Wiki Model S Delivery Update

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I got a call from Tesla today and we moved the delivery up 1 day; I pick up the car tomorrow at 1600 PDT.
Picked up the car today. Seemed perfect other than a tiny scratch on the rear bumper cover - buffed out with a little rubbing compound.

Here’s a couple of pictures.

Fun fact - turning the first corner was an adventure, with my hand grabbing for the wheel that wasn’t there. The next corner went a lot better.

Does anyone have any experience with the...

Adaptive Front Lighting System ?

I can't find anything that indicates it is working... Or if I even have it. Car built on 8/22/22
The cars transitioned to the new lights months ago, though so far as I know, they don't do anything special yet.

Well, mine is special. It has a significant notch in the left side pattern that Tesla says belongs there. Which isn't possible for them to know since they never saw it at night, when it shows up.

From what I've heard, the US DOT hasn't approved dynamic lighting systems yet (although I haven't heard any updates in a while on this - could be wrong), despite a number of (European) manufacturers as well as Tesla now including it with their cars, so it's disabled for the time being. Whenever it's approved, it'll show up in a software update.

In classic Tesla fashion, I imagine the first few versions of it will be not quite as good as the static headlights and the forum will be full of people complaining (although you'll have an option to turn the auto feature off, most likely). Then, through a few more updates, the headlights will improve to the point where they're clearly better than the originals.

As far as I have know that notch is correct and is intended to protect drivers in the opposing lane, even while in motion. Months ago someone published an article here on Sylvania's new headlight system that reads the traffic and adjusts that notch to cover the opposing traffic. Apparently, Tesla has not turned this feature on... ?
So far, I am not very impressed with these "new" lights. Manual High beam actuation is ridiculous requiring you to hold down the button until the little timer is finished on the dash screen, and then lift your thumb. Auto high beam is slow to react to oncoming traffic and is delayed to go back to high beam after traffic has passed. Yes, I have been flashed back from other drivers until I adjusted my headlights down from factory setting by four clicks of the scroll wheel.
So far, my 2014 BMW with it's Xenon headlights beats my new Tesla hands down. Smooth pattern with a good cut off with good Auto dimming and back to high beam in half the time of my MS.. I sure hope Tesla performs an update to make all this silly headlight actuation go away and give us the full technology Sylvania intended...

I know that kind of pattern. That's not what I have, and you can see in the photo below. The left-most notch is what I believe is not supposed to be there. The one just to the right, is one of two shutters you can see if you pull up to a wall and view the pattern. The longer one, doesn't show up when you pull up to a wall. I'd be interested to know if others have this same long notch.

Does anyone know if they are still shipping all model S's with the front license plate attached or did they stop that?
Picked up on 8/29 and it was still on. The delivery staff said that they’re legally required to have it on. Something about the car being crash tested with it on, so they have to install it before delivery.

This is one of my bigger fears these days as an owner now. Seems like these failures are somewhat rare but there also seems to be no rhyme or reason when or how they fail. If Tesla could be more consistent(quicker) with repairs and service it would be less scary, but I have seen some waiting a month for repairs. Fingers crossed we never encounter it.
Yes, I think this was a one-off and we actually own four '22 MS's--this is the only one that's left us stranded.

I think you'll be fine, especially if you remember this: the more you can avoid Tesla "service," the better.

Can confirm the same and was told the same when taking delivery. They also refused to take it off because they are legally not allowed to. The delivery specialist I was working with hypothesized that someone at Tesla corporate/Fremont forgot to take it off for the official NHTSA crash test day and they were stuck with having to deliver them all that way now. Smh…🤦‍♂️ Models 3, Y, and X do not have the front plate bracket on at delivery.

It’s such a weird thing too. When I got my Model 3 last year, I was happy to see that the front license plate frame was in the trunk.

At least the license plate frame’s easy to take off. Just need a wrench, some wire, goo gone, and a few minutes.
