Australian government to replace the current fleet of 92 BMW 5 series diesel and 45 Camry Hybrid with with a mix of BMW iX SUVs (both the 40 and 50 variant)

Other vehicles considered but not chosen included the BMW iX3, Polestar 2, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, Kia EV6, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Replacement wil begin shortly and take about 12 months to replace all vehicles. These Govt vehicles are typically on a 3-yr lease.

Big win for BMW given it seems they've only sold 255 iXs in the first four months of this year, so this equates to almost two months of sales.

It's just a shame they didn't spread the order around, though I suspect Pollies used to complain bitterly when they got the 'cheaper' Camry in the current fleet.
It makes sense to have all the same model for parts, training, tyres etc, and ultimately they should work out the best option for their needs and buy that. Buying something that meets less of their needs to spread around an overseas purchase doesn’t really make a lot of sense. If they were local builds then maybe.

Also, presumably these will use a large, shared pool of private destination chargers at Parliament House (and probably other locations). There's probably a sensible reason to use all the same brand of EV so that all the cars have the charge port in the same location. I imagine these would be units with tethered Type 2 cables and will a consistent fleet, they could comfortably only have 3m cables.

The article outlines that charging stations will be at each state depot, and its unknown if parliament house will recieve any

Considering how many MPs commute from Sydney, and other nearby locations like Goulburn, Wollongong etc. at the beginning and end of sitting weeks, it'd be insane not to. Not to mention the constant trips to Queanbeyan (a nearby marginal seat) for announcements and other photo ops!
