    Issue with Powerwall thermal programming

A lot of good suggestions. I will be adding signage to the box indicating Powerwall batteries inside. I will upgrade the wifi thermometer to one that will send out alerts when the temperature exceeds set thresholds. I will look into adding in some bimetallic passive vents. Thanks to all for the...

    Issue with Powerwall thermal programming

Thanks for your thoughts. Just as the insulation keeps the cold out, it should keep the heat out during the summer. If not I could latch the doors open or just remove them altogether during the warmer times. The aluminum plate comes preattached to the heater, not sure if I can safely remove it...

    Issue with Powerwall thermal programming

It has been over a month now since I first reported my issue with the Powerwall batteries not preheating during cold weather if the grid power is off. As alexguichet mentioned, version 1.46.0 may have fixed this issue. It was released after my experience. To date, I have not been able to check...

    62.8 Hz at 92%?????

In my experience there are a couple of conditions that Tesla will shut down solar even if the batteries should be charging. The first that seems more likely is that the solar produces more charge than the batteries can take. In my case my two batteries can receive about a maximum of 6.7 kw...

    Issue with Powerwall thermal programming

No, there is no place to put my batteries inside. I would have done that in the first place if I had. The heaters have an attached thermostat set to come on at 40°F and off at 55°F, so there should be no issue in overheating the batteries. According to the powerwall information, the optimum...

    Issue with Powerwall thermal programming

I just found out from Tesla support that the built in thermal warming for the batteries in cold weather is only functional if there is grid power. This is an issue in my area where I live in the mountains and subject to cold in the winters. My batteries are mounted on the outside wall of my...

Grid down, cold, and can't charge PWs?

I have 2 Powerwalls setup for whole house backup. I don't know the temperature of the Powerwalls at the time. The overnight temperatures dropped down into the 20s and only got up to about 50 during the day. However, it seemed the batteries warmed up slower than the outside temperatures. In...

Grid down, cold, and can't charge PWs?

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago and called support. They told me when it is cold out and grid power is down, in my case under 40, that the batteries cannot accept a high charge. At the time my batteries were. At the time my batteries were at 70% and correctly discharging. However Tesla...

    Whole house power filtering

The whole house surge protector I installed was an Eaton CHSPT2Ultra as seen here on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/CHSPT2ULTRA-Ultimate-Protection-Length-Height/dp/B01AQAKRSS/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=whole+house+surge+protection&qid=1572307273&sr=8-3 It does not protect your house from bad power...

    Whole house power filtering

My combined solar + Powerwall system is enough to allow me to run in self-powered mode almost all the time. This has the same effect as power filtering as you are not using grid power. This assumes that you size your system to meet 100% of your needs. Like AuPanda, I also have a whole house...

APS customer with solar, plan question

When I was having Tesla install my 2 Powerwalls, one of the documents they sent me to sign was to switch me from an annual billing plan to a monthly one. This meant that in the winter time when my usage was greater than my solar production, I would have to pay. When I called up to complain about...

    On-Grid Issues

I had the same issue with my power washing LL is, but I don't think putting out 65Hz is a powerwall issue. My old UPS units would only handle to 63Hz. I switched to Eaton UPS units that handle up to 70Hz and my UPS issues went away.

    How long will this take?

My Powerwalls were install in December 2017. Tesla activated them during install, but it was 9 1/2 months (August 2018) later before I got official PTO from SCE!

    Powerwall Charge Rate

I don't think you should have any worries especially if you are looking to only power some of your house. I power my entire house and have enough solar during the day to run my house and recharge the Powerwalls and then run off the Powerwalls in the evening. IN my area we have had a number of...

    Powerwall Charge Rate

Merrill, your PV system is about the same size as mine and I have 2 Powerwalls doing a whole house backup. I run all the time in self-powered mode and only sometimes in December and January do I need to pull off the grid. Right now, I am getting no lower than 30% on my Powerwalls and by 2pm on a...

    Powerwall mounted inside or outside?

Merrill, you should have no trouble mounting them outside. I am in the San Bernardino mountains and my Powerwalls are mounted outside on the back of my house. Temperature in the winter can get down to the teens and in the summer the high 90s. I have had the Powerwalls for a year and a half...

Help with deciding to install a powerwall

One thought would be to contact the SGIP administrator for your power company. Mine is SCE. I contacted them when I first found out about the Powerwall 2 and they provided information about the revamp of the SHIP program back in 2017. With the passage of the $800 million additional dollars there...

powerwall is awesome - installers not so much

I am in the southern California San Bernardino mountains and on SCE. My install went smoothly over 2 days. First day 4 guys showed up and on the second three guys. They were from Solar City and were very knowledgeable, competent and on time both days. My only complaint would be from reservation...

Is it time to cancel my power wall?

At the time I had my solar installed 11 years ago, the power company would only allow a certain amount over your current usage. However, it was a second home at the time and with a written letter to the power company explaining that, I was allowed to install as large of a system as I could fit...

Stormwatch caught charging from the grid

This happened to myself and others as well. I've disabled this feature to preserve the ITC until an answer can be given. Since I run in self-powered mode and the stormwatch occurred after sundown, my solar production was already done, so my batteries charged during the night from the grid.

    Stormwatch Failure

Ny Tesla app just indicated that a storm was forecast in my area and switched to backup mode only. Powerwall Firmware Logs Updated

Just noticed I am am 1.25.0 and see that under settings there is now a 'Notifications' which will notify you when there is a power outage. It is set on by default. This is a feature I've wanted as that when the power goes out I don't know about it because it is a seamless transition for me.

Powerwall 2 + UPS Connundrum - and solution

That is very interesting. I'll have to check this out with my current UPS (CyberPower 100VA) at a planned power outage coming next month. If it proves true, I'll change power supplies. I have found an even more robust one than the Minuteman. It is made by Eaton. A comparable model to the...

    Powerwall 2: Installation

Yes, in my case a single panel as you described. However, Tesla, after the meter, ran the directly to the switch and then back to the main panel 200A breaker. This way they did not need a second panel. Not sure how to describe exactly what they did. Tomorrow, I can get a picture and annotate it...

    Powerwall 2: Installation

This is my setup. There appears to be two different way Tesla does installs. In my case, they took the incoming service through my 200A panel directly to their 200A switch and then ran power back to the breakers in my main panel. In other installation they installed a second 200A panel, i.e Main...

    Powerwall 2: Installation

First big test of my installation came today with a planned SCE outage lasting 8 hours and 41 minutes from about 9am to 5:30pm. Everything worked as expected and hoped for. I noticed nothing when the grid power was shut off and ran on a combination of solar and/or battery as they day went on. A...

    Powerwall 2: SGIP/Incentives

Tesla charged me just $900 for the complete installation of two powerwalls. I thought this was extremely reasonable as they had 4 techs out day 1 and 3 techs out on day 2. They did a great clean job with the installation. Also, remember that Tesla is covering the cost of the SGIP application fee...

    Powerwall 2 "waiting list"

I'll add a couple of things to what Arnold said. 1. The Powerwalls were new to many localities and they had to figure out/develop procedures for the permitting process. I was second in line and my permit application was held up until the first persons application was figured out and processed...

I have a 6.2 kw system and had 2 PWs installed last month. My experience to date is that I run through at least 25% of my batteries (50% if I were to have just one) at night alone just running a few lights, computer and TV for a few hours. I am on whole house backup, but do not plan to run...

    Powerwall 2 "waiting list"

I would say this is partially correct. It is my understanding that Tesla will only back up certain circuits if a single powerwall is installed, but if two or more powerwalls are installed then you can use them as a whole house backup. I had two powerwalls installed and I am set up as a whole...

    What does this disclaimer mean?

When I originally put solar on my roof, I was told that I could only size a system that would cover my average monthly bill + 10% overage. This was controlled by the utilities. I managed to get around that limitation at the time because I was a part-timer in the mountains at the time. This was...
