FINALLY!!! Maintenance Plans and Extended Service Agreement

Why is everyone acting like these service plans are mandatory ??

I must be missing something too here. People talking about not buying a Tesla because the service plan is more expensive than ICE vehicles?

I bought the service plan and perhaps that's why I'm perplexed. It's really just a waste of money and something that is not needed.

But try not changing your oil on your ICE vehicle, or getting new brakes, which my vehicle would probably soon be due for were it not for regenerative braking.

Are people saying that the extended warranty can't be bought if you don't buy the service plan? Or is the argument that you can buy it but they will deny you coverage if you don't have the service plan? I find both of those hard to believe but is that what Tesla is telling people? Or is it in writing somewhere?

I can't make sense of this thread so I must be missing something.

People make assumptions that to keep the factory warranty in effect that you must do the Tesla service (which is not true). As for purchasing the extended warranty, that is up to Tesla. There have been people here that have purchased the ESA without having their cars serviced every 12k miles.

As for purchasing the extended warranty, that is up to Tesla.

Is it? When I log into Tesla Motors I have the option to purchase it. I highly doubt it's not there for people who did not buy the service plan. I don't think Tesla exercises any discretion when it comes to selling the extended warranty. It's solely based on fixed dates and mileage, whichever comes first, as to whether you can buyit and there's no discretion to that.

So perhaps people are saying Tesla will deny an extended warranty repair if you don't have the service plan? I can possibly see that being the case if the repair would not have been needed if service was done, so is that the concern everyone has? Will they deny the 8 year power train/battery claims if you don't have service? I doubt it. The concern in this thread seems overblown to me.

You do not need to buy the service plans to be eligible for the extended warranty. But you do however need to do years 5-9 services if you want to have your extended warranty active.

Where is this stated? If that is the case, then I guess you have to buy both together. But perhaps they will sell it to you without the service plan and then not cover you for repairs that service would have prevented.

I would like to see the language they use because I've never heard of an inactive extended warranty.

Ask and ye shall receive:

Can anyone purchase an Extended Service Agreement?
Owners with Model S or X vehicles subject to the New Vehicle Limited Warranty which are still within the eligible purchase period can purchase the Extended Service Agreement.

What is the eligible purchase period for Tesla Extended Service Agreements, and what do they cover?
You may purchase the Extended Service Agreement no later than 30 days or 1,000 miles (1,600 km), whichever occurs first, past the expiration of your New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The Extended Service Agreement covers the repair or replacement necessary to correct defects in the materials or workmanship of most parts manufactured or supplied by Tesla during the coverage period, excluding the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery and drive unit, which have their own separate warranty.

If I choose not to service my Tesla vehicle, will this void my warranty or Resale Value Guarantee?
It is highly recommended that you service your Tesla vehicle every 12 months or 12,500 miles (20,000 km), whichever occurs first. If you do not follow this recommendation, your New Vehicle Limited Warranty will not be affected. During the agreement period of the Extended Service Agreement, your coverage may be affected if recommended service is not performed. See the Extended Service Agreement Terms and Conditions for further details. If you are financing your Tesla vehicle through Tesla Financing, you will only be eligible for the full Resale Value Guarantee if your Tesla vehicle is brought in for service per the above recommended timeline.

that I agree. But I bet more people are looking to purchase extended warranty than maintenance plan.

But the way that the ESA reads, is that service is mandatory DURING THE PERIOD the ESA is in affect. Thus, you could skip the first 4 years if you really wanted, but once you buy that ESA you'll need to have service annually, or every 12,500 miles.

Here is the ESA verbiage used up to this point:

The Owner’s Manual includes specific recommendations regarding the use, operations, and maintenance of the Vehicle. To maintain the validity of this Vehicle ESA, You must follow correct operations procedures and have Your Vehicle serviced as recommended by Tesla during the Agreement Period of this Vehicle ESA. If requested, proof of required service, including receipts showing date and mileage of the Vehicle at the time of service, must be presented before any repairs under this Vehicle ESA commence. Service within 1,000 miles and/or 30 days of Tesla’s recommended intervals shall be considered compliant with the terms of this Vehicle ESA.

Thank you. So you don't need the service plan but if you don't get it "your coverage may be affected if recommended service is not performed." Without reading the agreement -- I'm too lazy for that -- my guess is still that they can deny you coverage if the repair would have been prevented or minimized had you had the recommend service done. So the warranty is still active.

But the way that the ESA reads, is that service is mandatory DURING THE PERIOD the ESA is in affect.

That contradicts what Tesla says above: "your coverage may be affected if recommended service is not performed."

"May "is permissive -- not mandatory. If it was mandatory, the word would be "will" instead of "may."

But I would like to see the ESA wording you are referring to where it says it is mandatory.

Just to be clear to everyone, this is only during the Extended Service Agreement (ESA or "extended warranty") period if you have purchased it. Also not to be confused with the Maintenance Plan.

There is no maintenance required during the 4 year 50,000 mile warranty period.

If I choose not to service my Tesla vehicle, will this void my warranty or Resale Value Guarantee?

I think this has blown out of proportion. That is a standard clause in all extended warranty docs no matter which manufacturer. If you are not going to change your oil in an ICE car for four years and then your engine dies, the company that wrote the ESA is not going to foot the bill for repair. It's your negligence to not have followed recommended service.

And that's what Tesla's intention here is. If you don't bring your car in at the recommended intervals and your drive unit fails during the term of ESA, they have to protect themselves from your stupidity.

Also, Tesla is opening up its parts and some of the service items to owners and others so sometime in the future you won't have to go to Tesla for your annual checkup.

The drivetrain as actually handled by a completely different agreement.

What is the Tesla Extended Service Agreement?
Extended Service Agreements cover the repair or replacement necessary to correct defects in the materials or workmanship of most parts manufactured or supplied by Tesla during the coverage period, excluding the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery and drive unit, which have their own separate warranty. Coverage is based upon the purchased agreement option and takes effect on the date that your original New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires.

Even when I took delivery, my delivery specialist said just come in once every year and a half. But Tesla implies to come in as soon as you hit 12500 miles. I am curious on why they use the word "may" during the extended warranty period but not for the standard period.
