Speed Assist and Lane Departure Warning

All:

I drove past the Scottsdale SC today and scoped out the inventory of cars that had just been dropped off but not yet prepped for delivery. Out of about six cars I could see, only two had the driver assist features described here. Their VINs were 51xxx and 56xxx. None of the others (with VINs between the former) showed evidence of the driver assist features.

AmpedRealtor: I did take a photo of what appears to be a new sensor near the edge of the wheel well (similar to the parking sensors, but directed to the sides of the vehicle) that is located on all four sides. See the attached photo. Perhaps this is for the blind spot warning. There was nothing unusual mounted on the mirrors.

I have a dog in this fight, as my S should be rolling off the truck in the next few days. Hope that I win this lottery!

Awesome thank you for the photo!

So... what about those who paid $500 for parking sensors but who haven't taken delivery of their vehicle? Are we looking at the the beginnings of driversafety-gate?

I'm one of those… paid for parking sensors, but car (currently ;)) slated for December delivery.

But, I don't mind about paying for the sensors, especially if I get this other new stuff for free! :)

I wonder how far behind blind-spot warning and ACC could be? I'd love to get those!

I bet if I at least have the new hardware (camera and/or radar), that the other driver-assist features could probably be done via software update! What do you think?

This is the same arrangement that my current car has, which features blind spot detection and active park assist (i.e. automatic parallel parking). The rear side sensors are the ones that would be used for blind spot assist. The front ones simply allow for better sensor coverage of the corners when parking. There had been some discussion before where Tesla had mentioned park assist being added (separate from parking sensors), but it never came to fruition and most assumed it was just a duplicate reference to the parking sensors.

I still don't understand why they would put all these sensors on cars without prior knowledge. The features carry too much value to be added to the base configuration of the car. Tesla must be planning something big, but isn't talking just yet.

I wonder how this will affect non-drilled front license plate installs… ;).

Yes. There's a sensor in the middle of the front bumper, too.

The hardware looks exactly like what @AmpedRealtor shared via post #72 earlier in this thread (great catch!); much clearer photos.

I'm somehow already over an image upload quota; here's a link to a photo showing the sensor in my car:

It definitely looks like a radar sensor. I could see a few markings but couldn't get a clear part number.

I'm sure these are different but http://www.bosch-automotivetechnolo...l_CO_PC_Driver-Assistance_512.html?compId=79# look similar.

The beauty of Tesla is that much can be done via software. As long as the sensors are there, Tesla will continue to improve the software and add features. The screens that were shown in this thread is likely just part of the first round. Given the sensor in the grill plus the new fender sensors, it's reasonable to assume that ACC, blind spot, and collision avoidance are coming next. The screens shown only utilize the camera sensor in the windshield and not the rest.

Wow! Thanks for the info timf! That is awesome that the new side sensors could imply blind spot assist, and maybe more… would be *very* useful on the crazy DC beltway. ;)

@DavidN I don't think the parking sensors themselves cost much (i.e. http://www.amazon.com/XD-066-Display-Reverse-Parking-Sensors/dp/B0055XCLK4 ). Depending on the sensor that's in the rear view mirror (Mobileye??) and it's features maybe they are ~$100 in material costs altogether. I'd speculate the main cost being the R&D that went into the software/integration. And retrofitting would be a huge hassle because there would have to be new/modified bumpers, windshield, wire harnesses, etc.

Adaptive cruise control is the one feature on my current car I'm going to really miss.

To clarify my earlier post, the two cars that I reported on above had the full suite of sensors, or at least the places to mount them, that were pictured earlier in this thread (camera above the rear view mirror, apparent radar-type sensor under the nosecone, and side-facing proximity sensors at all four wheel wells).

I'm set for a factory delivery this Sunday, I've sent an email to my delivery specialist. I'll let you guys know what I find out. I would LOVE these features. I paid for the parking sensors and I have the tech package. So if it's a part of any of those two options lists in theory I should get it if it's available. My VIN is 56XXX. And by "Should" I mean if they're going to group those features into anything it would be one of those two packages right? Unless they're making a safety package... but you would have to opt in or out of it right?

Good luck offset! I hope you get 'em :).

I also have a 56XXX VIN…

With my S85 not being delivered until December, I'd say I have a pretty good chance of having all this new stuff… looking forward to it very much!

I love Tesla (and SpaceX and pretty much everything that Elon says and does)! :)… thrilled to be part of the revolution. This is definitely the most excited I've ever been about a car… but boy… seeing things like the Infinite Mile Warranty and other great stuff being added all the time… all I can say is great job Tesla and keep it up!!!

Found this article, it has some interesting screen shots of what shows up on the monitor.

Just got off the phone with my DS. I'm happy to say that I will have it on my car. It's a new feature that was introduced with a couple of sensors that have been added to the front of the car as most of you have pointed out.

Guess this is another reason to like Tesla... The honor of just including items to peoples cars in hopes that we will all be brand ambassadors. I guess all is good in the world as we are all pretty much a collective marketing department for Tesla, and I'm fine with that!

Bravo Tesla, B-R-A-V-O:cool:

Do you remember the color of the 56xxx one? Blue hopefully? My car is supposedly at the Scottsdale SC right now (I take delivery tomorrow or Friday) and these new features have me even more excited about my car than I already was.

This definitely is happening. I just talked to someone at HQ. I emailed them to see if they could help me with changing my wheel color. The new grey on grey wheels looks much better than the design center. First ones are delivering now so I finally saw them. Couldn't do it, but...

I asked him about these new features. He confirmed them. He only mentioned two features though:
lane drift detection, speed limit display
He said he did not know when they started implementing it or what cars would have it, but did figure that once they started it would be on every car from there on out.

Where are the new Teslas produced?

Good luck offset! I hope you get 'em :).

Does anyone of you know there the cars with these new options are produced? My car (551 VIN, delivery december) is in Queue for Production at Freemont California.
