Same with CEOs, tech company leads, and obscure politicians. And who is going to cross Mr Spielberg off the list?

Fair enough. I suppose what defines a "celebrity" is sort of like Potter Stewart's definition of pornography -- you can't define it but you know it when you see it.

I have my own definition of what a "celebrity" is, and it includes some CEOs, some tech company founders, and some politicians, though clearly not all of the people who would qualify in these categories. There is definitely going to be some subjectivity to the definition. Steven Spielberg definitely counts as one (which, of course, was your point), but I think you know that there's a difference between Steven Spielberg and a producer or editor who would be known to exactly no one outside of Hollywood.

I don't necessarily suggest we come up with hard and fast rules (I am, after all, the person who mentioned Zuck's dad in this thread, though I don't think he'd qualify as a celebrity). But I think someone who has penetrated the news in more than just industry publications and would be known by at least some people outside of the industry in which s/he works could help ensure that the list doesn't become so large that it becomes meaningless.

In other words, when I see someone listed that I haven't heard of, I expect that there will be a Wikipedia entry for them, and that once I read it I will accept that the person can probably qualify as a public figure/celebrity even if they are unknown to me (many musicians and X Games athletes, for example, would fall under this definition). I don't think anyone with an IMDB page (without more) qualifies, just like anyone who has held elective office shouldn't qualify unless there is some other reason that they would be known outside of Hollywood or by political junkies respectively.

How about some categories?

Talent (radio, author, recording, stage, screen)
Business (the C's, tech leaders, inventors,
Politicians (local and large, worldwide)
Sports figures (all sports)

Other... (Zuck and Franz's dads)

BTW do you have the Google guys yet?

vfx meant that Spielberg is a well-known behind the camera name--easily a celebrity. So he's asking who has the gall to cross Spielberg off the celebrity list just because he doesn't spend any time in front of the camera?
Having a credit in gigantic letters is a bit of a different thing.

That's like equating "Warren Buffet" with every "investor".

Celebrity is a famous or well-known person, a person who is widely-recognized in a given society and commands a degree of public and media attention. It doesn't matter what kind of job that person has. Mr. Spielberg definitely is widely-recognized, famous and well-known person. Also according to this celebrity list he is a celebrity. People like Jordan Kerner, Raja Gosnell or Zuck and Franz's dads (we don't even have their full names), I don't think are famous or well-known people. They aren't even on this celebrity list.

When I was creating the list I added there all on this thread, although I don't think they are all celebrities. But then I realized that if we keep adding there also non-celebrities the list would become very large and useless to many people.

But I made the list public so you guys can decide who you think is a celebrity or not. But I wish we were adding people with at least one reference.

Added Cedric Antonio Kyles to the list.

Mr. Spielberg is famous, bit not famous enough to get his first name right in the list: it's Steven, not Stephen

Hmmm, which options did he order?

"I got a lot of cars. The latest is the Tesla S Performance, which is kind of like a spaceship. It has Internet (with) screens everywhere – Netflix, Spotify, Pandora. I get like 300 miles without having to give it another charge. But I got a lot of cars. I got the Phantom, Denali, a Ford that is all hot-rodded out. I got a bunch of cars, man."

Well whoever makes the list can do what they want. The old Roadster celebrity list was just posts on a thread here on TMC without editing based on their Q rating or anything. And IMDB may not be an indicator of celebrity but there are a lot of really nice people there. ;-)

Is the pink wrapped Model S good enough reference for the Google guys?

Start a second list that is not open to so much judgment. I say if someone on TMC thinks someone should be on it, they're on it. So what if it gets too big. The notion that it is not useful if too big begs the question ... what is the use if it is not too big? Isn't this just supposed to be for fun? :)
