Tow Hitch - OEM vs Aftermarket pros/cons

Again though, that's a cascade of safety concerns. The factory hitch replaces the rear crash bar (effectively the inner bumper structure). The mounting points are by definition part of the crumple zone, and are designed to deform at a certain level of force. Any aftermarket company could make...

Tow Hitch - OEM vs Aftermarket pros/cons

The hitch also replaces a part of the crash structure. Having something blessed by the manufacturer is pretty significant in this regard.

Purchasing a 4x 19" Gemini wheel set with SUMMER tires from Tesla?

It's the other way around - Tesla packages are actually cheaper than TSportline. The least expensive 19" wheel+tire package from TSportline is currently $2800 plus shipping. The Gemini wheel+snow tire package from Tesla is $2500 including shipping. (Installation as well.) Take-offs aren't...

Rotate tires or just get new ones?

I'll second this. I last checked my tread depth closing in on 21,000 miles- the fronts were at 6/32", and the rears still at 7/32". It would absolutely be possible for someone to hit 25K with all four tires at 6/32" (we might still do it). And in the best of cases, if someone did mainly...

Purchasing a 4x 19" Gemini wheel set with SUMMER tires from Tesla?

Does anyone by chance know the price to order a set of four 19" Model Y Gemini wheels with the stock SUMMER tires directly from Tesla? A while back I remember they were only priced as individuals... and 4x Gemini+Summer were quite a bit more expensive than 4x Gemini+Winter, as the later were...

    2023.6.9

Code forks are not free. They have two parallel systems that do similar things, but which share resources and outputs. Both have graphical display overlays, both have audio alerts, and both are high-priority time-sensitive processing that are intertwined with the existing video feeds and...

    2023.6.9

"Not much scope for regression"?? This release completely replaces a 360-degree hardware sensor system with a persistence-based obstacle-recognizing software vision implementation. A slow fleet rollout is absolutely appropriate for a change of this magnitude.

Will 18” aero wheels fit on the Model Y?

Those are OE Tesla wheels? Did you have them painted/powdercoated silver?

Tesla removing some automatic window features to comply with NHTSA regulations

The regulations do seem to lag the current state of keyless vehicles. This seems to be the key section: ... however, pressing the brake in a Tesla is what activates the "ON" condition (ready to drive). The "ACCESSORY" position equivalent is reached merely by opening a door, or closing the...

    2022.44.25

I'd actually like it if the right side had less. The bolder directions are welcomed, but splitting the navigation UI, with no way to hide the lower portion, feels a lot more cluttered on the right half of the display. 😟

18" Aero wheels and Model Y load limits

Sadly this seems to be the hurdle for almost everyone. Buying the wheels bare from Tesla costs a fortune. Buying a set from Tesla with snow tires (to take off) is about the same price, and gets you the sensors, etc, but at that point you might as well get the MY Gemini set with the snow...

    2022.44.25

I believe that working from a longer distance (basically anywhere?), and ability to know the up/down status of the door, are the primary selling points. But I think I also read that one subscription works across multiple cars - so if you are a household with two or more non-HomeLink Teslas, the...

DiY HomeLink Install using in car Service Mode - No need for Tesla Service or ToolBox

You also had a known fixed cost. With this new subscription, who knows? Will it go up over time because of inflation and other costs? Historically, nearly every subscription service does this, so I would expect this service to do the same. It could also go down if there is too much...

    2022.44.25

We didn't get 2022.44.25.1, only got 2022.44.25.2 on Monday, but then 2022.44.25.3 downloaded today. So they were cautious with the rollout at first, but it looks like 2022.44.25.3 is the "good for everyone" push. IMO, their software process really seems improved over the past few months...

    2022.44.25

The bad news is that during the height of the chip shortage, Tesla was basically forced to keep revising parts, just to keep production running. So the software is more complicated to support all of the variants, and merging/testing the branches has almost certainly been difficult, with some...

Just received my new car without ultrasonic sensors

On cars produced before a certain date, there is a feature where you can press a button on the app, and it will open (or close) all four windows a small amount for ventilation. It's incredibly handy on hot days, as it saves a ton of energy compared to the cabin overheat protection while parked.

The last couple updates before V11 dropped were great. (That's when routing was revamped, and we got the ability to add waypoints.)

Thanks for the photos! When climate is closed, and you tap on the temperature, did that small pop-up interface change at all?

    2022.44.25

Looks like they are back to their staged rollout cadence. Only a portion of the fleet got 2022.44.25.1, another medium sized group on 2022.44.25.2, and some of us haven't had either yet.

Just received my new car without ultrasonic sensors

@Boza - I understand your points, but I don't think that impacts the ability to claim success. On limited scenarios - Let's say the comparison is Vehicle Set A (a group of cars with approx 70% FSD driving, 30% human driving in tough "non-FSD-able" conditions), vs Vehicle Set B (100% human...

Just received my new car without ultrasonic sensors

I think we're already beyond that actually. Statistics for collisions per mile driven, vehicle repair costs per mile driven, or even deaths per mile driven, are not that difficult to come by. The entire insurance industry revolves around having these numbers, having them be current, and having...

Holiday update? what can we expect?

Our car said "Auto Defogging" the other day. I have no idea what combination of factors causes that mode to be active, but the end result is a combination of temperatures, output vents, fan speed, and duration that was done for us automatically. So "auto" definitely encompasses more than...

Holiday update? what can we expect?

In addition to the spot-on things you mentioned, the "automatic" system as a whole could do some clever things to balance the constraints. For example, if user wants the temp warmer, but the fan speed low, and the system was at its limits for heating, the auto seat heater could hold on to...

Just received my new car without ultrasonic sensors

I do, but it falls apart. Your spork with the steak knife on the handle is a great example of why sensor fusion fails... not why we can't reduce sensor diversity. You kept all of the sensors in both cases. 😁

Just received my new car without ultrasonic sensors

Think about the bigger picture. Tesla is doing a good thing by demonstrating FSD on the minimum number of sensors possible. Our world has a precedent that a human with ONE EYE is safe to drive on public roads. We humans don't have LIDAR, we don't have RADAR, we can't see through fog, we can't...

2022.44.2 and Sentry Mode Clip length

Since this seems to be the dominant 2022.44.x thread... Heads-up, that 2022.44.2 may take longer to install than the 25 minutes specified. On our Model Y, it was 42 minutes, and this was coming from a very recent 2022.40.4.2 install. So make sure you have plenty of time before installing...

Holiday update? what can we expect?

I'm sure it's technically possible, but then it would take seven taps to cycle through the settings, which is really pushing it from a "using while driving without looking away from the road too long" UI perspective.

Holiday update? what can we expect?

Elon has MUCH bigger things going on right now than Tesla software announcements. 😁

2022.44.2 and Sentry Mode Clip length

Not compared to the last week or so. The final versions of 2022.40 were also huge rollout nearly fleet-wide changeovers. We were discussing in another thread - it really does feel like Tesla felt good about the software recently. As if the branch merges and conditional car stuff had all...

Holiday update? what can we expect?

In your defense, the Homelink solution is technically better though, right? I've read generally good reviews for myQ overall, but the negative comments are that the myQ servers don't seem to be 100% reliable, so there are times when it just... doesn't work. Homelink, being a local RF...

Holiday update? what can we expect?

This - but I'd go so far as to say we don't even need "Waze" as an app - just the functionality Waze provides. Road hazard reports integrated in the Tesla navigation would be wonderful.

    2022.44.x

Unlike 2022.40.7 and 2022.40.8, it looks like they are sending this one to a larger number of cars. I was wondering what was next after 2022.40.x - they seemed to be updating the whole fleet one minor version at a time.

    2022.40.4

From the TeslaFi stats, the "pending installations" for 2022.40.4.2 is now only a couple percent away from covering the entirety of the non-FSD fleet! Has there ever been a time like this, where Tesla had all of the cars on the same software version, rather than the artificial 50/50 split...

    2022.40.4

Looks like 2022.40.4.2 is getting a very wide rollout - including to those on 2022.40.4.1. From the outside, this 2022.40.4.x branch really does look like one Tesla feels good about.

Is automatic profile selection working better now?

The same applies too if you have a child in a car seat behind you. :(

Is automatic profile selection working better now?

Some of us just like to sit in the car and not have the seat move back and forth underneath us for no reason.

    Model Y changes over time

That would be a huge QOL improvement - happen to have a link? 👍
  42. L

Is automatic profile selection working better now?

That's what we do. But it's an artificial problem that forces countless unnecessary interactions with the touchscreen, automatically changes the music, changes the seat heaters, etc. It's an automation misstep from the "all user input is error" car company.
  43. L

Is automatic profile selection working better now?

This is the sequence which annoys us the most: Driver and passenger get in the car, both having phones placed in the charging dock. Driver drives some nonzero distance. Car is parked, driver exits the vehicle taking their phone with them (passenger stays). Some time passes Driver returns to the...

How different is the new Comfort Suspension (October 22 -) to the previous gen (prior to Oct 22 change)?

They also said the same thing about the cars which came without the CCS adapter support. So there is a precedent for "not available" meaning "we aren't prepared to do it at this time".

    MY front seats different

The driver and passenger seat bottoms have to be different to accommodate the different ejection mechanisms. For the passenger, it's simple - blow the roof and eject straight up and out. But for the driver, the steering wheel is in the way - so the obstruction geometries dictate a more rearward...

Took a chance on these Aliexpress jack stand pads

FYI, the service manual specifically says in several places not to lift the vehicle on opposite diagonal corners or it will cause damage. So with a normal floor jack and those jack stand adapters, there's no way to get the pair of jack stands under the front lift points. The best you could do...

Buying a Single 19” Gemini Wheel and Tire as a Spare?

You'll hate yourself later if you do that. Instead of having five identical wheels/tires, you have four plus a spare. What's the difference? With five the same, if you get a flat, you swap on the fifth, have the flat repaired, and you're done. With four + spare, if you get a flat, you swap...

    2022.40.4

Based on what has happened with the most recent FSD branch, I'm starting to wonder if an upcoming "regular" branch will use the FSD stack for highway Autopilot on non-FSD cars. That would be the big merge of big merges - FSD and non-FSD branches unify, it's a big enough deal for non-FSD cars to...
