Today, I received the first substantive news from Tesla about my reservation in more than two years. (I hold reservation #5xxx.) In response to my email to Tesla regarding the charging capacity of the Model X, I received a telephone call from Tesla. I was informed that I would be asked to configure by the end of the year and that a vehicle would be available for me to test drive in Florida prior to that time. "Production" models are expected to actually start to be produced starting in January 2016.

It’s hard to take Tesla's stated time line seriously, but they have now created some real expectations for me. I have some concerns about the windshield, doors, seats, etc. so I’m anxious to get some actual exposure to a Model X.

Interesting - I'm not far behind you (could be 1200, could be 250... your number is a bit vague) and I haven't heard from them, yet.
I don't believe for a second that they'll start producing Pxxxx reservations in January. They haven't started with the Sigs and if we have learned anything at all is that they don't understand how the "calendar" works.
But I'm very happy that they are so confident that cars will be available to test drive prior to configuration for people with >5k reservation number. My guess is that Portland will be among the earlier stores to get a Model X test drive car, so having that at some point in Q1 (which is "end of the year" in Tesla speak) is nice.

OK, the Tracker is great, but as a Sig Res. holder I am seeing NO discussion or direction from Tesla about progress, how many cars are in production, nada. I realize it is a no win position for them, but I seem to remember with S we were informed about five a week, then five a day and Tesla kept us kind of informed. Did I dream this?

The difference between then and now is when Model S was introduced, that was Tesla's only revenue generating product. Therefore, it was important to show investors progress towards completing sales. This time around the Model S is a mature product, and they have other projects such as Tesla Energy and drive trains for Daimler, which makes the Model X roll out process less significant. Regardless of how fast they ramp up, it's going to be a small percentage of revenue this quarter. What matters more is that they show they are building several hundred per week as promised by the end of the year in order to allow for expected growth in 2016.

In addition to what @timf wrote, it still feels like Elon and Tesla are trying to under-sell the Model-X. Probably because it's not a product that they can't make money on yet. Also, they'd rather have a Model-S sale right now than a potential Model-X sale sometime in the future.

I have a high SigX res number. With only a month to go before it will be impossible to get a car to New England from California, the probability of a storm making even that estimate seem generous, and no progress report after two Tuesdays and two Thursdays since November first I am taking a page from Bonnie's book on expectations and hoping for January. The typical mid-January thaw we get in Maine would be a nice time for a road trip. Of course all that extra time will be spent wishing for folding seats and high-speed destination charging additions.

I spoke with a Tesla sales guy today in Massachusetts. He said the last shipment of cars had a Model X or two on it. They were all headed to New England (CT I think?). He also confirmed to me that there is at least one Model X in New England already.

Given the delays and corporate silence, pictures and reports by new owners on this forum mean more to me than anecdotes from "sales guys".

I was in Milford for service last Thursday the 19th and they had 13 S' ready to be delivered, no X's. My guess is that sig's will start next week. A friend in Cali was told to expect delivery mid to late December. I hope they deliver some to the east coast by the end of the year.

My Delivery Specialist has seemed quite thorough in checking with the factory when answering my questions. The latest: "... it’s our intention to build and deliver Signature Model X’s by the end of the year."

I am VIN 00429. Sounds like all Sigs (that get configured) will be delivered in 2015.

Considering Tesla hasn't been able to build much of anything in two months when it comes to the Model X, it'll be interesting to see whether the factory can suddenly build 1,250 cars in one month (with Chanukah and XMas potentially subtracting useful days). I have very strong doubts.

Not how I read it. The word "all" or even "most" is missing. They could meet the stated goal by building and delivering 2 Signatures by the end of the year. Well at least Bonnie should get hers in 2015!

Ummm. We don't know how many MXs they've already built but we have evidence from various sources that some are built
we also know that tesla inspects the crap out of the first cars.

Some evidence:

- test track sightings
- 6 seen in final inspection area
- some DS telling owner their car was heading to paint shop

This is my latest theory on Model X production: Tesla is trying to make sure that they hit their guidance on vehicles delivered in the 4Q. They have been furiously cranking out Model S production on both lines (My speculation). So both the old production line (Model S only) and the new (Model S and X capable) are running, focused on Model S production. As soon as Tesla is confident they have produced enough Model S cars to reach their 4Q numbers, they will focus on tweaking line 2 on X production. They can still push through some Model X cars through Line 2 (again, just my speculation) during off hours or possibly weekends to keep programming and training the robots and various parts of the line to get ready for full X production which would fit the facts that some cars appear to be in production and are in various states of build/inspection. But they can't afford to slow Line 2 down until Model S production has reached a point of filling their 4Q numbers.

If you look at the original referral Model S referral program, Tesla said that it would end October 31st and people who were eligible would be able to get a Founder's Model X. So that indicates to me that Tesla all along knew that the main production line would not be spooled up for X production until sometime in November or later.

I hope that the Model S production has reached the point where Tesla is confident in their guidance and they can basically stop Line 2 and focus on getting it up to speed on X production. (Again this is all speculation, but the theory seems intriguing and sound to me.) This would also kind of fit Elon's statement in the 3rd Q earnings call that he expects that the factory will be producing several hundred Model X cars a week sometime in December.
