Yellow Border

Just adding another data point. Took delivery of an inventory Model S 100D on 6/14. Noticed the yellowing around the border while on the drive home from the service center. Didn't see it while going over the car because it can only really be seen when bright sunlight hits the MCU screen except along the vertical edges.

Contacted the delivery advisor as soon as I got home and she wrote me this:

In regard to the MCU I understand your concern however this would be considered a warranty repair. I spoke with our service team and they advised me that a fix is being developed for that issue and is expected to be released shortly. Proceed to make a service appointment on your mobile app and our service team will instruct you from there.

Take it for what you will.

Hi all,

Just following up on this (and didn't want to start a new thread). Following the advice of my delivery advisor, I made an appointment with my local service center to get on their radar that I was having the yellowing issue (with a car built in 1/2019 that I purchased as new inventory in 6/2019).

To my surprise, they called me back and told me that the fix for the screen yellowing issue is now being pilot tested and my car was selected to be the first one to have the fix done in my region because my car is so new and has the issue (not sure if I believe that but no complaints here). There is apparently a specialist who travels between service centers that is teaching each center how to do the fix.

I dropped my car off this morning so we will see. I asked when the fix will be available for everyone and they told me sometime between mid-August and September. They want all the service centers to have the equipment and be up to speed on how to do the fix properly.

Sure hope this is for real

I received basically the same information through the arbitration response. The Tesla lawyer claimed they have a limited numbers of tools they’re sharing and coordinating training amongst several locations (Richmond to Fairfax, VA in my case). He claimed that they might be ready to start performing UV applications in 30 days.

Important to note that a Tesla tech told me the UV treatment has only a temporary effect. He described an internal wiki page that details the effect and terms under which they’ll perform the UV service. Basically only while under warranty, and requires a service appointment in the shop (not mobile tech)

I have a MX and MS, both yellowed. I took the MS in for it, they told me the same thing.... then got a call later that day and they said "We just got the new screens in with the verified yellow border fix", the replace the screen that day (this was about 2 months ago at the time of this post).

Later I took my MX in for the same problem, this time the work order specified a "Healing" procedure was performed, what ever they did the yellow border is gone. Nonetheless, the new screen on the MS looks better to me (brighter, better contrast ratio, better color saturation), I would have preferred the new screen to be honest the MX which, even with the 'healing' does not have the same 'pop' as the MS.

Hi all,

Just picked up my car and indeed the yellowing has been repaired. The invoice states the following (for reference):

Concern: Customer States: "Yellowing of border on screen" Perform the screen yellow borders repair as per Field
Engineer.

Verified yellow board around touchscreen. Performed touchscreen repair procedure. Verified touchscreen no longer has
yellow border and is operating as designed.

Correction: Use Ultraviolet Light to Mitigate Yellow Border on Touchscreen

Pay Type: Goodwill - Service

Before and after pics attached.

Thank you for sharing the info, the screen looks great now.

Assuming your vehicle is still under warranty, this is interesting that they are filing this under the "Goodwill" category. They may be digging in with the stance of not being a warranty issue.

Also, they used the word mitigate, which means make less severe. I wonder if its a hedge against setting the expectation of a permanent fix.

Either way, I had my doubts Tesla actually would be able to come up with this UV fix, and it looks like they indeed may have come through here. They really mishandled the messaging throughout, but I give them a lot of credit for coming up with a fix that once seemed like a fairy tale.

I did find it interesting that they classified it as goodwill. The car is a 2019 and I've only owned it for about a month so definitely under warranty.

Regardless, whatever they did definitely worked. Now whether it is a temporary fix or a permanent one remains to be seen. Also I'd be interested in the out of warranty cost for this service as I would imagine it's pretty much just time and labor.

No wonder they aren't bothering to fit 'new' screens, it seems like they don't actually know how to make screens that don't have this happen (yet).

Tesla S/X screen for example not explicitly only automotive grade but is industrial/amusement/vehicle (IAV) grade. It's storage spec is -40C to +90C but operating spec is -20C to +85C. *F* They have had some issues with them. Norway is very popular with Tesla's and some Jan/Feb avg temps are -6C so good testing (Norway climate: average weather, temperature, precipitation, best time). I'm guessing this was changed with the Tesla 3 screen requirements that is their mass-market car.
