MASTER THREAD: Auto Wiper functionality, complaints, praise, etc.

This is so strange, seems well beyond just personal preferences. I'm happy with the auto-wipers 99% of the time but I'm also not experiencing these things most of y'all seem to see. Curious.
I'm with you. I'm normally one that bitches about the auto wipers on ANY car as they all pretty much suck at some level. I've never had one actually work right... however, the Telsa version seem to be as close to perfect as I've had. It didn't start out that way for sure... the first few iterations were horrible, but I can honestly say I've had zero need to touch any of the controls for over the last year bar the occasional manual wipe from some extremely light road mist... but it wasn't something that I would have expected ANY auto wiper to pickup for sure...

I don't know... maybe my car just works different. I have zero complaints. I do make it a habit to clean all the glass that that any cameras are looking out of weekly, so maybe it's a matter of having very clean glass on those front cameras ?

I think it makes a big difference where you use the wipers. If you mostly need them during they day, they mostly work well. If you need them at night in places with a lot of street lights, they work so-so. If you need them at night out in the country (like me) with lots of roads with no lighting whatsoever they are trash. Makes sense, cameras suck in the dark. None of this would be an issue if there were reasonable manual controls as a fall-back, but we all know about that. Yeah, I know you can use voice, but voice commands suck.

I'll play parrot here... the auto wipers really aren't of concern. Although the title of this thread mentions "auto", it's really the manual wiper controls that were discussed. Even if the auto wipers worked 100% of the time, they're still subject to the driver's preference... so they'll always be subpar to someone.

The biggest issue with the auto wipers is the lack of good backup manual controls. The current manual controls require you to talk to them (which is slow, requires a cell signal, prone to error, ruins conversations, and requires knowing the voice commands) OR they require you to interact with the touchscreen (which is a distraction to the driver).

The final option is to go "full manual" and just push the stalk button each time you want the windshield wiped. Sadly, this seems like the best option to me.

Unfortunately, I think it's going to take a serious accident caused by poor visibility in the rain to get this feature. Should we draw straws to see who will "take one for the team"? Not me, of course... I've got kids to feed!

Has anybody here DIYed some wiper controls (or seen it done online) in the 3/Y? I know the INGENEXT "Bonus Module" gets you access to the CAN bus the wipers are on (and they have decoded the wiper commands among other things), but I have not personally seen an installed setup or anything. The price is a little on the steep side and I will probably not try until I am out of warranty, but it is quite tempting.

In my experience, all the automation works flawlessly. Wipers, lights, everything. All of those depend on the front camera. Perhaps some aren’t keeping them as clean as needed or there is some other issue?
Working and working correctly are two different things. I see people do max speed wipes when it's drizzling in their cars (not Tesla). To me that's stupid and if my auto wipers did that, then it's not working correctly in my mind. The speed of the wipes has to correspond to the amount of water staying on the windshield.

I personally don't use the auto wipers because I think they wipe too much. I also use RainX so I rarely need wipers anyway. This is why manual is good enough for me.

it is good that owners are good at finding ways to avoid using features that don't work !

Instead of these hackers focusing on making products for an already fast car to go faster, they should work on something more useful like a 3rd party kit to adapt a proper rain sensor.

Since they know how to tap into the wiring, and the software, it should be child's play for them to make an aftermarket rain sensing wiper kit. Look at how this guy was able to wire in a sensor to his car.

In terms of changing controls, try learning the few voice commands needed to change the wipers. They work well, so I don't need them to change the controls.
Really? What a butcher job. Who wants an ugly rain sensor stuck on the middle of the windshield with crumpled clear package tape?

Same here. Prolly the same 3 rainfalls.
Haha most likely yes. I hit my 4th rainfall on Friday (quite heavy actually) and the auto wiper function worked perfectly. The only time I needed to hit the manual wipe button was from some moisture from other cars spraying up onto the windshield. It wasn't actually raining at this point but I guess the sensors didn't pick it up. No biggie though.

After many months of not bothering with the ‘auto’ wipe setting because it was so inaccurate, I tried it again on the strength of the comments above. It did seem to be working better. I will have to test it out further. Maybe Tesla made some quiet software improvements to it.

I would still like more adjustibility in the manual controls though, especially for low-end intermittent functionality.

Wiper sensitivity higher/lower voice command
