Volkswagen announced a temporary halt to its production in Brazil, citing the market downturn as the main reason for such a decision.
In a statement released on Tuesday (27), the German automaker confirmed the stoppage of its activities in all units in the country. The government's incentive program, which grants discounts for cars valued at up to R$ 120,000, was not enough to keep production running smoothly.
In this context, employees at the affected plants will see the downtime deducted from their bank of hours. At the units in Taubaté (SP) – where the Polo Track and Novo Polo are produced – the interruption in the two production shifts will take place this week, following the hour bank regime.
However, the decision does not affect only the Taubaté factory. The Anchieta plant, in São Bernardo do Campo – responsible for manufacturing the Novo Virtus, Novo Polo, Nivus and Saveiro models – will also feel the impact of the interruption. There, the company requested a ten-day collective vacation for the two shifts starting on July 10th.
That same unit in São Bernardo do Campo is preparing for another ten-day interruption next month, indicating that the market downturn is leading Volkswagen to adopt more drastic measures.
The stoppage is not surprising, as the government has been going about its ramshackle ways trying to stimulate the automotive industry. The measure, however, shows that the strategies adopted did not help to neutralize the effects of market stagnation.
Volkswagen has given no indication of when production might resume, which raises more uncertainty about the future of Brazil's auto sector amid an already challenging economy.
