Cascade Loop Electrified - well all most...

We finished the Travel Writer Tour to demonstrate that the Cascade Loop Scenic Drive was drivable in a Nissan Leaf. The weak segment is Newhalem. Seattle City Light has L2 EVSE units on order and has completed the permits and planning to bring power under Highway 20 to the visitor parking area. Because we needed the charging for the writer tour, Plug-In NCW loaned two haL2 EVSE units to SCL for temporary installation. They did an outstanding installation that looks so good that we joked that they should just open it to the public. One resident SCL employee was quite interested in the Model S so I let him drive mine. He asked if we could drive by his house on the SCL compound so his wife could see it. I countered with, let me get my Tesla jacket on. So when we got to his house I rang the doorbell, she answered and I said, "Good morning, I'm Jack Anderson a Tesla delivery specialist and I would like to introduce you to your new car..." You can imagine the scene after that statement!

Seattle City Light is anticipating that their EVSE units will be installed by early December. So, next Spring when Highway 20 opens it is highly likely that there will be four L2 charging opportunities in Newhalem. SCL has not determined their rate for use as of today. Plug-In has offered to review their plans and provide input.

See you on the Loop. Jack

Highway 2 Eastward Advance

Plug-In North Central Washington has been working on a Waterville host site for more than a year. It is now coming together. The land use agreement, tenant improvements and transformer replacement are in progress. As most of you know Highway 2 is electrified Wenatchee to Everett. The sad part is this excellent EV route ends in Wenatchee. With the addition of Waterville the trip to Spokane will be 30 miles closer to electrification. What is needed now is a group of EV drivers and interested persons to find a host in Spokane for an haL2 (240V80A) charger. Any Spokanites up for this challenge? Plug-In North Central Washington will have Waterville, Coulee City and Davenport sites operational before you get one haL2 established in Spokane.

Standard L2 does not count, the unit must be a minimum of 70A delivery at 240 volts.

Waterville Installation Nears Validation

After Friday the 31st of October something more than ghost and goblins began appearing in Waterville! Plug-In North Central Washington and the Highway 2 Brew celebrated the day by starting the installation of an haL2 EVSE unit. This location is a first step in making Highway 2 between Spokane and Wenatchee ready for EV80 travel. Highway 2 Brew is in a wonderful location that serves great coffee, sandwiches and has a gazebo in a grass "mini park" to enjoy them in. It is also within a short walk of the Douglas County Museum, a beautiful city park and the main street shopping area.

Plug-In NCW is out "Trick or Treating" for additional donations to purchase two more chargers for locations further east on Highway 2. Your donation is tax deductible and 100% of it will be used to purchase EVSE, signage and electrical power monitors. If you contribute the full price of a unit ($2,200) we will gladly place a Patron Dedication plaque on the unit with your choice of message.

Colfax?

Jack, is Colfax on "the list" for a L2 charger?. I know Colfax is not considered part of the north region, but I travel there at least once a year for photography. I've talked with the folks at the BW Wheatland Inn in Colfax and they indicated the local CofC/tourism group was less than enthusiastic regarding hosting a charger. Thanks.

Colfax/Pullman area is very much like the challenge Plug-In NCW faced with Newhalem on Highway 20. Seattle City Light did not see any value in hosting haL2 at Newhalem because in their view there was, "nowhere to go after than." They termed it in this way, they did not want "stranded assets" which made sense to me. We placed haL2 every 40 miles from Washington Pass eastward to Pateros and now Seattle City Light is installing EVSE. I am of the opinion that Plug-In NCW needs to broaden it's reach and become involved in state wide efforts to create charging opportunities along all highways and major county arterial roads. In the early 1900s as ICE automobiles were becoming available many scoffed at the idea of wide spread availability of gasoline. Today this same attitude is present, "..what, are they going to put chargers all over the state?" Yes, that is my intention. http://www.pluginncw.com

Thank you again for your efforts Jack!

The lack of foresight is staggering. Isn't there a state University in Pullman? I mean, can't anyone there see that EV's will soon be littering their lots with all the students and professors there? On that thought, I'm surprised there aren't already a couple EV's in the area. Maybe if you tell them that Tesla is planning to put a Supercharger in the Lewiston/Clarkston area they will see some benefit to, in a way, tying into that network. Sheesh!

Two New haL2 Charging Opportunities

First, Plug-In North Central Washington in partnership with the Mellisoni Winery has installed a 70A 240V haL2 charging station to promote “Agritouismo EV”. The Mellisoni offers food as well as a tasteful selection of wines produced on site. You will be enthralled with the view of Lake Chelan and the Cascades while enjoying the outdoor patio and lawn. In addition to the haL2 station there are 120V 15A and 240V40A outlets to provide charging opportunities while visiting. Check both of our new locations out on PlugShare, CarStations, or OpenCharge APPS or the Tesla Highway web-site.

Second: Plug-In North Central Washington in partnership with the Highway 2 Brew has installed a 70A 240V charging opportunity in Waterville. This unique site offers espresso coffee, sandwiches and a picnic gazebo all within walking distance of parks, museums bakeries and main street shopping. This EVSE in Waterville is situated at the top of a six mile 1,879 foot east bound climb from Orondo so EV80 drivers will have some “assurance” that Coulee City is reachable. In addition to the haL2 station there are 120V 15A and 240V 40A outlets installed. Waterville was the very first site Plug-In North Central Washington determined to place a charger in during 2013 when we started this project. Some times the best just takes longer! We are scouting locations in Coulee City and Davenport now. When completed we will have established EV80 travel for Highway 2 Everett to Spokane, Highway 97 Wenatchee to Osoyoos, BC and Highway 20 Mazama to Pateros. For more details and information on what we are up to check http://www.pluginncw.com Our host association offers free charging but you can always donate.

Scouting for Host in Coulee City and Davenport on Highway 2

Randy Brooks and I spend the MLK Holiday in Coulee City, Washington looking at potential host sites for an haL2 80A charger. We have an operational haL2 70A at Waterville on Highway 2 so when we are successful in Coulee City we will be close to achieving an EV80 route from Everett to Spokane.

Do you know anyone in Coulee City or Davenport, Washington? We need some leads.

Jack, any word on the progress of Seattle City Light installing a high-amp charge station at Newhalem?

This is what I know from those on the ground an Newhalem. There will be two haL2 and L2 chargers installed in the gravel visitor's lot across the highway from the Newhalem Store and Visitor's Center. The timeline has slipped continuously since last summer. Plug-In NCW will assist Seattle City Light in celebrating the opening and organize some EVents. As you may know Plug-In NCW installed two haL2 (70A) units there last September to support the Cascade Loop EV Writers Tour. I went up and removed them a week later. My estimate is that we will be celebrating these charging opportunities early this Spring.

First i I wanted to second the thanks for your diligent efforts here Jack et al, it's great to see these haL2s go up. I'm not caught up on all this thread, though any way to help / donate?

Second, with the snow on the pass (and the prerequisite anti-freeze and salt), can we make this late spring and hopefully get some more from the west side to come over? I come over pretty frequently, as we have a place on this side, though would prefer not bringing over new S at the moment ;-)

thanks, Mike

Mike, thanks for the good vibes! If you go to the very first post in this thread I listed our 501 (c) 3 status and mailing address. So, yes, you can donate and we can provide a federal tax compliant receipt. Also many employers will match. Seattle City Light will set the date for the opening, but I will for sure be encouraging them to wait until the North Cascade Highway is open. We will be working to gather as many EVs as possible from western and eastern Washington. May plan a BBQ in Winthrop to be kind of an add on target of opportunity.

We finally caught a day of 40 degrees so I washed about two pounds of road grime off our Model S.
