So, what happens if you're out of town when your car is ready for delivery?

I travel a fair amount. When my much-awaited invite comes, I will know all my travel plans for the next few months, but apparently people are told when they order that delivery will be in "about 4 weeks" and then at some point they'll be notified "Your car is ready."

Will Tesla be willing to hold off delivery for a few weeks if the buyer is out of town? Or at time of ordering can the buyer specify delivery black-out dates? I.e., "I will be gone on these dates" and unable to take delivery.

I cannot change my travel dates. They are set months in advance. Sometimes a year or more in advance. But with such a vague delivery window as "about 4 weeks," and we all know how that can change, especially with Tesla (top quality cars, seldom on time) I'm starting to wonder about this.

And while I'm on the topic, I am going nuts waiting for that invite. I'm not in CA but my window is December to February, IOW any time in the next 2 1/2 months. Or maybe June if there are more delays. o_O

I was out of town when my Model S was ready. My Delivery Specialist worked with me to schedule a delivery date when it was convenient for me. I know Tesla will be dealing with a lot more volume now with Model 3, but surely they'll still have some flexibility.

Your delivery specialist will work with you in scheduling a date. Don't worry.

Thanks!

Nope, if you are not available to pickup your car, you are moved to the back of the line and someone else gets your car.

Ha, ha.

From what I understood from my DS, you have a one week window to pick it up once it is at the SC.

I won't be picking it up. There's no SC in Spokane, just a Ranger who makes house calls. I'll be having it delivered.

Hope so. I'll be gone for 3 weeks in January/February (smack dab in my delivery estimate window of Dec - Feb). And if it gets delayed into summer (which would disappoint but not surprise me) I'll be gone for six weeks. I'm retired, and old, and making the most of the few years I have left of being healthy enough to be active.

Hmmmm. That might not be enough, depending on the actual dates.
Then sorry, you lose, and the car immediately gets transferred to me. Go ahead...read it...it's in your contract. That fine print called the Dan Clause. "All owners unable to meet the delivery date as specified by Tesla immediately surrender their car to Dan Detweiler...at no additional cost to said Detweiler". LOL!

Since you are in the Northwest, you could check your schedule as delivery gets closer, and either try pick it up early in Fremont, or schedule it for Fremont, and have at least a few days up to a week delay to get it delivered up in the Northwest.

I'm not going to drive the car from Fremont to Spokane. From the tone of the posts in the CA Invite Poll thread, it sounds as though people place their order on line, and then get no information on delivery date other than "about 4 weeks." I'll probably just have to place my order at a time when I will be at home four weeks later. So if I get the invite two weeks before a 3-week trip I'll probably just have to wait a week more to place the order. Shouldn't be too bad, unless it gets delayed to summer, when I have a 6-week trip. My "estimate" is Dec-Feb, but I'm actually expecting June.

At least I know my travel schedule months in advance.

You really need to discuss this with Tesla, once you get your configuration invitation, perhaps before you accept your Purchase Agreement. Talk to your sales person (Owner Advisor) or your DS (Delivery Specialist) once you have one assigned to you. Give them your travel schedule, see if they can work around it. Normally you have one week to take the delivery from the time the car is ready to be delivered. Here is a quote from my Model S Purchase Agreement:

Delivery.
If you are picking up your Vehicle in a state where we are licensed to sell the Vehicle, we will notify you of when we expect your Vehicle to be ready for delivery at your local Tesla Delivery Center, or other location as we may agree to. You agree to schedule and take delivery of your Vehicle within one week of this date. If you are unable to take delivery within the specified period, your Vehicle may be made available for sale to other customers.
If you wish to pick up your Vehicle in a state where we are not licensed to sell the Vehicle, or if you and Tesla otherwise agree, Tesla will, on your behalf, coordinate the shipment of your Vehicle to you from our factory in California or another state where we are licensed to sell the Vehicle. In such a case, you agree that this is a shipment contract under which Tesla will coordinate the shipping of the Vehicle to you via a third-party common carrier. You agree that delivery of the Vehicle, including the transfer of title and risk of loss to you, will occur at the time your Vehicle is loaded onto the common carrier’s transport (i.e., FOB shipping point). The carrier will insure your Vehicle while in transit and you will be the beneficiary of any claims for damage to the Vehicle or losses occurring while the Vehicle is in the possession of a common carrier.

Resign. Call in sick and tell them you need to come home. Tell them you need to be present at a very important delivery in your life, but dont tell them what the delivery consists of.

I'm not flying home from my vacation in Maui just to take delivery on a damn car. Even this car. But I will postpone my order (and let some of you slip in ahead of me) if the invite comes when I'm going to be away 4 weeks later. Or whatever length of time seems to be what they're saying when my invite comes.

I will also make an attempt to contact them (will they talk to you between the time your invite comes and the time you order?) because it seems very unlikely they would say "We can't tell you your delivery date until you order but you must be home during our specified window, which we won't tell you until you order." Tesla just isn't going to be that unreasonable. As long as they can give me a delivery window before I order I can place my order when my delivery window will fall during times I'm at home. I'm actually home more than I'm away, but I'm away a lot, especially this spring and summer: I'm making up for travel time lost after I broke my arm a year and a half ago and could not travel for ten months. Also trying to get in as much travel as I can before I'm too feeble or sick or just plain too old.
