I just received this information from my Delivery Orientation Specialist regarding financing through Tesla.
The resale value guarantee price is valid for up to 15,000 miles per year (so a total of 45,000 at turn in). Anything more will reduce the value guarantee by $0.25 per mile. I am attaching the entire resale value guarantee agreement to this email so you may read it over.

At this point, the market value of a 3 year old Model S is higher than the buyback guarantee would be. Unless something tragic happens to Tesla in the next 3 years, I would expect the same to hold true for Model X.

Barely. I'm not even at the two year mark and I'm seeing similar cars to mine going for the mid-60s on resale while my buy-back is mid 50s. The lack of AWD and Autopilot hit the value of the early MSs hard. I could easily see at the 3-year mark (14 months from now) that the buy back price is right in the ballpark. Especially if I'm looking for the convenience of a trade-in. I'm very happy I have the buy-back on my MS.

There is so much uncertainty in this space right now I'll probably do the buyback again (or lease) my MX. What happens when Tesla releases the 400 mile battery? Or the gigafactory gives enough efficiencies that Tesla lowers its prices by $20k across the board. Or the upgraded autonomous driving tech? Or suddenly with the introduction of the Bolt, EV popularity explodes and the technology progression takes off?

i know that's a lot of hypotheticals but enough that it makes me want some insurance for this huge purchase.

You book a service appointment and upgrade your existing battery. :)

Does that actually exist, can a tesla model S 60 kW battery upgrade to 90 kW and at what price?
David Nolan, a writer for Green Car Reports replaced his 60 with an 85, but battery costs were significantly higher then. You can read about it here:

Life With Tesla Model S: Battery Upgrade From 60 kWh To 85 kWh

IIRC, it cost him about $17K for the swap. If the form factor and cables are still the same, then you may be able to replace a 60 with a 90. Certainly worth contacting Tesla to find out. But pre-gigafactory, it is probably still an expensive proposition.

I see in the not so distant future third party companies who specialize in reconditioning tesla batteries, maybe by replacing the cells inside the form factor, like a batteries plus store does.
