... which means that in all families with children at least one of the parents has to stay home for 1,5 month (assuming the kids don’t go to their - vulnerable - grandparents). The economic impact must be huge.

Edit: Ohio and Maryland are also closing all schools, for a minimum of three and two weeks.

Since the teenagers are also out of school, there are a lot of potential babysitters.

I think this work out fine in the US.

Bernie's address to the United States this afternoon was the address from 'Leadership' that we should have already heard from the Trump Administration regarding the current coronavirus crisis. Strongly encourage listening to this. An excellent job of explaining how we must react to the crisis, and what we should have already been told by leadership at this point in time:

The Democrats are stupid, this is something that is actually impeachable and they blew their impeachment load on some idiotic Ukraine thing. If endangering the entire country's population for political gain isn't impeachable then nothing is, but that opportunity has already been wasted.
Why do you think it's impeachable? We elected an incompetent, but it's his call to make and he made it, and continues to make it.

And of course defining pre-symptomatic is a little bit tricky because often times people have very slight prodromal symptoms before they become febrile and develop significant cough .
This is exactly what I think is going on. People vary in the constellation and progression of symptoms but some will be something like this:

1. Runny nose, 'sinus' complaints, 'allergy' complaints and sneezing; then
2. Scratchy throat, occasional cough; then
3. More prominent cough; then
4. Fever and malaise; then
5. Pleurisy or progressive dyspnea

When is a person first symptomatic ? A physician will say (1), but depending on how careful the history is obtained (2), (3) or (4) may be reported.

Somewhat tangentially, the NYT has an interesting report on the success of Taiwan in containing Covid-19. Two of the pillars of infection detection were fever (4) and self reporting of symptoms and high risk contacts. I wonder if the Taiwanese are just much better educated and self report from (1) or other factors are in play. Their success is certainly indirect evidence that the math model is wrong.

The most basic problem with the 'asymptomatic and infectious' notion is that it goes against a century of understanding viral respiratory disease epidemiology and pathophysiology. Symptoms are indicative of significant cytopathic effect, itself indicative of viral load. Spread is via cough and sneezing; and to a lesser degree rhinitis, all symptoms of infection.

There is no limit in the Constitution to the number of times a president can be impeached. An opportunity to present the craven fecklessness of Donald Trump should never be overlooked.

wouldn't it be great to go back to the old days (wow, just a few months ago), where all we had to worry about was the 'terrorists'.

seems we stopped over-inflating that one and now have REAL problems. the old boogyman isn't quite as bad as this.

will we spend as much (money) on this as we did the old boogyman?

we need to.
