Phone as Key Issues

That's exactly why the phone key is terrible, the iPhone BT range is too good. I don't want my car waking up, let alone unlocking, when I'm walking *near* my garage... only when I'm walking up to it *in* my garage.

For me that's what it does. It has nothing to do with bluetooth range. My phone connects as a key from 50 feet away, but only unlocks the car when I enter the garage.

what is this "force quit" on a mobile device? what os? where do you initiate the mobile equivalent of alt-f4 / end task ?
On iOS that usually means bringing up the multitasker ans swiping away the tabs. On Android you have to go into the programs/apps in settings and Force Stop an app that is running (but not open). I left my Oreo Android device at home so I am running off poor memory for that explanation.

so far, in 4 days of interacting with my car... on 50.13, samsung S7edge. only my phone is connected
90% consistent.

once i had to do the bluetooth reset
a couple of times, it unlocked, but then once i got in the car, it wouldn't let me drive for a minute.. i had seat belt latched. it gave me the "tap keycard on cupholder" prompt. i took the phone out of my pocket, then it worked both times.

maybe 25% of the time, i have to wait 30 sec, then it unlocks.

the rest of the time, it works great.

i don't know if this has been discussed:

if i have both tesla's in the garage, and both cars are bluetooth linked to my phone... can these phones link to 2 bluetooth devices at the same time? will my cars compete for my phone? will this cause a potential problem trying to unlock my 3 if it's connected to my S?

It only connects to the “active” car in your tesla app. So if the S was last active in the app, it would not connect to the 3 as a key. If you had 2 3’s presumably, it will only unlock the last one that was active in the app.

S70D owner, M3 picked up late Dec. Started out with 2 card keys and 1 phone working as a key, later got the 2nd phone working. Actually both phones working maybe half the time on average, card key or unlock button on app as backup. Last few weeks, wifes phone stopped working as a key. Then both card keys stopped working completely from the B pillar, but both continued to work to start the car behind the cup holder as necessary. But could always push unlock on the phone app. Road trip last weekend, rolled the dice, I wanted to take the 3, the range is great and I don't get to drive it much since we haven't received the carpool stickers yet for my commute. After trip started, phone as key would rarely work from my phone. Then could no longer connect to the model 3 from the app on wifes phone. Just stopped working, could get to model S. Then came back to the parked car from a stop and after some time trying, oops, my phone battery went dead before I could connect, I think the cell reception is bad where the car is. Tried card keys, played with, reinstalled app and relogged in on wifes phone, still can't unlock car. Had to find a store that would let me plug into their charger for a while, finally got on app and pushed the unlock button. Set the car to not lock on walkaway, kept the car unlocked for the rest of the trip.

Took the car to Costa Mesa service for this and other issues first thing Monday. Said they would have it for several days, replacing the front drivers seat and a bunch of expensive sounding charging hardware also. I don't mind any of this, they gave me a nice S75 loaner (first one with carpool stickers as I suggested to them starting years ago!). Knew what I signed up for, I have confidence it will all get worked out.

My 2 cents worth:
At delivery on Feb. 8th they worked for about 1 hour trying to get my phone to do what they said it should do. Seeing the trouble they had I asked for an extra 2 key cards, which they had to order. Eventually they got the phone to work at the service center, but once at home it did not any more. I'm not a tech person, so I did not try anything to make it work again.
I still can reliably turn on the Tesla app, log in manually with entering my password and unlock and drive the car - - - who wants to do that

Got the 2 extra key cards 1 week later. No charge - probably because they felt badly about not getting my phone to work. Now I have one in my wallet to lock and unlock the car. The other one is inside the car under the 'piano' used to 'start' the car if I'm too slow entering - which is most of the time. My wife has one of the other cards and the last one is in a safe place at home - in case we loose one.
Having read most of the posts here I wholeheartedly agree that a key fob is required. This phone thing is obviously not working with any reasonable reliability.
How about somebody with the necessary skill and knowledge making an aftermarket key fob?

That sounds very similar to my experience. Turned out to be a "server" problem at the Mother Ship. When you pick up the car someone has to enter the fact that the car has been delivered. When at the delivery center, this is temporarily overridden to allow for instructions to be given to the new owner. Once you drive away Phone as a key stops working until the delivery is entered.

no sooner than I gloat, the issues arise. Inconsistent all day yesterday. If i entered my car 15 times yesterday, it only worked like three times.
a few times, took like a minute as i fiddled with my phone. maybe twice i used my card. the rest i had to bluetooth reset.

twice it wouldn't lock when i walked away, and i had to lock it through the app.. but both times, only after it denied me on the first attempt cuz it wasn't connected, then the second attempt, it must have connected and let me lock it.

but then let me in fine this AM.
