Im suprised there isnt a third party add on by now. Shirley if its that simple and cheap someone would be selling millions of them by now?
Problem is rain sensors have never been perfect either. Not saying that the Tesla system is currently better, there are enough complaints out there to tell me that it's not consistent and there are issues. Like everything else Tesla have not settled for 'good enough' just because everyone else does and are trying to find a better way to do things.

I'm not sold yet that this particular experiment will work, though I'm encouraged in my case that my wipers have been overall very good, better than rain sensors in varying rain with the only issue I really have being the occasional dry wipe.

I think they will have to improve it considerably in respect to the consistency or they may finally settle on adding a rain sensor and just putting up with 'good enough'

An add on rain sensor would be easy enough, getting it powered and then integrated with the wipers would be the difficult part. Unless you like cords dangling everywhere like an Uber has 😂
Yeah there would be some smart cookie somewhere that could work it out. They have aftermarket stalks, yokes and knobs etc that control all kinds of things. Way above my pay grade haha.

The guys who do the S3XY buttons already have access to the wipers through the CAN Bus so I'm sure they could add it fairly easily to their system if they felt it worthwhile.

In your car, though, it is probably used to select the USB drive in your glovebox as the audio source instead of Spotify, radio, etc.

I figured it had something to do with the car's USB ports. Wasn't sure if the reference was for power, dashcam recording or audio etc.

So saying "switch to USB" is enough for the car to assume you want to play MP3's off the USB stick?

Barking up the wrong tree. Its clear that Tesla is cameras only. So within that constraint (depending on POV) a camera with a focal point on the windscreen is the most ideal solution. But that requires another camera for which there may or may not be an spare input
The reason they want to be "cameras only" is so they can re-use the same general-purpose hardware for lots of different things (autopilot/FSD, dashcam/sentry mode, park assist, auto wipers, adaptive headlights, etc). Adding an extra camera focussed on the windscreen just for rain detection would defeat the purpose. If they do decide they need to add specialised hardware just for rain sensing (I'm not saying they do - I actually think their current system works just about as well as the rain sensor in my previous car most of the time) the most sensible choice would be a cheap commodity rain sensor of the type that every other car uses.

Everyone is an "expert" and wants Tesla to take a different approach. As I said barking up the wrong tree - that's what Tesla is invested in

In other news, in drizzly Sydney last night, the wipers were excellent, instant startup as soon as car was put in D or R and appropriate variability in wiper speed . No interventions from me. (20.1) The speed camera location were properly posted on the screen.

They were okay. A bit slow at times and had to manually push the button. Better turning on again when exiting a tunnel than they used to be. Don’t forget that even old fashioned rain sensor cars have a sensitivity dial, which we don’t have, to account for different preferences between individuals.

Also, in the rain (and dark), I keep getting a message that Tesla vision park assist is degraded due to poor vision. Guess what, ultrasonic sensors weren’t bothered by the rain or the dark. Having said that, I prefer the Tesla vision overall. It’s just a shame they couldn’t combine the two sensor types.

Same here. Everything seems to be working again and no obvious downloads required.
