Ontario EV Rebates Cancelled July 11, 2018

We have to understand that this is not Tesla’s fault. We should all reach out to our MPP and make our voices heard, tweet Ford Nation and let everyone know how unfair this is. If there is enough noise, maybe they will change this just like he deadline for home reno rebates was extended for those who already have a contract.

Yeah, I think this might be the only path forward.

Problem is, that had nothing against the contractors and it was probably as much them complaining as it was people. In this case if it's really true that it's been killed off because it's Tesla, I can't see any amount of backlash changing.

Follow the money. The Ontario auto industry is likely a huge supporter. He's probably playing to their desire to screw Tesla.

If Ford can claim the CEO of Hydro retired for $400k in benefits package when in reality that allowed him to take ~$9M in stock cashout I think that says a lot about the nightmare we might be enduring for the next 4 years.

I know that even if I take a refund, I'll eventually buy Tesla even more than ever now.

taking tinfoil hat off :)

I think that's a bit of a leap to think they don't have enough money but it does raise an interesting point. I'm sure they could shuffle funds around to make it seem like there was no money if they really wanted to...as they go line by line through the books. In which case perhaps it's all futile already.

It's not a huge issue if Tesla takes the higher ground and credits back everyone affected but hopefully someone will flush out what really went on in back rooms. It wouldn't be the first time Tesla was subject to an attack and this one seems rather orchestrated as we see it playing out.

If I could swing it, I'd still buy an AWD and delusional or not, would drive with a smile every day feeling I was sticking it to the man :)

Just spoke to Tesla rep. He said they’ve now communicated with the government and the rebate is revoked for all model 3 reservation holders regardless of whether or not you booked before the 11th because the basically tried to screw over Tesla with the language and have it be confusing to avoid backlash. So no rebate. The ministry doesn’t even know when you call them!!
So they told you clearly, that your not getting a rebate on your car. Did a rep tell you or someone with authority? Stop putting up stuff without actually evidence to support.

Thanks

I had spoke to a supervisor at HQ and he had informed me that they were still in talks with mto, and he would get back to me in a couple of days. They did tell him it should be fine but he didn’t want to say anything until he was 100% sure. What I noticed about some of the users on this forum is that they get a kick from trying to burst others hopes. I spoke to the supervisor around 6 pm today. So everyone sit tight until this is cleared up!

Clearly, it's not over till there is official word and I don't think we have that quite yet. I'm sure it will go quick at this point, perhaps even on Friday. As has been mentioned, I'm sure there are many people working behind the scenes to get it all definitively sorted out. It's fun to speculate but there's not much more to say now but to wait for an official statement.

Official word? Electric vehicles incentive program

July 11, 2018

On July 3, 2018, Ontario cancelled the cap and trade program as part of its commitment to bring gas prices down by 10 cents a litre and help reduce costs for Ontario families and businesses by $1.9 billion dollars per year.

Given the Electric and Hydrogen Vehicle Incentive Program and the Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Programs are funded through cap-and-trade proceeds, these programs are cancelled.

Applications will be accepted from dealerships, car owners or prospective car owners only if one of the following conditions has been met:

  • Eligible vehicles that have been delivered to consumers, registered, and plated on or before July 11 will receive the incentive.
  • Inventory that dealers have on lots or orders made by dealerships with manufacturers on or before July 11, will also be honoured for the incentive provided that the vehicle is delivered to consumers, registered, and plated by September 10.
In addition, the Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program is cancelled effective July 11. Charging stations purchased and/or installed before this date will be eligible to receive incentives if the application is submitted within 60 days of July 11.

That's pretty official.

The official statement has been sent via email and as it stands Tesla is not eligible.
Here is to hope that Tesla is still reaching out the MTO to try and rectify this.

I also ended up calling Tesla sales reps in Ontario. They concurred what has been said earlier in this thread. Apparently they received some communication from government officials informing them that orders direct from manufacturer will not be honoured.

This is so frustrating. Singling out one manufacturer. Seems like all we can do at this point is write to our local MPPs and ask why they are making this distinction. “Because” is not a good enough answer.
