

Hey guys.

Waited on the Model 3 FOREVER.....and got disappointed when First Production slipped (I know, I know, "Elon time....."). I've decided to make this a positive experience. I decided to get a CPO S 85 w/AP1. (It's a "unicorn". Green was discontinued like a month after AP).

Here are my data points so far:
11/1 - 6pm. That brutal Q3 conference call...delays, etc.
11/2- GOP Tax plan draft w/the death of the EV tax Credit is published.
11/2 - evening- I decide to defer my Model 3 res until Performance is available, but I realize my Audi's trade-in value will likely plummet over the next year (2015, 40K miles).
11/3 - morning- scheduled a test drive of a new Model S.
11/2- 11/5- constant refresh of tesla.com and ev-cpo
11/5 -1pm. Took a test drive of a new 100D at Tesla Natick. The sales associate showed me what they had in inventory, which was more than I could find on Tesla.com or ev-cpo. He informed me that they have even more on the CPO Advisors' version of the page. Come to find out my regional guy is on PTIO until next Tuesday (11/14)
11/5 - evening- 2 Model S's appear online, a brown P85 w/AP1, and the Green 85 w/AP1. I hit "request callback" on both.
11/6- NOTHING.
11/7 - The regional CPO advisor for the VA area calls me, since New England and New York's advisors are on PTO. We discuss both vehicles and what I'm looking for. My wife and I compare, and I decide to put my $ on the Green 85. I get the Thank You email immediately. And MyTesla account immediately shows the vehicle. While I'm in there, I move my Model 3 preference to "Dual Motor".
11/8- the VA CPO-A I talked to calls me, gets me started w/paperwork and questions about my trade. I get back the estimated (lowball.....) trade estimate. (I may go 3rd party here.) I'm told to expect 3-5 weeks.
11/9 - now- I'm typing this and I want my car!!!!

:(

wow you guys keep detailed records.

i think i bought mine about Nov 1, or reserved it, or agreed to it.
i finished all my "tasks" in 3 days.
my C3PO has been pretty good about communication, she usually answers me three days from when i send something, it's like we're first dating or something, doesn't want to come on too strong i guess.
i was told six weeks, i expect that, or more.
mine is a 2013 with 59K miles so it probably needs some CPO TLC pretty BAD.
