Here, if I knew how to, I would insert a meme about poking Elon with a stick.

Here you go. :)

There are really two main issues that make the new Twitter verification system a complete nightmare.

The first is the userbase. Very few normal users are willing to pay for a free social media site. Moreover, the main "selling point" of the service is to boost post visibility. The service inherently appeals only to people who both a) care extremely deeply about their posts being seen, and b) make posts that inherently are unappealing to other Twitter users (since people with appealing/interesting/funny/not-weird posts would be able to naturally grow an audience on the platform if they want to). So pretty much every single blue check is a hyper-online weirdo who is deeply bad at posting, despite being obsessed with twitter metrics.

The second is that verified replies get promoted to the top of every post. You have to scroll through all the blue check replies to get to even the most popular non-blue check replies. This is true even for blue check replies that have zero engagement, are completely off-topic, or are just straight up spam or scams.

As a result, if you're looking for relevant discussion on a popular tweet, you have to first scroll past the thoughts of some of the most terminally online, inherently unlikeable people on the planet. So normal users are constantly exposed to the most off-putting segments of the userbase.

It's like if Reddit incentivized every antisocial weirdo to post as much as possible to get their money's worth, and then forced every user to sort by controversial. It's a horrible structure that makes the product practically unusable for non-weirdos. Which is just how Elon likes it I guess.

The devil in me hopes he turns on Tesla. New hires will plummet in numbers and quality, if that has not already happened, and existing employees will mutiny. The board will FINALLY have to do something. This will lead to his separation from the company. He will go into exile, whereupon he will realize with dismay and shame what he has done. He will then become a new man (like old school Elon) and eventually return to the company as chief visionary/CTO or even CEO.

Here, if I knew how to, I would insert a meme about poking Elon with a stick.
Haha, nice fan fiction

A very coherent summary of the current situation.

What are the odds that Elon on Bill Maher on Friday is going to be a double rant about "Woke Cancel Culture". Where they compare people getting criticized on Twitter with book bans, making it against school rules to mention racism, making it against school rules to acknowledge LGBTQ+ people, etc.

Maher better be careful. Tucker Carlson's last big interview was with Elon and then Tucker was shown the door. 😉

Sigh... Maybe if Elon wasn't wasting so much time fighting the woke windmills then his rocket wouldn't have blown up the launchpad.

Don Lemon out of CNN. Don says he was kicked out unceremoniously, accusing CNN of not even having the decency to let him know ahead on why he is being given the boot. CNN refutes his version. Meanwhile several people have wondered if Don's interview with Vijay Ramaswamy was a catalyst/last straw for him getting the boot. Ro Khanna weighed in siding with Don and accusing Ramaswamy with revisionist history. Ramaswamy counters it with his own facts and narrative.

..... all of this is being played out on Twitter .....

Similarly pretty much all reaction to Tucker's ouster - those supporting him, and those who think Fox has done the right thing and it is long over due, is playing out on Twitter.. Media is giving its own spin, but to get the raw pulse of who is saying what, Twitter is the only place to go.

Yes because all the jabbering randos on Twitter were there, on the phone calls, or in person. Or have access to the top floor execs and the fired guys in both cases.
Right.
None of it is rocket science.

Lemon was fired because he just never recovered from basically saying women were increasingly less relevant after their 30s and then mounting a dumb argument about it. It just took CNN awhile to come to the conclusion he wasn’t redeemable.

Carlson was fired because his bosses could not control him and given the complete and utter BS he put on air and then privately SAID was BS?....He was fully capable of drawing another lawsuit or two that would be enough to put Fox out of business.

Elon being distracted and staying the heck away from Tesla and SpaceX are probably the best possible things for those two companies. Seriously, look at all the good software stuff we have gotten in recent Tesla updates while Elon has been distracted. Keep. Him. Occupied. Just too bad he is occupied spreading hate and trying to destroy democracy and society.

Elon is doing great things at Twitter that will ensure the west remains vaguely competitive with China etc. so that a more liberal stance can be maintained.

He will replace himself (mostly) at Twitter soon enough this year.

His already considerable Tesla and SpaceX hours will then increase but SpaceX will get the lion's share. He has 1m people to move to Mars.

Christ this guy is a clown. Where was his “back room dealing” tweet when Trump ran for a second term without debating his own f-ing party?

No incumbent President seeking re-election has faced a primary debate under our current system, dating back to the '70s.

The only people up in arms about this are trolls on the right (MTG, Matt Wallace, etc) or trolls on the left (Cenk). Progressives/leftists want someone more left and conservatives/MAGA trolls just want people outraged at their opponents over what has been a 50+ year norm. These people are either extremely stupid or believe their base is too stupid to notice.

Musk has been parroting a lot of the MAGA / QAnon rhetoric over the last couple years. That he has piled on with the "backroom dealings" narrative shouldn't be particularly surprising. His Twitter feed is basically an anti-trans, QAnon replica. It is who he is.

But of course, to that point...why is he saying dumb things? You either have to believe he's incredibly ignorant on this matter or he's seeking to engage with people who are too dumb to notice he didn't say the same thing about the RNC in 2016.

My guess is he's been red-pilled or whatever. He might not say the most extreme beliefs of QAnon in public, but obviously he has parroted disproven conspiracies - Pelosi, for example. He may also realize the only people who care to stick around and give him money on Twitter are those same people. So he's trying to pander to them to prove who full of free speech Twitter will be or whatever.

His descent into a conspiracy-filled, anti-reality troll continues.
