Picking up this weekend. Still No VIN?

That’s also not true. State law in my state and I’m sure others requires them to confirm you have proof of insurance before you take possession.

Doesn’t have to be on the Tesla as your existing policy will provide grace coverage of a new purchase for at least a week or two.

Proof of liability coverage, yes. Proof of collision/comprehensive on the vehicle you're purchasing? Nope. That's only if the lender requires them to verify that before releasing funds.

And they verify that because the grace period you mentioned only happens if you already have collision/comp coverage on another vehicle. If you own your vehicle outright and have liability only, you don't automatically get collision/comp on the new vehicle. The grace period effectively provides the "best" level of coverage that you have on any vehicle on your policy to the new vehicle.

My current policy is not full coverage. I sold my volt and in driving my old truck while I wait for the 3. I need a policy on the 3 before I can pick it up.

Already spoke to my agent said to call m-f once I get the vin. Maybe I'll call him and see if there is an after hours way to do it, but I know for sure the loan office will be closed anyways.

Was emailed midday on Monday that I could take delivery this Friday. Still no VIN, less than 36 hours away. Starting to think I’m getting delayed. I’m a huge Tesla fan, I can look past this, but it’s a terrible look, they need to get this figured out now. Pissing off so many people!

Tesla doesn't understand state laws at all, and has failed to look them up even though they've had years to do so. It's pathetic.

In NY, you don't have to have insurance before taking possession of the car, *which is obviously correct*. You have to take possession of the car before getting it insured because it's illegal to insure something you don't own.

Rather logically, you have to have insurance before *registering* the car. So, without insurance, you can have a *titled*, unregistered car which you can only drive on private property.

The order is title -> insurance -> registration. (Yes, they're usually done on the same day, but if they're not, that's the order.)

Tesla still doesn't seem to understand this.

Does if a Tesla's your first car. They won't give you a car insurance policy with no car; never seen an insurance company which would do that.

If I am delayed I am delayed, but I have already planned my next two weekends around this date. They could at least let me know.

I called tesla they said they are only required to give out the vin within 72 hours of delivery. Looks like I'm not going to be able to pickup the car unless something miraculous happens tomorrow morning.

/not an insurance agent/attorney/nor do i play one on TV

My agent told me that CA law mandates insurance companies extend like coverage for 30 days for purchases of new automobiles. I.e. if you have full coverage on your current car, you'll have that on your new car. You have 30 days to officially add the new car to the policy. I.e. get a free month of insurance.

You temporarily put full coverage on your truck today. Pick up the Tesla. Add it when you feel comfortable. As always, check with your agent for specific guidance.

as far as your VIN goes, call the local store(s) and give them your RN. They should be able to tell you your VIN.

I'm sad to report you're not getting your car this weekend, man. I'm in the same boat, no VIN with a delivery scheduled for Saturday. I confirmed with about six Tesla employees yesterday and today that if I don't have a VIN by now, the car basically doesn't exist and I should be getting a call tomorrow to reschedule delivery. I'm sure you will be, too.

Ridiculous process.

Similar story for me, the car never existed. Now a delivery date email doesn't even mean you have a car. In fairness, they tried to find another car available with my config or similar enough, but no luck, so it’s like it never happened. Wouldn’t bother me so much, but I spent a lot of time getting a loan setup and clearing my schedule only to still have no end in sight. Basically, please call back in 2 weeks. No new delivery date, just back in the cue.

Back in the days with the Model S they custom made a car specifically for you; assume they are still doing that. You could pretty much follow it's progress. With the Model 3 being produced as fast as they are in the quantity they are they are just batched configured and VINs assigned to people right before delivery in case there's a problem with the car or in the delivery chain they can make adjustments on the fly. In some ways this should be easier but as we are seeing not really. I know one of the OAs from our MS got moved over to the factory Delivery Center to help out just recently. Sure they are trying to get as many hands on deck as possible.

In my experience they are lazy about updating the web site data, even if the car is waiting for you.

For all of you with busted delivery dates - -were you asked to confirm all final details with a specialist? Still have edit button?

Yes, I had everything confirmed, had delivery date and time, was waiting on contract and VIN. 24 hours before delivery I was given the option to "upgrade" to 19" wheels for $1500 and keep my delivery date. I declined, if I had wanted 19"s that's what I would have configured! Tough decision because obviously I would have liked to have my car in 17 mins (when my appt. would have been).
