Autopilot steering wheel hack

Well, speaking of burst bubbles...

"circular moment" doesn't mean anything. Moment is force times distance

"change in gravitational mass" doesn't mean anything. Unless you are considering relativistic effects, mass is explicitly not a function of gravity or any other acceleration and it certainly doesn't change "in relation to the axis of spin".

Don't have a spherical cow, man.

Reminds me of when I was a kid. We would drive for hours down the highway hands free. We would steer with our knees.

Would put our hands behind our heads to see the look on people driving past us.

Was stupid then, and still stupid now.

Tesla is working their butts off, trying to give us automated assisted driving, but somehow we are spending lots of our creative energy to slow down the advent of fully automated driving.

Ok I finally found some spare time to try this so for those still interested in a DIY yourself solution here is what I did.

I started with some plastic wraper to protect the wheel from oils or solvents that might sweat out from FIMO.

HOW, oh how, is this thread still going!?!?!?

I would say that Darwinism would weed the 'nag-cheaters' out... but the potential for innocent collateral damage is too great.

I get that there are idiots out there that want to drive carelessly. Just look to your right and left as you're driving with AP on (safely, ready to take action if needed) and notice all the 'genius' drivers looking into their phones as they drive!

An idiot will say "well, they have a right to use their phone when they want". This statement is, in and of itself, a true statement. We all do have the right to use our phones when/where we want.

But certain laws (and common sense) would dictate that it would be unwise to use your phone when operating heavy equipment - especially when operating near other vehicles carrying precious cargo (i.e., Sisters, Mothers, Wives, Husbands, Brothers, Fathers, Babies - do I need to go on?).

Does this stop people? Sadly, no. On my commute, a minimum of 30% (unscientific research, of course) of the drivers I see are distracted in one way or another (high percentile would be on their phones).

I would HOPE that if there ever were a thread/forum teaching people how to text and drive and not get caught (the equivalent of this thread), someone, somewhere, would shut it down!

Are there any mods here that can intervene? When will this idiocy end? I have lost loved ones to idiots that were 'distracted drivers'... this is NO JOKE. This is the last time I will look at this moronic thread.

I think you should stop hyper ventilating.

There is something called freedom of speech that lets us share thoughts and ideas. How every individual is going to use this knowledge in real life and the direct/indirect implications is another discussion.

BTW if you guys are concerned that being comfortable will make you fall sleep and crash you might as well replace the seat cushion with a plywood board on the driver's side... :)

In any case I demostrate how I moulded an "anatomic wheel handle".

So here it goes...

More sculpturing to get a nice comfortable grip. It came to me that FIMO material would make nice custom grips for competition target pistols.

When I was happy with the form I used a plastic butter knife to split the grip in two halfs.

I then pressed the neodymium magnets in and reinstalled the grips on the wheel with some baking sheet in between the two halfs to test the fit.

Finally bake it in the oven 30 mins @ 110C (230F).
The end result was satisfactory and but I had two minor problems. 1st the magnets fell off - they obviously need to be superglued in place. I might actually use black velcro instead.
Problem number 2 was a crack across the front (towards the dash) grip half. That was my fault because I did not put enough material back there but easily repaired with some gel CA glue. It can not be seen from the drivers position.

Test fit after sanding down the ugly glue beads and glueing in the magnets.
As you can see despite my best effords between spliting the mould and baking it, both halfs got a little flattened with a significant gap all around as a result. It probably had to do with the way I placed them lying in the oven... :(

Installed mounts nice and tight around the wheel though without any play what so ever and the grip - well... what can I say - it fits like a glove!

Unfortunately the rattle can I had in the garage was a glossy one so while still tacky I dabbed the grip with an old sponge for that textured, matt finish.
I'll let it dry overnight and tomorrow I will put the new anatomic grip to the test. Hopefully I will experience unimpeded and comfortable ride!

Ok just came back from a 90 km round-trip on highway. It was the most comfortable automotive trip ever! ;)

The surface was still tacky after drying for 24h - it seems the water based paint I used is incompatible with polymer clay. So I stripped the paint with acetone and a rug and used 150 grit to sand it to smooth flat black finish -very tactile pleasant. That concludes my little diy project for those interested in uncorking this "feature".
