I have just ordered a Y, LR Grey Turbine wheels. Black interior. I though it might be useful to share my experience looking into the alternatives.
I am currently a M3P owner, had the car 2 years, quite low mileage and loved every minute if it I know what I am getting into with Tesla. The Mrs' car is up for renewal (Volvo XC60 diesel - horrible) so we decided we were brave enough now to go 100% electric. Mrs doesn't love the Tesla, (thinks its showy) so was keen to get something else so I took her out to testdrive a q4 e-tron and an ID4.
It wasn't pretty, First of all if you think you can get a car immediately because there are a few floating around on autotrader think again. The Dealers are putting their demonstrators on to keep people interested but they wont let you have them until they can replace them and that will be March so unless you are very lucky there isn't much you can buy. Additionally due to the chip shortage you basically cant buy a German car with a reversing camera! or an etron with a Pano roof (does the roof open? is that why it needs a chip?) I really expected to be pretty impressed with the q4 e-tron and while it was pretty nice inside there was still plenty of piano black and cheap plastics in the rear. The headliner is dark grey so without the pano roof its surprisingly claustrophobic. I did like the heads up display and the cabin was very quiet.
The ID4 also failed to impress, cumbersome to drive, poorly equipped, even more Piano black and cheap plastics. Visibility is terrible, as tested by my dogs shadowing the car on the driveway and I couldnt see where they were.
But the abiding memory of both cars was slowness this was the midrange q4 (40) and the ID4 was "pro performance" and they both felt sluggish, especially on the motorway I am sure this is a deliberate choice by Audi to leave room for faster model. Shows they are not "all in" on EV's yet.
Finally neither VW or Audi wernt going to get me a car till March realistically
So after the test drives I sat down the Mrs for a heart to heart, reminded her about dog mode (dogs very important) looked up the better boot space, frunk, better software, sentry mode (very important) and we ordered the Y. Lots of people keep telling me the German competition is coming and I am not a fanboi I am open minded.... but with my own eyes and ears (and other senses) Tesla are still a long way ahead
PS the Y is a lot more expensive than either the E-tron or the ID4 we test drove. Guess you get what you pay for.
