No. As of last September 2019, Tesla has to install them in at least 50% of their newly built vehicles. By September 2020, they have to install them in 100% of their new vehicles.

There's no requirement to add them to previously built vehicles.

We can see that our Y has the wiring for the speaker but there's no speaker in ours.

Would you mind posting a picture? I’m curious how Tesla secures the wiring (if at all) when a speaker isn’t installed. Thanks!

We have it on video. I'll see if I can grab a snapshot so that we don't have to remove the frunk again.

I know I don't have a speaker because my cable was hanging out of the wheel well vin 10xx. Roadside came and clipped it into place.

our model y doesn't have. I know for sure as the plug was hanging out of the lower brake vent. so I taped it back in place. but I do know they had a certain % they had to have the noise maker in. I think it was 50%. which the model 3 should have taken care of. now the law is it has to be in all of them I think or a higher amount. it is easy to remove if you want to.

The PWS audio is pretty noticeable to pedestrians (by design) and can be heard inside the car if your windows are rolled down. The sound is enabled when the car is traveling less than about 19 mph, otherwise, it's silent. Here's a video that includes Model 3 PWS sounds at various speeds in forward and reverse, both from inside and outside the car. Note the PWS audio changes volume and pitch depending on the direction and speed of the car.

Thanks for the helpful video! I’m not keen on the sound. I’d be very willing to pay for custom tones like KITT or the Jetsons, etc. I wonder if disconnecting the speaker triggers a warning message?

I don’t disagree with having PWS. I just don’t like this one, especially after Elon got my hopes up that the sound would be customizable, eg coconuts from Monty Python.

I found the wire hanging down in the passenger front wheel well. I'm assuming that's the speaker...is there a mount clip to put it up or is it duct tape time until service?
