Russia losing fighter jets led to Russia losing the landing ship Novocherkassk.

26 Dec: Phenomenal! Ukrainians Destroy 20% of Russian Navy in the Black sea

According to Reporting from Ukraine, the ship was destroyed by four Storm Shadow missiles launched from two SU-24 jets. These are inferior to the Russian SU-34s that were recently shot down but since Russia stopped flying in the area, Ukraine took the opportunity to use their own jets to take out the ship. The Storm Shadow attack was aided by a large scale drone attack on Crimea from Odesa which saturated the Russian air defense.

I am very impressed by how well Ukraine coordinated their efforts to get maximum benefit from their very limited resources. They used a Patriot system (or whatever) to shoot down Russian jets and temporarily close the sky to Russia which gave Ukraine the opportunity to saturate Russian air defense with drones and risk two of their SU-24 jets to launch the Storm Shadow missiles close to or across the front lines. Closing the sky also helped Ukraine defend their beleaguered troops on the left bank of the Dnieper.

The high level of coordination shows that attacks like this one on the landing ship are extremely non-trivial and probably won't become the norm until something changes. Russia will scramble to close holes in their defenses as they get exploited so Ukraine will have to keep finding new and creative ways to break through. Let's hope they do this as they get F16s, ATACMS, NASAMS, etc.
