HPWC / UMC2 to Roadster adapter

When you first turn your key on, the firmware version is quickly displayed in the upper right hand corner of the VDS screen. Its in really small font, so make sure you have your reading glasses on or a camera recording in video.

I checked this out on my 2.5 Sport. With the door closed (important), the firmware version is displayed for 3-5 seconds in the upper right corner of the VDS. Was quite easy to find when I knew what I was looking for.

As I frequently get in the car, turn it on, and then get my feet shuffled around and close the door, I discovered that the "door is open" error shows up immediately and overrides the Firmware display. I figure this will happen for any other source of error for a car that isn't moving (charge port, trunk - that sort of thing).

No USB sticks or searching through text files required.

Model S to Roadster adapter

This might be a silly question, but does the CAN-SR work with the Model S to J1772 adapter? Has anyone tested this?

I have a J-CAN so I can't think of a reason I'd ever need to do it -- more of a curiosity...

In theory it should work, but it's not supported and hasn't worked for those who have tried it. Don't count on it, you're better off with the CAN JR than stacking two adapters.

Do I win a prize? It works just fine on my sample of one....I recently started using a Clipper Creek HCS-40 to charge my Roadster but was using the big heavy Tesla adapter on the Clipper Creek J1772 plug, so I tried out the Model S adapter on CAN Sr and it works beautifully. Figured I'd pick-up an extra Model S adapter next time I'm at the Service Center and that'll save me messing with the big Tesla cable when I only have a J1772 connection available.

That's the blue pilot signal light and then the pulsing amber in the above pics.

Final caveat: I haven't tried this anywhere except on my own Clipper Creek unit; I'll do some field testing on other J1772 stations next week if that's a help to anyone.

Model S to Roadster adapter

Today I tried out my new CAN SR at a few local Toronto charge stations and it performed flawlessly! No issues at all with three public HPWCs and one UMC.

I had a short moment of panic when I couldn't get the Model S connector to release from the adapter, it took me a minute to figure out that pulling back the locking ring releases it. Brilliant piece of engineering to have the lock ring interrupt the pilot signal in place of the Model S locking mechanism.

I loved the reaction from a rep at the Tesla Store, "What piece of wizardry is this?!" :)

Henry's great!

I wouldn't expect anything less from him. I do believe he prefers to be the best practice is to shut the charge off via the VDS or charger like he recommends for the CAN JR. Its a cleaner way to ensure things get shut down properly.

Tesla's chargers don't provide a way to stop charging, unlike most J1772 stations. So with the CAN SR it's OK to stop the charge with the thumb-latch. The adapter is designed to be used with one hand. Pull the Model S connector with your fingers while pushing the latch-ring with your thumb, which gives you extra leverage, releases the connector and stops the charge. I spent a lot of hours designing this feature because I never seem to get in or out of my Roadster without my computer/groceries/phone in one hand, leaving only one hand to plug/unplug the car.

Cool, thanks for that feature. So the CAN JR is the only one that you recommend stopping the charge before unplugging the J1772 plug / CAN correct?

With HPWC's there is no need to back in a Model S; the cord easily reaches. Look at all the cord coiled up under the HPWC in the foreground of the last picture.

I think that they backed the Demo cars in to better show them off while they were charging.

I saw the extra coils and sure they'd reach unlike a supercharger. But the way they set the HPWCs up, they're left justified and lined up to the rear charge port door. Unless I'm missing something from the pic (can't see the lines to divide up the spaces), it appears they were designed to have the car backed in.

You may be correct on intent, or perhaps, practice there, but with the HPWC, there is plenty of cord length to go around two sides of the Model S and charge after parking straight in.

I tested the SR CAN with my 2.5 at Corte Madera last night around 8p.m. Only received it that afternoon. Met one of Tesla's "Product Specialists" who helped me and was excited to see a Roadster charging there. In just the 15 minutes we were there the Roadster caught the eye of a few people passing by. The Roadster is still a "halo" car with people just saying "I want that", "Is that yours!?"

I wonder if lowering the profile of the Roadster isn't a plan. I think Roadster's should be charging at these showrooms and that being seen more could increase the value of the Roadster as there is still demand.

Did you get any pics?

You're right lowering the Roadster's profile is NOT in Tesla's plan. They have made it clear to many of us that they are in full support of our charging from MS HPWCs and they want our cars to be seen in public places.
