Model Y bumpy ride "Rear Spring replacement"

2022 Model Y - Extremely surprised by the shock absorption capacity, the ride was extremely uncomfortable. My other 10 year old SUV (Honda Pilot) absorbs the same road bumps really well. Tire Pressure on Model Y was 41PSI on delivery.

Took the car to the service center, they tried to convince me that it is due to the "sporty" nature of the vehicle. I took a ride on the service car which was a little better (Tire pressure 38PSI). The Technician came out with his analysis of replacing the "rear springs (softer version) with a different revision part". Neither the technician nor the Service Center Manager could explain what could be going wrong on a brand new car.. Manager explanation was "Softer springs would help for folks who may not like the sportier feel of Model Y"

I know there are other similar thread mostly for 2020 Model.. Surprised folks continue to have same issues and Tesla has not taken any actions yet.. Would like to hear from others and if anyone also got the spring replacement from Tesla, did it work ?

Model Y suspension absolutely sucks. There are numerous threads on it and no fix available from Tesla.

You will have to go aftermarket if it is truly an issue for you. Otherwise start looking at other vehicles.
 
I think it all depends on what you are used to. I just came from a BMW 335i M Sport (2009) and think that my Y feels very similar. It is not as refined as some friends Audi A4/Q5 that i have driven but i find it compliant. I had a Pilot for a short while as a company car and thought it drove like a boat and made me motion sick. Long story short, i don't believe that any thing is wrong with it, but it isn't tuned to the comfort end of the spectrum, that is for sure.

There's a disconnect here. Can a Honda Pilot do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds? Can the Pilot cover the 1/4 mile in 12.4 seconds? Can the Pilot nail down .88g on the skidpad?? All that performance comes with a suspension able to control all that weight. The Y is never going to turn into a an Accord or insert whatever boat.

That said, the suspension will soften up to some degree after a few K miles. However as I wrote it's never gonna be a plush ride so it's kind of odd that you would have that expectation since you bought the car.

Both a tire and shock specialist and the Tesla dealership say the same thing - it is the nature of the car. I just bought this Y and want to get rid of it as soon as possible. It is not half the car that the S was and it shows that their only mission is to make and sell second rate cars.
Please warn people that this is a very poorly designed car.

Odd I drive with a cup of coffee in the Y every morning and have yet to spill a drop. True my area doesn’t have cobblestone streets but it’s not nearly as horrific as you make it out to be. Drives pretty darn well actually.

That’s another major problem with these vehicles. Inconsistency in manufacturing.

My Model Y was the worst ride I’ve ever had. Yet some people claim they are fine.

Either they live in very flat areas with nicely paved roads or Tesla still cannot churn out a reliable product. Either way; not a good look for the company.

Or the expectations of users are drastically different. No it doesn’t ride like a Buick Roadmaster but it also is not like a tank. Bottom line yes it has a performance type suspension which some assume by the price should be a cushy luxury ride. I drove a Honda Insight gen1, the Y is practically a Rolls Royce by comparison.

I think it would help for any comment to mention:

- the Model Y version (LR or P),
- the wheel size (19", 20", 21"),
- tire size if not the OEM, and
- tire model and pressure...

Note: You are comparing the Model S which has air suspension with the Model Y which has coils. So what did you expected?

Some owners did installed an after market air suspension on the Model 3 and Y, and this improved a lot the ride.
I wich Tesla would provide sush upgrade, but this would cannibalize the Model S and X sales.

Beside driving above potholes, can you comment how is the driving like on curvy roads..., Auto Pilot or FSD usage..,
long trips driving confort..., power train efficiency..., and what other cars (EV or ICE) your had experience with or would recommend?
 
All, The ride on my Model Y has improved a lot. There are 2 changes I did, first was to get the tire pressure reduced to 38psi on all 4 tires. I wouldn’t say that helped a lot

Secondly, took a test drive in another Model Y (service car that had been driven few thousand miles). To my amazement the ride was much smoother and I could immediately feel that the bumps were better absorbed. I was recommended by the technician to have softer springs in the rear suspension to which I reluctantly agreed (didn’t had other option), please see the attached part # in the screenshot. I must say there is a drastic improvement after the replacement and I do not crib about the ride anymore :)

I wonder if this is a general revision change or if they just swapped the parts with the same ones.

There have been two versions of springs for quite some time, the A rev and the B rev which I believe is the lower/harder spring for the MYP.

C revision description says nothing about being "softer" in any parts database I looked at and appears to be a part available for order for some time so I wonder if they've switched over to this part sometime in the last six months or so.
 
Wow - this is amazing to hear. I have a very early VIN 9xxx, and if these are in fact softer springs, I'd purchase them in a second for any improvement, even marginal. To know you got them for free is great but 2 years into ownership, I can't see Tesla replacing them for free for me :-(

The speed at which a car can accelerate is not related to how the suspension is tuned or dampened. A car can be comfortable AND go really fast. Legacy manufacturers have been doing it for years now and with their sports cars to boot. The R8 V10 is so comfortable to drive day to day, you forget you're in a sports car. The 991 911 is probably the best daily sports car out there. A car can be comfortable AND have good handling characteristics at the same time.

The truth is, the Model Y's suspension has zero dampening and abysmal body control.It's just poorly thought out. Significant room for growth here.

While they're at it, please fix the abysmal turning circle.

Agreed...and honestly, the number of people really driving these things like a race car are in the minority....It makes more sense for the car to be made for the majority and if you want that stiffer suspension, go ahead and change it. Or have a better design and give it that sporty yet softer feel...German cars seem to have figured that out...

Turning Radius is poor..some of that has to do w/ the wheelbase I think..but some of it isn't....Definitely should be better for a car of its moderate size..

Not true at all. There is no comfortable cushy suspension super cars or fast sporty cars. Try the "Moose Test" with cushy suspension cars and compare that with sport suspension sport(y) cars.

If MY has zero damping you will be bouncing forever. You are trying to compare the EV suv/cuv with 911 or R8 with adjustable suspension with $200k plus price tags? LOL

Just get a Prius and be bored.

911/R8 is better DD than MY is just laughable. =)
