I should've qualified my statement.

These were all new products rather than upgraded versions of an existing product (such as the Osborne computer).

The advantage of announcing new products early is to gauge interest and get some commitment and cash upfront through pre-orders.

Lower price point vehicles intended to be produced on massive scale are in an extremely competitive segment. Everyone is keeping those designs close to the chest. Tesla's design will likely be unusual and there is no upside giving competitors an early look.

You're not alone in this issue. I've heard it a few times. My Tesla Doctor who used to work for Tesla service center suggested I do not get the lithium-ion whenever it's time to replace my 6-year-old 12-volt.
