Dear Mark,

I know you have been awaiting eagerly delivery of your Model S P85D. Unfortunately, the delivery date for your car is being delayed back and will be updated in your My Tesla account from June to August. The delay comes from the availability of a critical system for the right hand drive version of the dual motor Model S. We have explored all expediting options, but the timing above is the one we feel comfortable with to ensure that you receive a car which meets yours and our exacting quality standards.

I understand this is a disappointing news. Please be assured that we are at least as eager as you are to build and deliver your Tesla.

Please do not hesitate to contact your delivery experience specialist or sales advisor with any questions or concerns. We promise to do everything we can to keep you informed and up to date on the status of your Model S.

Thank you for your patience and continued support.

Best regards,

Yep received the same email. It seems like an odd explanation to me... What could be specific to a rhd dual motor that would be such a complex part to manufacture?

yes i agree. It would have to do with how the steering column passes by the front motor. Some genius figured it can pass by on the left, but it doesn't fit on the right... So they got to flip the front engine... Have the smaller inverter side on the same side as the steering column.... Just a guess... So it is back to the drawing board to manufacture a mirror image of the assymetrical front motor... Just a theory that fits.... And fits a little more than the existing front motor I'd say...

They don't tell us of course because we are only on a 'need to know' basis....some people might take the trouble to explain to their dog why it is getting desexed, but then the dog probably outranks electric car customers waiting on their purchase...

And this critical system issue could not have been foreseen? What about the RHD P85D test vehicles slated to arrive end of Q1?

Prepare yourselves. This will be the first of many delays. I've been through this for years. I'm betting not before 2016.

Check your email - it contains bad news.

Surely their CAD models would have made design issues like that obvious a long time ago. They would certainly have a comprehensive CAD model showing how all the parts interact.

I waited 4 full years after initially being told delivery in July 2014. (there were earlier dates but not as specific, like end 2013). IS Brown is even more expert on this subject. 5 years + and counting. Part of this is also the X which is vastly more critical to them than a few RHD D cars!!

Agreed Dborn, the Model X may be a factor in this.

Quite obviously there is something they are not telling us.

FIRST they tell us they are SOURING parts for our car.

THEN they tell us that our car is in the PRODUCTION QUEUE.

After stacks of waiting, they THEN TELL US that they are BACK TO SOURCING PARTS!!!

------
Do you reckon, to be truthful, the letter ought to have read something like:
-------

Dear Aussie Larikans,

Please understand that you are a really low priority to us. We are committed to fulfilling our local orders, and we are also busy with meeting the deadlines of Model X which is much more lucrative and exciting on a world stage than a couple of RHD dual vehicles destined for the arse end of the world.

But take heart, your deposits have been well used towards the fulfilment of those ambitious goals and that is very much respected by us.

Eventually, there will come a time when things will slow down for us, and we will then once again turn our minds towards the Aussie orders. Until that time, please enjoy multiple re-runs of Crocodile Dundee and Skippy.

Up Yours
The Tesla Team

Love your letter ZTrekus. I think it's probably quite accurate!
