Who's going to TESLIVE from the Seattle Area?

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I would love to come, but it's just not practical to come from the Seattle area without superchargers. And my car has only a single charger. If it was one day's drive, I'd seriously consider it, not less because I'd love to take another road trip. I've previously gone to Whistler, which was about 1/3 this distance.

Let's see what the supercharger announcement in the next week or two will be. But I agree, my 60kWh single charger wouldn't be nearly as quick as an 85kWh with twin chargers.

The only Supercharger open before TESLIVE will be the one in Centralia. Dang. Here's what I can gather on PNW attendees (this is not an exhaustive list; just people I have heard about).

People that won't be in contention for HPCs for various reasons:

blurry_eyed, modelsinboise, walla2, chads, tomsax, marshallsj, cstewart, torklift central

People that may be in contention for HPCs:

Carpooling: brianman, francisl, discoducky (FrancisL will post a schedule - heading down July 9-10, returning July 14-15)
Leaving early for BC2BC: adiggs (returning along 101), six
Leaving early for other reasons: buzzbuzz (heading down July 1; returning July 14-16)
Driving on their own, I think: andym (he sent a schedule to the NOTC google group; he won't return until July 17-18), dbullard, fcloutier, pgorski

Know anybody else from the PNW that is driving down? Please let us know so we can coordinate.

Here's a list of places to charge along the way (North to South) and some notes about each. Most are 14kW Roadster HPCs, so if you are in a Model S you need twin chargers to take advantage of the speed, and an HPC adapter cable to plug in. You should get about 43 miles of range per hour of charging at the HPCs (Orland is a little faster; you might get 50mph).

They are the blue pins on the map HERE (click on each pin for details). Just in case you arrive and find somebody else plugged in, you might look for a nearby campground with a 14-50 (KOAs usually have good ones). Or remember that in OR and WA, there are 6kW 30A J1772 stations every 25-50 miles along I-5 as part of the West Coast Green Highway. (They are adjacent to 50kW CHAdeMO stations that Tesla has not released an adapter for. Email [email protected] if you would like to ask when an adapter will be available. They won't answer, but they will note your interest).

And please remember: put a note on your dash with your phone number, and/or the time you will be finished charging and come back to move the car.

Centralia, WA
The Supercharger will be operational! No worries on this stop. Too bad it's not next to Burgerville like the Roadster HPC, though.

Portland, OR
The best stop is the Tesla store in Tigard, which is at a mall. Last I heard they had one Roadster HPC and one Model S HPWC, but they planned to get two more HPWCs. These may be in use for test drive vehicles, employees and locals. The brianman carpool will stop here noonish on July 9. Other options in the area:
- Hotel Modera downtown; they have a 70A Roadster HPC. You have to pay (varies, but usually $20) for valet parking; they won't let you go down with the car.
- World Trade Center parking lot downtown; they have a 70A Roadster HPC. $5/hour for parking. The HPC is visible straight down the entrance; they'll charge you even if you exit right away because it is in use
- "Electric Avenue" near PSU downtown has several 30A J1772 stations. Pay for parking.

Eugene, OR
At a biofuels filling station. The HPC is locked - you have to ask an employee to unlock it, which means you must be there during business hours (see link; they may leave it unlocked if you call ahead). Not much in the area, but they have seats, wifi, restrooms, and good food.
The brianman carpool will be here late afternoon on July 9.

Canyonville, OR
They have a Roadster HPC in the parking lot of the Creekside restaurant, which is part of the Truck and Travel Center. 100 yards away is a West Coast Green Highway CHAdeMO & J1772 station. Across the freeway is the Seven Feathers Casino/hotel with nice rooms and restaurants, and an RV park full of 14-50s (although they don't allow tent camping). Good location to spend the night; they have a shuttle between the various facilities.
The brianman carpool will spend the night here July 9. AndyM will stop here late afternoon on July 10.

Yreka, CA
A Roadster HPC at an older Comfort Inn. Nice owners. A few fast food dining options in the mall next door. The Mexican place is pretty good.
The brianman carpool will stop here the morning of July 10. AndyM may spend the night here July 10.
On the way back, buzzbuzz and brianman/francisl/discoducky plan to stay here on the 14th. Six hasn't planned but is likely coming the same route at the same time. Buzzbuzz will only go to Portland on the 15th, so he will likely be behind the carpool.

Orland, CA or Chico, CA
Orland has a Roadster HPC at a BBQ-style restaurant; not much else nearby. If it's busy, you could head over to Chico, which is on the way to the Folsom Supercharger. See entry on the map; they have a solar powered Model S HPWC (does not work with the Roadster!) and some 14-50s, but they are inside a business and they would like you to call ahead for access. I have not been to the Chico stop, but heard from an owner that used it.
AndyM will be at the Chico stop late morning on July 11.

Sacramento area
There is a 70A HPC near some 30A J1772 in Woodland at a mall.
Or a 70A J1772 next to a 30A J1772 in downtown Davis.
Or a 70A HPC in Rocklin, if you come down from Chico.
Or the Supercharger in Folsom!

From the Sacramento area you can make it to Fremont.

As noted in Chad's e-mail I will be driving south starting on June 29th as part of the BC2BC EV rally so there should be no issues on that leg. Seeing the early information from others about potential conflict driving back, my tentative plans are to leave earlier then most on Sunday and try to be ahead of people on the trip back to Seattle. I will post times this weekend.

I just booked a flight down to SJC for Friday morning as I must be at work as much as possible that week (wish I could drive down). But I'm still in to drive back with someone if you have room? I'm happy to leave whenever Sunday or even Monday if anyone is staying for the Sunday drive event.

Hi all,

Andy, I have reservations, and can confirm that I don't overlap with any of the times and places in the spreadsheet (either by going well ahead of most, or by returning along the road less traveled ).

Of course, Six and I (and a couple of other Model S's?) are going to be wrestling over cables all the way south, in our mad rush to trample each other in our quest for victory in BC2BC. Or maybe we'll just work it out amongst ourselves as we go along.

If anybody will be driving up the CA / OR coast after Teslive, we might want to coordinate. I will be driving back along Hwy 1 / 101 all the way up to Cannon Beach, with travel on the back half of Sunday the 14th, and then 3 days after that to get home to Portland (Arcata, CA; Bandon, OR; home).

Think we have 3 model S and 1 roadster in EV rally fighting for the 70 Amp chargers of the world. I don't think a staggered start will solve it. But I am intending to go to the optional events and we travel shorter distances going down. So I will be going to Portland on day one. Then Grant's Pass on day two. A distance that I will roughly cover in one day on the way back. But Grant's Pass to Santa Rosa will be challenging as it is long and sparsely populated with 70 Amp chargers.
