OEM CCS adapter now available to order in North America, Retrofit for older cars coming in 2023

Why, if Tesla is selling CCS1 adaptors in the US do they not do upgrades on older model (May 2020) Tesla Model 3s? And... does anyone have any more specific info on when Tesla will do the retrofit than just 'early 2023'? Or where in north America that it is doing so now?
Because it would require new electronics which is tightly integrated into a very large and complex board.

In general, auto makers don't provide upgrades for new functionality between model years. Tesla has done it sparingly in the past (most notably actually developing a new battery pack for the original Roadster as a thank you for early Tesla customers), but they are under no obligation to continuing doing it in the future. Ask Apple about upgrades...

Our 2021 AWD LR is not able to use the connector. When, if ever, will Tesla enable our car?can't get answer from Tesla..
Why do you think it is a matter of "enabling"? Do you know if your car has the right electronics for it? It just might not be compatible.

Yes, you need to have "CCS Adapter support: Enabled" show up on the software page of your screen when you click the "Additional Vehicle Info" link... If it's not enabled, then you'll need a charge port controller board upgrade from Tesla...There should be an item about this in the Tesla app on the page with this vehicle. It may say something like "this upgrade is not yet available, etc."...

Is Tesla performing charge port controller board upgrades?

Several of us on the forum have done this upgrade ourselves by ordering the new and upgraded charge port controller module, but it's a bit of an effort to go that route (and you need to purchase the board from a service center - which may not have it in stock)...For non DIY folks, it would just be easier to wait for Tesla to do the upgrades. Should be soon...

Not that I've heard yet. But several folks on the forum have done this upgrade ourselves by ordering the charge port controller board from Tesla and installing it. You have to re-install the car's software afterwards so it will pick up the new controller, and the service tech was nice enough to kick off the software update at the time when I bought the board so I could accept it and complete it after installing the board (although you could use Service Mode to kick it off yourself)... I've upgrade a recent Model Y this way and an older Model 3 this way and it wasn't too hard (just some disassembly in the trunk to get to the charge port controller board)...

Is there really a market for this in the US? I have a hard time imagining a Tesla owner actually wanting to use non-Tesla fast DC charging.

Highly unreliable, various different apps to install, they don't show up on the in-car navigation. Not to mention that the CCS connector only looks right in the hand of Andre the Giant.
There are in fact some of us who want this, because Tesla by and large only builds Superchargers within spitting distance of Interstates in the space between New York and California (maybe a slight exaggeration, but you get my point). And contrary to popular belief, there are Americans who live in those places.

There is one (1) Supercharger site in the 500 mile stretch through Idaho between Boise and where my kid lives in central Washington (I am on the way, so only 400 miles for me). Thousands of feet of elevation change up and down multiple times, high winds, winter conditions. Right now there is a 50 kW level 3 charger at a Tribe Casino halfway along the way with two spots. CCS1 and CHAdeMO. So, yes, there's a market for the millions of people who wish to travel through the state with EVs.

So yes, my friend, anyone who wants to leave the coasts may be in the market. 🍻

I did the retrofit on my 2018 M3 and just ordered the connector direct from US tesla site. I have another I got online from the Korea site (Harumio, I believe), but the Electrify America I tried it on did not seem to work. I'm hoping the US tesla site is more amenable. Some of the placement of the CCS chargers are not friendly to where Tesla charge ports are located.

It shouldn’t matter what CCS adapter you buy. All the new ones are just passive electrical connections plus a thermal sensor. Either it works or it doesn’t unless there’s something damaged. EA sucks so I’m not surprised you couldn’t charge. I’ve been having a lot of troubles with unreliable CCS chargers too. People pulling up in other brands (Kia, Ford, VW) aren’t able to charge either.

Wifey and I do a twice a year AZ~Cape Cod~AZ (+ or - 3,000 miles each way). We have used the EA system quite a few times since first getting our adapter (our June trip was the first time we used it, our end of August trip the second). I only use EA stations which are quite close to SC stations. Generally much less expensive and I like accessing Walmart!! (Really. Clean bathrooms and you can buy ANYTHING you might desire there.)

Anyway, it's fun to scandalize the DCFC users when I pull up in our model Y!

Bet you’re not going to like it when you’re waiting for that Nissan Leaf to finish charging at your SC.

Adapter price down to $175 (US). Also out of stock.

I bought the adapter when they dropped to $175. It allowed me to because we have a 2022 Model X. Now I want to see what the real cost is for my 2018 Model 3 Performance, because I don't need another adapter but just the car modification. If it's a rip off, I'll do it myself as it appears pretty straightforward.

It will likely be the same as for the S&X; $450 including the adapter. (So, $275 for the parts and labor to retrofit the actual vehicle.)

They probably won't offer a retrofit only, without an adapter, service as the adapter comes bundled in the same box as the retrofit parts.

We're kind of in the same boat. We imported an adapter from South Korea to share with our 2022 S & X. We still have a 2017 S as well but don't need another adapter. Another thread shows they were quoted $290 for just the retrofit without the adapter.

They are now open to CCS drivers:
